Top Customer Reviews

Pros:

1) powerful hardware, great screen, Blu-ray, etc.
2) reasonable weight for 17.3 inch desktop replacement system.
3) Windows 7 versus Windows XP.
4) decent sound system, and great picture when playing back Blu-ray discs - good entertainment laptop.
5) not too much bloatware relative to some other HP products.
6) superfast (with Crucial SSD drive - much cheaper to install it yourself after-market) - loads Windows in 15-20 seconds, and most programs almost instantly.
7) attractive appearance and presentation, decent keyboard (backlit).
8) decent job with the improved management of heat, which plagued the Envy 15 series.
9) good enough video card capability for serious gaming

Cons:

1) tricky trackpad - it's supposed to work similar to a Mac trackpad with two finger scrolling etc., but that's not the case. Much improved with non-HP software (why doesn't HP have it?), but still tricky to use.
2) Windows 7 versus Windows XP - lots of eye candy but still a buggy OS
3) less than stellar battery life (even with solid-state drive). About 1.5 hours on standard 6-cell battery under minimal load.
4) 7.5 pounds - not the most portable laptop.
5) HP's legendary bad service (fortunately haven't needed them yet)
6) difficulties cloning Windows 7 system partitions
7) poor reliability of HP blu-ray software - frequent lock ups

This is a substantially revised review, after three months with the machine.

Verified Purchase
Pros:
1) power
2) price
3) weight (for a 17" model - perfect)
4) exterior

Cons:
1) Weird keyboard layout. Arrow buttons are too small, "home" and "end" are placed very unusual... You will HAVE to relearn your habbits. Envy-15 keyboard is actually better. Hint: turn on the numlock (programmatically) and use the keypad
2) Heat. After playing an hour of my favorite 3d-shooter my left hand aches.
3) Display sucks compared to my old VAIO and to Macbook Pro. Black is not that deep, angles are poor, brightness/contrast suck.

Worse laptop I've ever owned. The touch pad doesn't track properly half the time (causing the stupid Window's Pane to slide over all the time) and the processing power is nothing to write home about. Oh... and the resolution is limited to 1920X1080 so if you have a larger monitor or a projector you want to hook up too, forget it. At worse, it just won[t work and at best, your icons get rearranged every time you plug into another devise. Oh, and has anyone had a problem with the screen just up and cracking on it's own (from the mic hole at the top of the screen - down across the screen). Buyer Beware: Because the Envy has a touch screen, it costs almost as much to repair the screen as it would to buy a new (different model) laptop! I gave this one to my kids to thrash.
