5.0 out of 5 stars I love this device...
I have had my HP v40 for about 6 months now, and I have really enjoyed it. Not only does this device print, but it also copies, scans and faxes.

First the printing quality is excellent for black and white, but also quite good with color. I think that the black and white speed is very good. I am a computer programmer, and author so I frequently print code and chapters...

3.0 out of 5 stars not windows xp ready!
I received this gift for Christmas and have enjoyed it ...However, please keep in mind that the drivers and software are NOT windows XP compatible. You can still utilize the front panel of the v40 to operate it but the full HP software is not available yet. If you are expecting ease of use when connected to your xp based PC ...well...it is not happening!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this device..., November 18, 2001

I have had my HP v40 for about 6 months now, and I have really enjoyed it. Not only does this device print, but it also copies, scans and faxes.

First the printing quality is excellent for black and white, but also quite good with color. I think that the black and white speed is very good. I am a computer programmer, and author so I frequently print code and chapters when working or writing. Printing large chapters in Draft quality is twice as fast as my previous printer, the HP 722C, which I also thought was fast. I have attempted to print photos, with mixed results.

Although I am not 100 percent sold on the scanning feature, I have used it before and it works pretty good. I still rely on my HP ScanJet for professional quality scans.

Copying is pretty good on this device. You can modify the copy quality right on the device's control panel as you are making copies. I think that the Fine quality images/documents turn out looking really good, while the Normal quality leaves a little to be desired.

The fax machine built into this device is really what sold me. I frequently need to fax dozens of pages at a time to various locations, and the feeder tray has never failed me; with this fax machine I have never had to resend a page yet - knock on wood. You are also supposed to be able to store numbers in the fax machine's memory, but I have yet to figure that out.

In all, this is one of the best multipurpose devices I have ever purchased. I am very happy with it, and I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best all-in-one for small businesses on a budget, September 14, 2001
By

If you work from home, or operate a small personal business, then you probably have clearly defined wants and needs in your office equipment. You want a high-quality fax machine that you can trust to send and receive documents without your attention. You want a printer that will produce presentation-quality results without wasting ink. You might want to scan receipts or invoices into your computer, and a low-volume copier would be nice. Most of all, you need this equipment to be well-made, reliable, and easy to use, and you'd like it all to cost as little as possible.

With the OfficeJet V40, you get all of that.

As a consultant, I have recommended this machine to a variety of Mom & Pop shops and executives who like to take paperwork home. I have never heard a complaint nor seen a return. The V40 (both SE and XI - the only difference is in the distribution channels) isn't a speed demon, and it lacks flatbed scanning, but its price and versatility make it an excellent value. Large office? Get two!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Value than the K60, July 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: HP OfficeJet V40SE All-in-One (Office Product)
At...less than the K60, the v40 has the same resolution and features plus it will copy a color print in b/w which the K60 won't. The only drawbacks are that it is about 1 ppm slower than the K60 and it is USB only (the K60 is USB and parallel). Both are great machines but this one is the better deal in my opinion

5.0 out of 5 stars All-in-one Perfect for Home, July 21, 2002
By

This review is from: HP OfficeJet V40SE All-in-One (Office Product)
This All-in-one may be the perfect device for the home, providing excellent print quality, copy speeds that, although aren't blazing, are more than adequate for light-duty copying, an excellent scanner (with HP's own, very good scanner software) and a fax that can send document from the computer, sheet feeder or both.

So far we've been completely impressed by the quality of the machine and the ease-of-use. With its USB interface, hooking it up to our Win XP system was a piece of cake (and, yes, although other reviewers have mentioned problems with XP, it appears HP has resolved those issues and now provides full XP compatibility with the out-of-the-box drivers).

