I received one of these printers several years ago as a gift. Until then, I had been stuck with a horrific dot-matrix printer that not only printed out grainy, faint characters onto irritating paper with tear-off guides, but sounded like a flock of angry seagulls while doing it.

With that as my previous reference, you might expect my review to be a bit biased due to the fact that ANY printer would be better, but I have also used many other printers, ranging from inkjets to photo printers to professional copiers, so I have a good idea of what's out there. This printer is EXCELLENT.

Yes, it only prints black and white, but for documents, reports, essays, schoolwork, graphs, or reference photos that don't need color, this printer is superb. It is reasonably compact and was able to fit nicely on my desk at college along with my computer setup, serving me faithfully through all my classes.

The thing that is most impressive about this printer is how FAST it prints. Obviously, large, professional copy machines can spew out paper much quicker, but they are also huge and costly. I don't know the actual PPM of this machine, but I know that it was faster than any other printer on my dorm floor at school, and makes inkjet printers seem archaic.

Laserjet printers produce much cleaner, crisper text than inkjets can, and this is no exception. Furthermore, the paper comes out dry and ready to be stacked or bound, not damp like some inkjets. Pictures print just as fast as text, and come out with similar clarity. The darkest black is very opaque.

Another issue with any electronic device is reliability, and HP has nailed it. This printer only jams on the rarest of occassions, and its flip-down front makes removing stuck paper easy.

This is the third of this model that I've owned over the years. As a black/white printer, it's a great work horse. Very dependable, does a great job, can always be counted on to finish the task at hand.

Perfect Laser Printer, it's a great work horse. I own 3 HP LaserJet 1100 because of its quality.
But if after 10000pages it starts to jam paper -its Very easy to fix: buy two parts Arm and rubber drum cost ~$10, open printer and replace it, thats all, 10 min job. It will print perfect again NO Jam anymore.
Recomended!

I have this printer since 2000. It is used in a small office and we print about 60/70 pages per day. No problem apart form the occasional jam when printing double-sided documents.

HP, can we please have the same quality in your new printers?

I have had an 1100 from when they first came out, other than a Roller change ($30 kit) which was done 6 years ago this puppy has never stoped. After my company realized that we could not wait any longer for it to die a natural death they took it out of service and bought a HP color Laser. I took the 1100 home rather than see this Tank get dumped and it's been working perfectly at my house for the last 2 years.

They don't make them like this anymore, this printer seems to be immortal, can't say enough good things about it. Mine is not the only one, I have met several other I.T. guys who picked these up for cheap and they also say that they are unbelievably strong and well built.

Update: Still working perfectly as of Nov 2012. I have no idea what can stop this printer from printing. I am now thinking of buying a color laser for myself but I just can't find it in me to dump something that has performed so well.

I had an HP LJ 1100 that was no longer functioning well, so I bought this at a great price. When I received it and set it up, it didn't work right... or so I thought. The problem wasn't the printer, it was the toner. My toner cartridges were old and had been stored where it got hot. Suspecting that was the problem, I got new toner and the printer worked great (as did my old, not-so-defunct one).

The resolution isn't great. I wouldn't recommend printing resumes with it, but we use it for bulk printing (toner is $20 and you get 2,500 or more impressions out of it). It's perfect for home school families and professional writers who like to print drafts cheaply.

Be warned, though, for most new computers you'll need a parallel adapter cord to make it work (if you have Win 7, make sure your adapter is Win 7 compliant. Older ones aren't).

I received the product on-time; however it took over a month to gather the needed accessories to begin using the product (i.e. proper printer cable and toner). I wasn't at all happy about having to research what accessories were needed, where to find them, drivers and instruction manuals and was really tempted to return the product before it was too late, but decided to stick it out.
So now after 2 months and an additional $100 later, I can finally use and leave a review on the printer. The printing seems ok and so far doing the job. There is a delay between each page printed and it is extremely slow at completing a print job. So rush jobs are not possible.

I can't say much about the seller considering they did not do well with advising buyers of all the missing components I explained earlier and they did not remove the 6yr old, dusty toner before shipping so the printer arrived full of toner dust from the inside out. I know the toner is at minimum six yrs old because the company it was purchased from has been out of business that long.

I WOULD NOT recommend the product to anyone with medium to high volume printing, or to anyone on a budget.
