5.0 out of 5 stars What a deal!
I was hesitant to purchase this printer as it doesn't cost all that much and is an HP printer. HP always meant more [money] but great quality to me. Well, this printer is a bargain. As long as it meets your needs (no manual paper feed, USB interface only, less feature rich) it is a great value. I'd had no problems with it, and it works great.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not enough memory
Don't choose this printer if you are going to be printing documents with a lot of pictures or graphics (choose HP1200) it just does not have enough memory to handle it and it would start giving you unfinished jobs, they even tell you on HP web site as a troubleshooting problem. It is just words go ahead is a good machine quality/speed/easy to install.

As long as it meets your needs (no manual paper feed, USB interface only, less feature rich) it is a great value. I'd had no problems with it, and it works great.

There are a few points to accept before considering this purchase. First, the lack of a manual paper feed means that to feed envelopes or special paper you have to mess with the primary feed. E.g., to feed envelopes you empty the paper bin, adjust to envelope size, feed the envelope, readjust to the paper feed sizing, and reinsert paper. No simple process.

Second, the paper feeding mechanism is less than industrial. While I have had no problems at all, I sense that it would not stand up to heavy use. E.g., it fine for a SOHO but not for something larger. Consider an HP Laserjet 1200 if that's your environment.

We use it at home attached to a Windows ME laptop, and we have 3 other PCs (running Windows 98, 95, and XP) that all print to it successfully over our home network. Printer output quality is great. I highly recommend this printer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific inkjet replacement -- but shows its cheapness, July 12, 2002

This is an amazing laser printer for the price. However, let me emphasize "for the price". What are you missing out on?

It only has 1mb of RAM. Printing complex documents, especially over a network, can be somewhat sluggish.

It doesn't support PostScript or even HP's own PCL. Instead, PCL support is implemented in software, the "driver" that is supplied. Basically, the printer is doing little by itself, and has to be spoon-fed by your system. This is an acceptable thing in the world of inkjets, so you could consider it acceptable for this class of printer. Still, a laser printer should be expected to provide hardware PCL or PostScript support.

The biggest problem with their software-only PCL solution is the fact that you're tied to Windows or MacOS. HP does not provide their driver for any other operating system, so if you want to use anything else (such as linux), you're out of luck.

Still, it has many high points. Text is wonderfully rendered, and images come out acceptably well. It truly is fast, especially from a cold start (first page hardly takes longer than the rest!). Self-cleaning works great, and it is very economic with toner usage.

If you do demand PCL support, then Brother and a few other companies have "real" lasers of similar quality with similar price ranges. If not, the LJ 1000 has plenty of other redeeming qualities, and you shouldn't overlook it.

Around three months ago, we were looking for a printer to replace our old HP Deskjet 500. By accident, Istumbled upon this low price but quite efficient laser printer. For the money, it can't be beat. My wife has been working out of our house, and she has printed a TON of balance sheets, income statements, etc., and we're still not through a cartridge. Set up was a snap (it's attached to an XP machine networked through our home network to a Win98 machine). The only quirky thing is that there is no off switch. I guess you just have to turn it off via power strip. Otherwise, it has been well worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get the job done fast and easy...., April 26, 2003

I owned another HP printer before this one, a DeskJet. For its time it was top-of-the-line. But it was a complete piece of junk. It was loud and shook alot and made big cracking noises. I was glad to be ridding myself of that old, over-priced thing, but wasn't too fast to buy another HP. In fact, as I shopped around, I avoided HP's, as I assumed I'd find something better from another company. I was wrong.

I set out to find a printer that just printed things. I didn't need to print posters--or billboards for that matter--I just wanted to print essays and what not, fast, quietly and inexpensively. The HP LaserJet1000 fulfilled all of these requirements for a fantastic price. No, it doesn't print in color. But I never used color anyway! If you need a very good printer to do all your standard, basic printing, here's the printer for you!

2.0 out of 5 stars Beware, September 11, 2002
This review is from: HP LaserJet 1000 Printer (Office Product)
This is a USB printer, and USB printers have *issues.* If all you print is text, all is well. However, if you print any kind of graphics, a USB printer requires that you change all PostScript from binary to ASCII and where you make that change is different from program to program. If you miss a binary file, the printer spits out page after page each with one line of gibberish. So, bottom line: If you are printing letters, great printer. If you print PostScript you will tear your hair out.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous junk, March 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: HP LaserJet 1000 Printer (Office Product)
It is bad enough that any printer manufacturer would offer a laser printer these days with a measly 1 MB of standard memory but it is [bad] that they would make 1 MB the maximum amount of memory that printer can accomodate. If you ever want to print anything other than text (such as .pdf files, graphics intensive web sites, digital photos) stay away from this unit. I would strongly reccomend the Brother HL-1440. It comes with 2 MB standard and is upgradable to 34 MB using a standard SIMM. It also has many other other advantages over the HP at a lower price. If you really have your heart set on HP but don't want to spend a lot, you'd be A LOT better off to buy a higher line model used or refurbished. HP seems to be using its reputation for high quality office grade machines to fool home users into buying complete junk.

I got this printer and set it up in less than 6 mins even with a four year old helping! It's fast, it's crisp, it's clear and it even does a nice job with images! I had no idea what to expect from a low priced laser printer but this is a clear a quality as my first HP LaserJet I bought for over ($) 10 years ago!
I highly recommend this over inkjets and middle of the road lasers. At this price you can get this printer and a photo printer and you're set to do anything!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Printer Value, February 8, 2002

The HP LaserJet 1000 is simply the best buy in printers available today. I purchased one to replace my existing inkjet printer, which ate ink at an incredible rate, and since October, I have had no problems whatsoever.

The resolution is rock-solid, the print quality is high, it prints at a very fast rate, and most importantly, it has gone well over 1300 pages on a single cartridge, making it a huge cost savings! (compared to an inkjet)

Bottom line? You can't beat this printer. HP reliability, fast printing, high quality. Best bang for the buck.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Complete Mistake; Don't Buy if you use Windows 98, August 13, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: HP LaserJet 1000 Printer (Office Product)
After I bought this printer, it turned into a fiasco. I had my old HP LaserJet 4L for 6 years. It got me through four years of college and 2 1/2 years of law school. I never had any problems. It eventually died simply because I used it so much; I ran it into the ground.

This printer was just the opposite, however. Right from the start, there were problems. Just a few days after I had it, I began getting errors messages saying that the printer was not connected (even though it was). I called HP's tech support and was told that there was some sort of glitch in the programming code if the printer was used with Windows 98. They sent me a patch, which seemed to fix the problem.

A couple of months later, however, I began to have the same problem. Again, I called tech support. After 2 hours on the phone trying several different methods of fixing the problem, HP's tech support concluded that the printer simply would not work with my laptop because I had Windows 98. Apparently there is some sort of glitch with the printer's USB connection on machines that use Windows 98 and while usually it can be corrected, sometimes it cannot.

There are several problems with this printer. First, why use a USB connection when parallels have always worked so well in the past? If nothing else, making the printer compatible either way so the user can decide. Second, why sell a printer that might not be compatible with Windows 98? At least give a warning to Windows 98 users not to purchase this printer. In fairness to HP, they were pretty good about refunding my money but still, it was a major hassle having to go through all this and at the end of the day, I am still without a printer. Overall, I highly recommend NOT buying this printer; HP all but conceded to me that there were problems with it, particularly if you use Windows 98.
