5.0 out of 5 stars It just works
I was a long time Epson user, but I got really annoyed with the way Epson printers stall to clear the print heads (which clog frequently). HP doesn't seem to have that problem; perhaps because the printhead gets changed every time you replace the ink cartridge.

I use the printer with both Mac OS X and Windows (I run both on my MacBook Pro). No installation...

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Printer, HORRID Software
I just bought the DP4260 to replace an older HP printer that had died. The printer is pretty good, reasonably fast, and print quality is good. I haven't had it long enough to know how fast it runs through ink cartridges.

However, the software that comes with it is HORRID. It is bordering on taking over your computer to turn it into an HP monster...

No installation issues on either platform. It's quick, the output looks great, it handles envelopes just fine, and the price is right. Happy camper.

By the way, if you're office is cramped (like mine) don't let the depth dimension scare you - you can fold the paper tray up out of the way when it's not printing, and it takes up about 8".

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice little printer, January 3, 2008
This review is from: HP Deskjet D4260 Printer (CB641A#B1H) (Office Product)
I bought this to use on my desk in the office to print out emails and attachments and miscellaneous documents. It does not take up a lot of space, prints fast with good quality, and is reasonably quiet. It is perfect for my purposes.

I changed the settings to print only in black and white since I don't need color. The menus are easy to use.

Like all printers, this does not come with a USB cable to connect with your computer, and the ink cartridges that come with it are the "economy size" that don't last very long. However once I replaced the black cartridge with a standard size, the ink supply seems to be holding up pretty well based on the amount of printing that I do.

Had for 2-3 weeks, no problems. Quiet, effective. Ink usage much more efficient than the 4100 series that this replaces. Software's fairly user-friendly. Only complaint is that it didn't specifically say in the description (or maybe it was there but hidden) that there was no usb cord. The fact that it didn't come with a cord isn't a problem, but it would've been nice to know about that beforehand. Otherwise, no complaints, excellent product, always been a fan of hp printers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Printer, HORRID Software, December 17, 2007

I just bought the DP4260 to replace an older HP printer that had died. The printer is pretty good, reasonably fast, and print quality is good. I haven't had it long enough to know how fast it runs through ink cartridges.

However, the software that comes with it is HORRID. It is bordering on taking over your computer to turn it into an HP monster. Periodically at random times it brings up ads. Whenever I print it works fine, then some time later after I am no longer connected to the printer and have moved to a different room and different task it decides that something is wrong with the printer, and it tries to remind me every few seconds to fix it (how it could possibly know that something is wrong when it is not even connected to the printer I don't know). I have not found any way to turn off the repeated warnings (the most obvious stuff doesn't work), nor to get any other work done, other than restarting the computer.

The printer seems pretty good. However, I will not buy another HP printer and will consider throwing away this one unless they fix their software. I will try (when I get energetic) to uninstall the software that comes with this printer and try to do a custom install of only the software that is actually needed for printing.

In my opinion, you should not buy this printer unless you know enough about software to load something other than the default software install that comes with the printer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent all-around printer, November 23, 2007

I did a lot of research before buying this printer.Consumer Report recommended it, but didn't think the black text printing was sharp enough. It seems fine to me. I wanted to be able to print good color graphics such as greeting cards, and also acceptable photos. It does both very well, and the cartridges are reasonably priced. I am very happy with my purchase.

2.0 out of 5 stars Software problems - can't adjust any settings, December 17, 2007

My Canon IP4300 DIED suddenly in the middle of printing yesterday. I read now on Amazon that others have had trouble with the ink cartridges refusing to register and work after a simple routine refill. I was not happy with Canon at all so I decided to try HP. We have HP printers at work which i don't like - software and performance are unreliable. But, the HP4260 was in stock at Staples and the quality looked phenomonal on the test prints.

I returned this printer within the hour. The installation appeared to go well - routine actually. But, when I tried the printer with two different common software programs, changing any setting would simply not work. Only the default settings worked. There were other hiccups too and the instructions are awful, compared to Canon at least.

For $30 more, I got the Canon MP470 which also copies and scans. Granted, I don't think the quality is any better at all than HP4260 - it's probably a little worse actually. But, every Canon product I've ever owned - 2 cameras that still work great and two printers - one of which still works great - all installed flawlessly and worked with all programs right out of the box. The instructions are clear, illustrated and concise step by step. The MP470 ink cartridges are different than Canon IP4300 so hopefully, I won't be getting a new printer in a year.

In any case, I still give the HP4260 2 stars simply because the quality and speed are great for a mere $64. However, it's all useless and moot if the HP4260 doesn't work with any of my common programs. Darn. I really wanted this to work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good all around printer, December 23, 2007

I received this printer 3 weeks ago and I have been very pleased with it.

I have used it to print word documents, greeting cards, envelopes, and Avery name badge labels. The print quality is good, several of my friends who received the greeting cards printed on 7 X 10 ¼ card stock have commented on the print quality. I have not had any problems printing on different size and weight paper. The document feeder has always feed one piece of paper at a time and I have not experienced any jamming. The only drawback is that the paper tray does not hold very much paper.

I would recommend this printer to anyone who is looking for a good all around printer for home or to take to college.

Sharing a printer with 5 other people at work was not ideal so I bought this printer for myself. My coworkers are jealous and can't believe how cheap it cost me. I love the look and doesn't take up a lot of space. It's (only) been 4 weeks and it's working great - crisp and clean printing. Unfortunately, I already need to replace the black ink cartridge - it doesn't seem to waste ink during printings so I hope this short life span of cartridges doesn't continue.

Another good HP printer. This one works ok with Vista home premium.

I don't load the HP disk that comes with it. Hp loads too much junk that drives you nuts with updates and pop ups.. This trash is very hard to get rid of when installed. Plus on some vista rated printers the HP install crashes and you have a mess on your hands... HP installer has Vista problems.

I use the Vista hardware installer and insert the HP disk when the install wizard calls for it. Vista finds the drivers on the disk and installs printer and is good to go...

Printer is very fast and has worked well for a unit in this price range. The only caveat is what others have mentioned, and that is all the junk that is put on the computer when you install the driver as well as a variety of unnecessary pop up messages that come up in connection with its use. I plan to use it with another computer, and will try to install the drivers on a download from HP and hopefully avoid the peripheral nonsense.
