Don't let the previous review scare you. Yes, the battery protrudes, but it provides a convenient support for the keyboard. I always use the "feet" on my keyboard to give me a more favorable typing angle, and that's exactly what the placement of the battery does. As for the battery being "heavy", this is a light-weight (<2.9 lbs) netbook; if you've been lugging around a 5-7 lb laptop, it's a dream. I looked at every netbook on the market, and this one had all the features that pushed my buttons. I am totally sat-is-fied. If I just could have gotten it for the price it's being offered for now, I'd have no regrets.

Battery Issues/Super Heavy!,

This is near perfection. So many positive features.
There is a 6-cell battery that protudes out on a extensive basis. So much so that it BLOCKS your ability to fully open the screen as the battery blocks the screen from fully opening. If you are short, this is not an issue. I'm 6-foot and this netbook only opens so far and then I have to push its 10" tiny screen way out so I can get a clear and bright screen. Thus, I can no longer see the screen. I was so impresed with its GOBI ability to connect anywhere via its internal chip. The keyboard is a solid rated-10! Excellent. The weight with this really inferior and heavy battery makes for a netbook that weighs-in at more than my Sony Vaio standard laptop. I'm so letdown as there are so many positive things about this netbook except for its weight and it's terrible 6-cell large and heavy battery.

I've only had my Mini for one day so far, but have found it to be one slick machine. We bought it to take with us on trips to keep up to date on emails and follow the market, etc. It is going to be perfect for that. For heavy use I will still use my desk top. Battery pack is not a problem. Don't let that keep you from buying one. The Mini does take a while to set up. The directions could be a little more clear and the operating system required extensive updating but that is covered in the instruction booklet and not a big problem...just takes some time.
I could have waited for the 7 to come out, but at this price and since this is the system I have been using for years, why wait. Somebody said it was heavy...I don't think less than 3 lbs should be a problem for most people. After some practice I now no longer reach for the mouse and am getting used to the slightly smaller key board and the mouse pad. It just takes a little practice. Overall the coumpeter is well made, very solid, keyboard has a nice touch, in general a well made machine. Not like some of those I looked at while shopping at the local computer mega-store. So, so far so good. Hope I feel the same after 6 months.

Do not buy the HP Mini netbooks, especially from Amazon,

I bought the HP Mini 110-1050NR 10.1 Netbook and while the product seems to be OK--what I had expected--it failed in one crucial area. Whithin hours after I received the netbook, it would not reboot after it updated the Microsoft software that it came with. It showed a message that the BootMgr is compressed and the computer basically locked up. The user manual that came with the product is essentially useless. No clue about what happened. After hours of frustration, I read in a Consumer's report that there is a serious flow with this product and when you clean the hard disc the computer freezes and you cannot reboot it. Also, I found out that HP has been made aware of this problem for some time and they should have either corrected the problem, or alert the buyers of their product of this flaw, so they would not attempt to EVER clean the hard disc. My frustration turned into anger when--reading the Amazon fine print--I learned that I could not return the netbook to Amazon because it didn't arrive damaged nor "dead-on-arrival". It merely shut down after I turned it on. I wanted to return it but no such luck--Thanks Amazon! Then it was the HP Customer Service ordeal. I call it BTW, Customer Frustration. Spent 3.5 hrs with 4 different agents to conclude that I had to return the product under warranty service to HP and pay a "small shipping fee" for it. I paid $21.54--which for a netbook of $299 is about 7% of the product! It took almost a month before I got the netbook back. Lessons: Don't buy an HP mini and if you do, DON"T buy it from Amazon. Buy from a supplier who accepts returns for flowed products...

