HP Color LaserJet 3550N Printer is the best money can buy!, October 27, 2004
This review is from: HP Color LaserJet 3550N Printer (Office Product)
I looked at all of the laser printers and inkjet. Every article says there is nothing like an inkjet. I can tell you for a fact that they are wrong!! There is no comparison at all when printed on plain paper; this HP LaserJet 3550 is the best!! When printed on gloss paper a great inkjet is better but not by much at all. Meaning you will not need an inkjet unless you already have one. I read all the articles on all brands (OKI, Samsung, HP, Lexmark, Brother, Ricoh, Minolta, Panasonic, etc...) (trust me I spent 2+ weeks reading) of laser printers. I sent (and paid) for samples only to find out that the HP LaserJet printers (3500, 3550, 3700) produce the best output (B&W, color, and photo) and they only have 600*600 res., which goes to show you resolution means nothing (at least with HP)!!
This HP 3550 printer is fast and produced the best photos I have seen on any laser printer (no banding also!). Power consumption is low, it is Quiet for a laser, and of course it is bigger than an inkjet or a cheap (slow) color laser (that is why it is FAST) (they do sell cheaper, smaller, slower models). Trust me it is not that big in size (at least for what it does). HP does not put in half toner cartridges like others (Minolta, etc...). The only thing it could have is a duplex option, but it does a great job a manual duplex. I just can not say anything bad, I was very hesitant about buying a color laser but am very happy with this and am glad I did not go with any of the other brands (especially after getting in my samples of other printers) you will not regret this purchase!!!!! I have the LaserJet 3550n.

I'm torn... great print quality but everything else is a nightmare!, November 16, 2005
This review is from: HP Color LaserJet 3550N Printer (Office Product)
Truthfully I am torn... this is a great printer at a great value (we just got one for our home office) but you have to be willing to put up with A LOT of hassle to get it.
First off... print quality is FANTASTIC. We do alot of high end graphics and this printer handles them better then any other comparable or even more expensive lasers (except of course commercial presses). Quick, quiet and very slick output.
BUT... it took us over 8 weeks to get ours! And, according to HP's own website, if you order on today it will not even ship for 4 weeks. Yikes! I don't need instant gratification but 4-8 weeks?!?! And that was only after calling the folks in Amazon's CS department everyday for 2 weeks! In truth it was Amazon's fault rather then HP's but still... 8 weeks!.
And... you can forget about anything approaching easy installation if you are putting this on a network. The CD would not autorun... HP's website would not download the file. The installation manual directs all network users to "step 19" but the only thing marked "19" is in Arabic (I *think* it's Arabic but it sure isn't English:) )and the eventual fix is to use HP's Printer Network Wizard which just installs one more process on to my taskbar! On top of it, the installation manual for this was definitely not written by someone whose primary language is English!
As far as support, again it was mixed bag. After being pre-screened by someone in India (twice) who kept asking me for "1 minute of my time" ( I assume she was asking me to "hold on"?) I was transfered no less then 5 times to finally make it to the correct tech department. Apparently there is a "special" department for the 3550n that is not in the normal laser jet section. But, after getting a tech on the phone they were great. After all was said and done It took over 3 hours to configure 2 computers to use this printer and over an hour was spent on the phone with HP.
So... the upshot? If you have more time then money this is an EXCELLENT printer. But if you're time is precious you might want to look at another printer (or dare I suggest another manufacturer?).

beautiful color output, even on regular paper, October 10, 2005
This review is from: HP Color LaserJet 3550N Printer (Office Product)
our Lexmark B&W laser printer broke for the last time after many many years of loyal service. The reviews seemed to point to Dell and HP for the best sub $1000 color laser printers. I decided Dell was too new in the game and went with HP. I couldn't be happier. The color pages I've printed so far, including photos, presentations and webpages are amazingly crisp, even on stock paper, not photo paper. The unit IS large, and most of this is the printer inards itself, an extra paper tray will cost you ~$250 more, stock the printer can not even hold a ream. Although I have nothing to compare it to, the output comes quickly, with minor warm up team needed. So far our office is very happy with this printer.
