For new home based insurance agency, did a marathon online research on AOI printers (still have a 7 year old HP 7300 AIO for backup and color). Bought the m425dn 2 weeks ago.

Was initially swayed by some negative reviews (mostly from late 2012 before firmware release), but decided to buy this unit vs. lower cost HP 8600 Plus Inkjet AIO and other highly rated AIO Lasers because:
- did not need or want to mess with color ink cartridges
- duplex scanning
- very fast scanning (and printing)
- recommended up to 3,000 pages per mo. (50k monthly duty cycle)
- widely available non-oem toner cartridges at 25% HP toner cost for VERY LOW costs per page /
- high toner print page capacity (6700 pages with "x" toner)
- gigabit network speed nice
- ePrint / print to cloud / network
- color scanning
- 2nd tray for envelopes / other paper - 50 pages
- Expandable 250 page input tray option

So far VERY happy. Setup was a breeze! Lightning fast scan / print sped esp. for non-pdf files. It's good looking to boot! Named Black beauty. I did buy locally (read pay taxes) so could return / exchange if any problems).

The only cons I can think of is that it is not real quiet and the wattage use is quite high when printing, though I did not spec this against other printers with similar speeds / printing capacity.

If the above factors are important to you, go for it.

Set up was a breeze on Windows 7 PC through Ethernet. Scan to e-mail is a neat feature - the printer actually connects to your SMTP sever and sends you an e-mail with your scan attached. It's slow, but works.

Hp's eprint is awesome - you send an e-mail with attachment to your customizable e-mail address @hpeprint.com and the document prints. Usually starts within 30 seconds. I love this because we have Macs and PC and phones and tablets in the house and can print from any device without set up hassles.

The big limitations is that although the scanner supports 1200 dpi in B&W and 600 dpi in color, you cannot use the ADF or scan to e-mail or scan to network drive. So if you want more than 300 dpi you have to do each page manually on the flatbed.

Also the scanning is slow compared to my dedicated scanner.

Otherwise, prints fast, relatively quiet, intuitive keypad.

This printer gave us some problems initially but they have been resolved with a call to HP. It would get stuck in sleep mode and we would have to restart the printer in order for it do anything. Even the touchscreen on the printer would be unresponsive. We lived with it for awhile but eventually got fed up with it and called HP. We should have called sooner because all we had to do was a factory reset and it was good to go. The way to factory reset this printer is not any where I could find on the internet which is why I am going to post it here.

To do a factory reset, you must find where it says ready on the touchscreen. Then turn the printer off and then hold the spot on the touchscreen where the Ready was and turn the printer back on. Hold that spot on the touchscreen as it starts up until it says something like PERM STORAGE INIT and then release it. The printer will restart a few times and then be reset to factory settings.

I gave the printer 4 stars still because we have 4 of these printers and this is the only one this happened on and the fix was easy. The printer works really well and the scanning and emailing are all very responsive. I recommend it.

I am using this printer over the network with machines running Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10. It works very well (although I have not printed to fax). Printing is fast --- the first page typically takes just a few seconds --- and scanning over the network works on both machines.

My only complaint (the reason I have docked a star) is that it took me a while to figure out installation for 12.04. What ultimately worked was downloading and running the hplip install script from hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/downloads.html. This was necessary even though hplip was already installed. I do appreciate HP's Linux support, but it's disappointing that they are moving in the direction of using closed-source binary blobs. My Office Jet Pro 8600 at home (also an MFP) did not require a driver plug-in and scanning etc works fine.

You can see the level of linux support for all HP's printers at this page: hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/combined.html. Very informative. Thank you HP.

My company purchases two of these for remote offices to replace similar Brother products.

About the only thing that works well is the printer and copier features. The scanning however is extremely slow and part of that reason is the file size of the PDFs this thing generates are HUGE compared to what other devices we have on our network. Even scanning at the lowest DPI setting a one page scan to PDF was multiple Megabytes. (Both scan to folder and scan to email)

Updating to the newest firmware didn't solve the problem at all. HP's solution was to use the HP software for scanning, but we bought these so we can direct scan to folder and to email, not to install extra software on each workstation and train staff how to use.

I replaced the M42dn with a RICOH of similar make and haven't had a problem since.

I didn't see many comments about this issue when I purchased, however I've gone back and really scoured comments on different websites and sure enough a few people have this same problem. I don't know if it's a fluke or what, but I had two bought at different times from different vendors with the exact same problem.
