Fast, quiet, high-quality little printer,
By
This review is from: HP Deskjet 5440 Photo Printer (C9045A#B1H) (Office Product)
I've been using this for about a month now for my small business. The quality and speed are wonderful. It's quiet and prints black like a laser printer. The quality is THAT good. The color is on par with the best Epson photo printers and excels when using high-end, glossy super-bright HP paper. The photo quality with the optional photo inks is amazing. Even with the standard inks the photo print quality is superb. Installation is super easy and can be completed by even a novice with HP's "Quick Start" sheet included with the printer. XP loved it and recognized with no problem.
My only complaint is the paper tray only holds 100 sheets and the paper path is curved so is not ideal for some adhesive-backed labels and form types and for thicker stock. Some grabbing has happened. But overall it is an excellent printer fully at home with everything from full-color graphics (I do graphics design) to more mundane black text-based forms, letters and invoices. I love it. Small and low profile too. I HATE the stupid sticker that HP puts on the lid that DOES NOT come off with anything that won't damage the glossy plastic finish. Don't advertise to me on something I already bought and PLEASE make that sticker removable. It's really ugly. Other than that it's great.

I'm a college student and decided to get my own printer for my room because I was tired of going to the living room computer to print out my schoolwork. So far, the 5440 has been good to me, but I have one problem: The black ink smudges when I print on soft gloss or high gloss photo paper. Am I supposed to use HP Photo papers? I didn't have this problem with my old Hp deskjet printer. I waited for the next day and it still smudged. that's my only complaint. UPDATE: it smudges on kodak soft gloss paper.

I just got this printer and I'm impressed. The quality and speed are very good. When I use Fast Draft mode, it prints like my old printer (an Epson Stylus Color 880) did in normal mode. There's no lines and I really recommend this printer, especially if you are a student looking for a cheap alternative to paying for printing in your university computer lab (10 cents a page at my university).

After realizing that the ink for my old HP was getting to expensive, I bought the HP 5440 and I love it! Its small design allows it to fit anywhere, it prints fast and the color phots are awesome! For the price this printer was a great buy! Highly Recommended!

I needed to replace my old Epson Stylus 777 printer and wanted just a basic printer to use to print out documents. The HP 5440 is great at what it does and I would recommend it to anyone.

Highest cost per page printer on market,

This printer forces you to use only the HP92 and HP93 5ml cartridges, even though HP makes the same physical cartridges in larger yield models (HP94, HP95, HP96, HP97, and HP98). The printer only accepts the lowest yield cartridges.
Figure this: If you had an older HP printer that used the standard HP45A cartridge.... that cartridge held 42ml of black ink and costs $30. This model uses the HP92A which holds 5ml of black ink for $20. So if you buy 8 of the HP92 cartridges ($160 worth) you still don't have as much ink as the $30 HP42A cartridge. This works out to an extremely high cost per page. It also only uses a 5ml color cartridge. You can buy a canon printer for the same price that uses 3 individual cartridges per color that hold 13ml each (39ml total color), which equals out to a much lower cost per page.

Excellent Printer,

I recently got this printer and am amazed at its speed and its quality. The only thing it doesn't print well is a certain label sheet that we have. But how often does one print labels? Anyway this this is great and it is perfect for students. The software that it comes with is also pretty handy though I haven't used it too much. I recommend this printer very highly!

2 YEAR DISPOSABLE PRINTER,
This review is from: HP Deskjet 5440 Photo Printer (C9045A#B1H) (Office Product)
THIS PRINTER WILL LAST 2 YEARS AND WORK GREAT DURING THAT TIME. IN THE MONTHS THAT FOLLOW IT WILL CONSTANTLY HAVE PAPER JAMS AND THEN IT WILL JUST QUIT WORKING ALL TOHGETHER. I AM STILL LOOKING FOR A BASIC HOUSEHOLD PRINTER THAT WILL LAST 5 YEARS MINIMUM AND PRINT ONLY IN AFFORDABLE BLACK AND WHITE. I AM DOUBTFUL THAT HP WILL EVER MAKE IT WHEN THEY CAN SELL DISPOSABLE PRINTERS TO MAKE THE COMPANY MORE MONEY.

Lasted for about 2 years until it keeps having paper jam every time I try to print something. I'm looking for another printer now.
Good Points (During the first year of use): Good Picture Quality. Quieter than my previous Canon. Bad Points: Takes up a lot of ink it seems, but the cartridges aren't all that expensive though. Kinda slow if you do normal printing. After a year's use, it starts to get paper jam often. Now, it jams everytime I print.

3 years and still going strong.
I have got this printer early 2006, hocked to a 24/7 computer and shared it on my home wireless network, and couldn't be more pleased. Print Quality: --------------- Its not just an HP printer, its an HP photo printer. with photo ink and proper photo paper, you can certainly get pictures far better than those from your local Walmart ;), but don't expect it to cost it as low as Walmart's though. Bang of buck: -------------- I have done lots of black only printing. Fast Draft was acceptable for me (printing shopping lists and school reports). The 5ml/$20 cartridge would easily yield me 200+ pages. - Not enough for you ? well, here Inkjet Ink Refill Kit Premium BLACK and Color 21oz(595ml) - Univeral ink compatibility, this almost 100x the ink for 1.25x the price. - The HP cartridges that comes with it (92/93) are refillable, no need to drill. The doesn't contain a counter chip, no need for reset procedures, these are made for refilling, too bad printers aren't made like that any more. - You can still print in black if you have empty/dry color cartridge (vice versa), the printer will not lock until you replace the empty cartridge. Convenience: ------------ - Not that noisy, doesn't shake that much, doesn't heat or need no warming up. - Pictbridge front port, so you can print pics directly from you digicam without a PC. Reliability: ------------ Although it depends on the usage patterns. mine is into its 4th year and still going strong. People reporting paper jams after 3 years of usage, I think this should be taken for the printer, not being an office horse (not made to be). Bottom line: ------------ Small form factor, reliable, near studio quality photo printing, refillable with zero trouble. What else can someone ask for ? ... automatic duplexing ;) |