Overall, a wonderful product!,
This review is from: HP Mini 110-1050NR 10.1-Inch Netbook (Personal Computers)
This netbook (mine's model 110-1134cl) did exactly what I wanted and expected. The keyboard was a relatively quick fit for me and hardly took any adjustment on my part. Plenty of hard drive space for the computer's intention: web browsing, word processing, music, and even a little video playback during air travel. On a related note, the battery life with my six-cell is stellar.
Why it isn't a five-star product: - Windows 7 Starter. I know it isn't the only option, and it functions quite well for basic computer needs. Customization and networking options are dismal. Prepare to downgrade to XP or load a Linux distro if Starter doesn't meet your needs. - The front power & WiFi switches. They feel a little flimsy and I feel like they need to be handled more delicately than I'd like. - The mousepad. I won't say I hate the left/right buttons literally being on the left and right sides of the trackpad, but I surely don't enjoy it. You get used to it. In my case, I have a hard time adjusting back and forth between my MacBook and the HP. My older model was $240, and for the price, I couldn't have asked for more... except the points above. Solid product.

I love this netbook. It does exactly what it promises. And is great for the purpose intended. It wont replace your desktop or more powerful laptop. It is a perfect compliment to your household network! My teen loves it and I'm going to get 2 more for the rest of us.

I recently purchased a very nice Hewlett Packard Netbook, gently or slightly used, but not noticeably.
I received it for an extremely low price,(comparatively speaking) paid nothing as per shipping & handling (was lucky enough to be able 2 buy it within a time frame that allowed for this) and could not be happier with it! It worked beautifully from day one. It came with adapter & preloaded with anti-virus,XP,wireless or hardwire connection capability & has been my daughter's school (& off hours) companion , scarcely leaving her clutches since arriving. It is one of the finest pc's among our fleet of 5 desktop pc's already with built in camera/speakers etc. I look forward to buying another for my own use! I would rate the seller 100% without compunction. Consider this review of the highest possible among reccomendations.

I wanted to purchase a laptop but wasn't sure what I wanted. I bought this item a month ago because the price was a great deal for a quality and name brand product and the reviews seemed pretty decent. So far, I am extremely happy with everything about this netbook. It is a nice size and I don't mind the battery, which sticks out a bit, but not in a bad way. It actually works well sitting on a desktop, kind of tilts at an angle and is easy for me to type. The keyboard is very comfortable to use (I believe I read it's about 93% of normal keyboard). The one thing I did not get with the product was a user manual, but I was able to download one (.pdf format). The only reason I wanted it was because I wasn't sure what some of the symbols on the keys were (ie: the F keys). At first when I tried to set up to wireless internet, I had issues (it could have been a password issue on my end - I'm not sure...) just happy it works now! I love being able to sit and browse online or to bring it to class to take notes. It does not have a CD drive, so I had to purchase one in order to download MS Office products (Word/Excel/Access). I am able to use them all with no problem. It has three USB ports, so I can use a flash drive to save and transfer documents easily. I also downloaded music cds and can listen to music. I think the battery is supposed to be about 6 hrs (?) but not sure. I used it for a 2 1/2 hour class and it only used about half of battery life. I would recommend this product for someone who wants a nice, affordable, quality netbook that is powerful, portable and fun. So far, I love it and am very happy with my purchase!
**UPDATE DECEMBER 2010: I have had this mini for almost one year and it still works great. I use it at home for Internet and also take it to class to type notes. I can use it for Word, Excel and Email. I have had no major issues with this netbook (it has Windows XP) and just wanted to write an update to let anyone interested know!

Everything is slow, slow, slow. Keyboard is difficult to type on. The Microsoft Office operating system is only a 30-day trial (which Amazon does not tell you anywhere in the product description), then you lose all functionality if you don't upgrade. I spent over an hour on the phone with HP about this issue. To upgrade costs almost as much as I paid for this piece of junk. By the time I found this out, the timeframe in which I could have returned it had already passed.

To those who have purchased this item, what do you have to pay monthly to the service provider for the broadband "go anyway" service (WWAN)? Any drawbacks? Is international use possible?
Many thanks! |
