Great Printer Except for Mac 10.4 Driver,
By
This review is from: HP LaserJet 2420 Monochrome Printer (Office Product)
Bought the HP2420 to go with a new Mac G5. Great printer. Worked fine with Mac OS 10.3 where the driver software was provided by HP. Upgraded to the new OS Tiger 10.4.x where, unfortunately, the driver is now provided embedded in the Mac OS. Printer works fine, except that the Mac Safari browser cannot print to the 2420. When one attempts to print the printer generates an 0049 memory exception message. HP documentation says to turn the printer off to clear the memory. HP online says no driver is available for the Mac OS 10.4 since it is embedded in the OS. Catch 22--currently there is no fix available. Neither HP or Apple have responded to my complaints. Foxfire and Internet Explorer print just fine.

Mixed thoughts about this printer,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP LaserJet 2420 Monochrome Printer (Office Product)
The HP 2420 is a decent printer with some nice features but also some worrisome aspects. Let me hit the good points first:
The printer is FAST. I'm replacing an old HP printer (2100M) that claimed it would print 10 pages per minute (PPM). Perhaps my old printer would hit 10 PPM if all I had it print was double-spaced text with no graphics. But for any serious work, the printer was closer to 6 PPM. This new printer literally flies. I've not timed it, but it must be very close to the claimed speed of 35 PPM even when I give it pages with some graphics. The printer is also quiet and I like the power-saving sleep mode. Installing the printer was easy but I suspect it is VERY important not to connect the printer to the computer until the install software tells you to do so. Several years ago I connected an HP printer to my computer before I had installed the software that came with the machine. Boy, was that a mistake! It took about 2 hours working with HP service people on the phone to fix the resulting problems. So, do NOT make this error. Also, if you want to install the post-script drivers, you must use the custom install. The straight install puts only PCL drivers on your computer. The printer (and HP) does have some downsides. First, be aware that there is no cable included with the printer. And, if you want to use a USB cable, make sure that you get the proper cable--one with an A and a B head, such as the Belkin F3U133-06. Second, on the first day when I was printing a downloaded pdf document, I got a very cryptic error message about a problem with the firmware. I was never able to determine what exactly went wrong, but after shutting down and restarting the printer, the file printed OK. So far I have not had a recurrence, but I remain nervous. Third, the printer comes with 32MB of RAM. I'd like to increase the memory but the manual does not give enough details for me to be comfortable ordering anything but the vastly over-priced HP memory. Fourth, at least for me, HP's "Automatic check" to up-date the drivers (on the HP website) is an "Automatic failure." I have never succeeded in using this service. Finally, if humidity causes the paper you are using to be curved after it is printed, you run the risk of creating a mess. The curved paper will stack up and then be thrown to one side or the other off of the printer. Because the machine is so fast, this can happen quickly. I don't want to give the wrong impression about this printer. Yes, I listed a number of drawbacks, but the only one that really seriously worries me is the error message I received. And after 2 weeks, I have seen this message only once. So, I think the 4 star assessment I gave is accurate.
