This review is from: HP Pavilion DV2740SE 14.1-inch Entertainment Laptop (AMD Turion 64 X 2 Dual Core TL-62 Processor, 3 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) (Personal Computers)
No one's reviewed this yet, which made it very difficult to come around and buy it. Hopefully, I'll make it easier for someone else.
This computer is great. I love the design and its ability to receive a signal from a wireless g router is amazing. No one can ever get the signal from my router on the other side of the house in my room. The signal is frequently weak on my Sony PS3, but for some reason, this laptop gets 4/5 bars all the time. The computer is fast and runs smoothly. It does come with some stuff you don't need that slows it down (bloatware), but you can easily remove it. Windows VISTA does get a little annoying with the security - it constantly asks my persmission for everything!!! I'm sure you can disable this, I just haven't looked around enough yet. I was concerned about having it shipped from Amazon, but it turned out to be excellent. I chose free shipping and the computer arrived two days from when I ordered it. I ordered it Tuesday afternoon and it arrived in perfect condition on Thursday via UPS. The screen is sharp and vibrant. The camera works very well and the battery lasts about as long as anything else you'll get out there. The design is excellent and it's just as good as anything else you could get at a more expensive price. If you have any more questions, please ask.

Sweet computer,

I bought this thing about 6 months ago, it is currently away at "Geek city" because I dropped it and now its broken. So word of advice, dont do that. I would not fault the computer though since for the price and the fact that you knowingly are not buying a "tough book" its understand able.
Seriously though the machine runs perfectly, never over heats no matter how long I leave it sitting on my bed and is very light. The bad on this is Windows Vista which like the previous guy it annoys me with asking me permission to do anything. I have searched and searched and not found where to disable this. I guess you cant fault HP for that, or the machine its self so thats a moot point. The camera is great, very awesome quality. The built in microphone is fun to play with, I use it to record me playing guitar so I can practice soloing over the chord progression and the play back is actually pretty good. Oh and having a second head phone jack is pretty sweet. The computer handles all my programs well and rarely does it need rebooting (its still Windows so that will never go away). Over all this is a great laptop for travel and is generally reliable but I would back my stuff up incase you drop it like I did.

Great Computer,
This review is from: HP Pavilion DV2710US 14.1-inch Entertainment Laptop (AMD Turion 64 X 2 Dual Core TL-60 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) (Personal Computers)
This computer is very good value, it does come with some bloatware but so did my D*ll. Unlike my other machine it does handle Win Vista quite well.
My only cons for this system are: 1) The graphics card only gets a 3.0 in Win performance rating while my other system gets 3.1 on the Intel standard stuff. 2) The D-sub connection does not have the retaining screws so it fits quite loose. 3) The speakers sound great but they are not loud, not something you expect on an entertainment system. I have used this system to play DVDs and it is excellent. The wireless works perfectly and has good range, the battery life compares to all other systems in this class, wish it had a time meter however. I have not tried the light scribe but the burner is excellent. For me the best things about this system are it is light and the screen is beautiful. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a great system at good value with high portability you just can't go wrong. With Amazon free shipping it was just 2 days away.

My laptop has had numerous problems and I have wasted hours with useless tech support.
First, it was unable to burn the recovery disk. Of course it can't just come with one. Tech support answered my request for a recovery disk only 1 month after I made it. Then the SPDIF port doesn't work. 4 hours with tech support, they had me install some 3rd party trial DVD software since according them HP tech support, "the HP software isn't very good." Finally we all gave up. Great entertainment PC with no digital audio. It had always crashed with blue screens. The time it would run keep decreasing until it would only run 1 to 15 minutes without crashing. Tech support had me use the recovery disk, which wiped out the hard drive and failed to install anything. So 2 weeks later I got another recovery disk, with the same result. Another couple of weeks and I got a new hard disk (that was put together with misaligned stripped screws.) Over the course of 2 months I got it "serviced", where it was returned without even reinstalling the OS. Now that I've reinstalled the OS, it crashes constantly with blue screens. I've been dealing with the HP "quality" managers for another month, and there going to send me a box to return it. Over a month to send me box? I'm assigned a manager who is always busy or unavailable. It seems their intention is to drag this out until the warranty expires. I will certainly never purchase an HP product again.

Wonderful!,

My husband (who gives me wonderful presents - see my review for the 42" Sharp Aquos) bought me this for Christmas so we could both compute in bed, and we do. First thing I did was install Avast & Ad-Aware (not free any longer) and deleted Norton since it's such a memory hog.
So far so good. Getting used to VISTA and being asked every two seconds if it can download something. There are also programs that need to give permission to start that I haven't figured out to do. I'm taking it to work on Friday so maybe the tech guy there knows. It took a little while to figure out where downloads were stored since some of the file paths are different from XP. The wireless is driving me crazy. Sometimes it turns right on, other times I have to reboot and not even then it's not 100% reliable. I don't know what to do. It goes from the connection to the router obviously, and it recognizes the router, but not the connection. (I have to make sure the router's plugged in as well.) Other small quibbles: 1. the power cord plugs in on the right hand side, which interferes with using that side to use the mouse and since I'm on the left side of the bed, it wraps around the computer rather than from behind. 2. the lights don't bother me generally, but the blue light always flashes unless I turn the thing off...and not always then. A little annoying at night unless I put it into its case. 3. what's the difference between "sleep" and "hibernate"? After my wireless mouse broke last year I used the touchpad on the other laptop, I find that just as easy to use as a mouse especially with this little gem. No problems with Office 07 but I haven't used it much on this computer. This is very easy to travel with, moreso than my 17" laptop and the screen is crisp so viewing isn't hampered. Beautiful high, gloss finish. Some fingerprints, though. It does come with a lot of software that you can keep and pay for (Vongo, SlingPlayer, muvee, LizardTech, Rhapsody, etc.) or delete.

