I got this when I had no idea what to expect or how does it work or even if it were to work without the specialized equipment that usually go with it.
I was happily shocked to see that it was a true "plug and play" thing on Windows XP and later versions. No installation or special drivers were needed or required. You plug it into your USB port and it starts working. Aim it at any bar code and it will read and translate from bar code to text into your application, text editor word processor or what have you. The rest is up to you as to how you will use it or what applications to buy to use with it.

I received the HP EY022AT barcode scanner last night and it worked like a charm. I used it with several different barcodes with no problem. There are no drivers to install nor any prompts. The only adjustment I needed to make was to have the barcode firmware execute an [Enter] command automatically after scanning the code. This is not the default behavior coming out of the box, however, the PDF file has a page you can print and with instructions for a scan sequence that will modify the firmware. On the same page, there is another scan that will reset the device to the factory default settings.
I have tried the scanner on three different computers, using both Windows XP and Windows 7 and the device works like a charm.

This reader is very simple to integrate - just plug it in to USB. There is nothing that must be loaded. Scans appear as keystrokes to the system.
Out of the box, the reader handles all supported symbologies. YOu can scan a special bar code command card to turn on/off features. For example, you can turn off symbologies (bar code types) which will not be using. This further improves the accuracy of the reader. You can select communications types, etc. And, no matter how much you might screw it up, there is a magic recovery label that resets the device. In the simply mode, the operator may screw up by scanning when the input cursor is on the wrong field. For example, if you are on the NAME portion of an input form and scan a UPC - you get a UPC number in the name field. If your software understands the industry standard protocols for Point of Sale (POS) systems, you can configure the reader to support that protocol. Then, scanning will automatically go to the correct field. We are developing custom software using this feature. It is actually pretty simple. The scanner engine is made by Symbol Technologies, now part of Motorola, so the only difference between this scanner and the Motorola is the packaging. The price point is amazingly low. |