I would highly recommend this machine to anyone who needs all of the all-in-one's capabilities for the home or home office.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, September 9, 2002

This all-n-1 is almost perfect

For anyone looking for a home office fax/printer/copier, this is what u want, it also has the best feature "auto-phone/fax switch", which allow you to have this hooked up to your home phone line without setting up distinctive ring (which costs extra) or its own phone line

the only problem i am having with this is that sometimes it prints extremely slow, i dont know why cuz its not every time, just randomly

for XP users ill say this, ignore all the other reviews, those ppl have no clue what they are doing

install could not be easier, i plugged it in, winxp detected it and its installed, never even went thru the install process

maybe its just me but i am sick of companies not giving you a printer cable. i thought that was finised now that most printers are USB, and USB cabe being alot cheaper than old printer cable, but this V40 is only USB compatible and comes with no cable, very disappointing

4.0 out of 5 stars Best multi-function printer for your money, September 1, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: HP OfficeJet V40SE All-in-One (Office Product)
Unfortunately, HP discontinued this model. However, prints both documents and photos great. Works with XP, but you need to ensure you get the v40xi model. All other models will have compatibility issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this, not the Lemark x63, October 1, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: HP OfficeJet V40SE All-in-One (Office Product)
This is the unit I bought after the extreme difficulty I had with the Lexmark x63 (see my review there). I have an IBM clone, Pentium 4 chip, 512 GB of room and I run Windows XP. There is varing opinions as to wether the Lexmark ran with XP. Apparently it won't. This machine does worry free. What a nice machine. The large fold out picture instruction sheet is very easy to follow. The CDROM install was pain free. The cartridge installation was a snap. It holds alot of paper in the bottom load tray, which keeps them flat, and not sticking up in the air like some rear load units. Colour quality is good. The real nice feature is that this is a stand alone fax, so you don't have to have you computer turned on or mabye even logged onto the Net to use it. It's reasonably quiet, and it sits on rubber feet. I paid [money] more (Canadian) for this unit over the Lexmark, and it was worth every penny. It's perfect for home/home office use. Bonus Arcsoft PhotoImpression and PhotoFantasy software was included so you can make special effect pictures. I didn't bother loading this. Further, it came with a French Language control panel cover for our friends in la belle provance. I'm unsure if the US versions have the cover in Spanish. Just remember that this machine doesn't have a glass bed for the scanner, so if you are constantly scanning things in from books, you may want to pass.

2.0 out of 5 stars Set Up Issues, April 29, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: HP OfficeJet V40SE All-in-One (Office Product)
I was excited to receive my HP v40, but unfortunately spent hours trying to get it set up. I constantly had problems with the "Align Print Cartridge" message on the LCD that would not disappear. Unfortunately, the HP Help Center was closed (at 8pm EST) when I started my setup around 10pm - and I was up past midnight trying to resolve the set up difficulty myself to no avail. As it turned out, after making a couple calls to Technical Support at my expense the next day, it was determined that I had a defective print cartridge. You would think that by now, HP would have enough experience that a set up message would indicate such a problem. But instead, during my setup I received a message that said my computer might not meet the minimum requirements - which turned out to be incorrect and almost caused me to send the unit back.

Anyway, I needed to pick up a color cartridge which took me another hour of time and a cost of [money]. Although I apparently will receive a color replacement cartridge, and the HP v40 now works, this doesn't make up for the inconvenience I went through. And, there are some other issues.

The cartridges seem to be on the expensive side with the black cartridge selling at [money], for a total ink replacement of [money]. The USB caable is not included which is an added cost and may require an extra trip - and this is the only way you can hook up this device. It doesn't take parrallel or serial cables. The modem is 14.4 vs. 33.6 with competitive makes, and the metal holder for sheets used with the auto feeder is unattractive and has some functional issues. Although less important, the printing on the display panel has some inconsistencies that take away from its appearance and there is no built in handset. Although HPs tech support is good, HP skimped on some corners with this unit and their defective cartridge policy needs improvement. Doing it again, I'd probably take a closer look at the new Brother machine.

4.0 out of 5 stars better then I thought, August 10, 2002
This review is from: HP OfficeJet V40SE All-in-One (Office Product)
I thought I couldn't go wrong with this product for only [$$$'s], but it's better then I expected. Since it isn't a flatbed scanner, you have to send single pages through (can't copy a page from a book). Besides that, the color copying and printing looks great, and all the fax functions are working fine.
I have Windows 2000, and my computer crashed (blue screen) half way through set-up. I rebooted, uninstalled / reinstalled the software, and now everything works great.
I still don't see anything on the market at this price that beats it.