this is a great machine with some annoying flaws
-quickplay lights are too sensitive and are always on - you cannot turn them off, i am prone to slighty grazing them by accident at least 5 times a day and sometimes they just activate on their own. VERY annoying! -sometimes the trackpad doesn't work -i have noticed that it is very slow using Office 2007 otherwise it has a nice screen, not too heavy, and has an OK battery life

I have had this computer for almost a year now.. 10 months as a matter of fact and it has NOT failed me once! Its still as fast as when I bought it. The 3GB memory, 250 hard drive 2.10 Ghz processor... its just awesome and so light weight. Ive had a few other laptops in my life but this one here tops ALL other laptops.

A Review After 6 Months of Ownership,

This review is from: HP Pavilion DV2710US 14.1-inch Entertainment Laptop (AMD Turion 64 X 2 Dual Core TL-60 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) (Personal Computers)
I bought this laptop in February 2008 after my previous HP Pavilion (1040US) finally bit the dust. I am an extremely heavy computer user and on many days, can spend between 12 to 16 hours working on my computer.
There were several reasons I bought this computer after owning another HP. When my previous computer died, I was in the middle of a project that had to be completed within a few days, and did not have the luxury of ordering and waiting for a computer online. I was attracted to the HP DV2718 because of its looks, its price and its impressive specs. I have no real complaints about its performance, and although it is somewhat laggy, I put more of that blame on Vista than on the machine itself. However, there are some negatives. The wireless switch is POORLY located. If one uses this laptop as intended (on a lap), it is extremely easy to accidentally toggle the wireless switch. It is located on the front edge of the machine, and does not click into place, so the slightest brush is sufficient to move it. The machine gets extremely hot under heavy usage. Unless placed on a hard surface such as a table, tray or book, the area around the fan gets HOT. It is not just warm, it is actually hot enough to be practically untouchable. This is symptomatic of the AMD chips, and although I am a fan of AMD, it is just unsuitable for this computer. The power cord sticks straight out of the side of the machine. Because of this, bumps and contact against the side of machine has caused the AC port to feel wobbly over time. Furthermore, the powercord would have held up better had it been formed at a right angle to the machine - preventing fraying over time. If this was positioned on the back of the machine like previous generations of HP Pavilions, it would be much less of an issue. When I pick this computer up, I usually lift it with my left hand, with my thumb on the area next to the touch pad, and the other four fingers at the bottom. Well, over time the plastic cover over the hard drive has developed a crack. Precisely, the crack has formed where the air slots joins the more solid part of the cover. A more minor complaint I have is that there is no hardware switch for the built in webcam and microphone. On some chat clients, if your chat partner turns on video, it will automatically turn yours on too, which may lead to some embarrassing moments if not properly prepared. Although the blue lights are a very pleasing color, there is a colored ring around the port into which the AC connector plugs in. This light stays on for as long as the machine is plugged in, which means that if you use this computer in bed, charging it through the night is annoying because of the distractingly bright light. I hope this review is helpful. I greatly enjoyed my previous HP Pavilion, but I believe that less thought went into the design of this machine, than into its previous incarnations. Yes, it is a good looking machine, but in this case, function does not follow form.

Too Many Flaws For The Price,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I only use a computer to surf the net and correspond via e-mail. The bells and whistles on most systems are meaningless to me. Nonetheless, I was persuaded to get a higher end computer with lots of memory and Hard Disc space on the premise that it would run faster and smoother. This one doesn't. Indeed, my 1 GB machines run faster. This one is very fast at startup, but that is it. In addition, if I allow the machine to go into sleep mode, the screen will stay dark. I must do a complete shut down, then re-boot. The touchpad is horrible - overly sensitive one minute then non responsive the next. The keypad, after three months use, has started to get very hard to use. In addition, occasionally the screen will suddenly go dark and the HP Media Center starts up by itself(and my fingers are nowhere near the touch sensors). Again, I am not a computer expert, but for my simple purposes this machine is a major disappointment.

A lot of folks have run into problems with HP customer support. Problem is that this is outsourced (shame on you HP). In February customer support had us ship my wife's HP back for repairs. After numerous calls and no update to the website, we were about ready to give up. A local radio hotline show recommended sending a snail mail to higher ups, so we sent letters, polite but firm, with all the details, to the HP CEO and VP of consumer product services. Less than a week later we were contacted by a customer quality control supervisor. My wife now has a new computer. Hopefully this one doesn't belly up on us.
