HP mini flash drives have been known to fail,
By Clint Barton (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: HP Mini 1115NR 8.9-Inch Netbook - 3 Cell Battery (Personal Computers)
I had been looking at the mini laptops with solid state drives for a couple of months and picked up the HP Mini (Netbook) 1115NR a couple of weeks ago. I booted it up, began writing a text file, went online, and then it died. It had been on for about two hours. After some research online I found out that HP rushed this product to market and that the 'black screen of death' is a somewhat common problem. The machine will not boot up at all. The power light goes on, but that is it. Basically the flash drive gets corrupt and cannot be accessed. I returned the laptop and got my money back.

My HP Mini is 5 weeks old and broken;HP Support is not customer friendly,

This review is from: HP Mini 1115NR 8.9-Inch Netbook - 3 Cell Battery (Personal Computers)
I bought the HP Mini about 5 weeks ago. It has had light use since the purchase. Last night I opened it to use it and the "spine" where the screen meets the keyboard had come loose on the end. The computer still worked but I called HP to report the problem and ask for a warranty repair.
I was on the phone for 1 hour 56 minutes. I had to convince the HP customer service rep (who I don't believe had ever seen a netbook) that it was BROKEN...that there was nothing we could do over the phone to fix it. They ended up saying I "must have done something to it". I think it is defective but regardless, the customer service experience on an almost brand new computer was enough to keep me from buying HP products in the future. I wish I'd bought the Acer netbook that my friend recommended.

I bought this computer from amazon and have been using it for a few days now and I have to say I really like it. I love the portability and battery life and am very satisfied with its abilities. It can be slow and lag sometimes but to be expected from and cheap and portable netbook, but I've ordered a 2gb RAM chip(FYI it comes with a 1gbPC2-6400 666MHZ chip, and there is only one SODIMM slot) for $15 for it that should help. The 16 GB hard drive is of course already half filled with windows so I ordered a 8gb sd card for $15 that should help with that. So as long as you have realistic expectations for this netbook, then you will be happy. To be expected, it doesn't do so well at muti tasking or game playing. Overall I'm loving it compared to by older 17in Acer and I would highly suggest it to anyone wanting a easy, simple, and cheap laptop for word processing and internet.

HP Mini Netbook (1116NR),

This review is from: HP Mini 1115NR 8.9-Inch Netbook - 3 Cell Battery (Personal Computers)
What's great about it: Easy set up, Small/Light weight, Great Picture, Nice Keyboard, Good sound.
What's not so great: Finish gets finger prints easy, battery life ok "I bought this after reading positive reviews on Bestbuy and Amazon. I needed something for when I begin teaching for the University of Phoenix online. My wife and kids are always on the desktop so this seems to fit the bill. There are timely items that I will need to post when teaching. I got it a day ago and continued some setting up of the netbook at work. I had it plugged in and ran it for about 4 hours, I was uninstalling some preloaded software and downloading others. The HP Mini ran pretty fast when doing both things at the same time. I have OpenOffice, Avast Virus Scan, Firefox, and IE 8. I still have well over 6 gigs of space on the hard drive. Good value and just what I need for a laptop. For $50 dollars more one could by the ASUS 10" netbook w/160 GB HD but I am not in need of the HD space or few more inches of screen." Would you recommend this product to a friend?: Yes

fits the bill,

This review is from: HP Mini 1115NR 8.9-Inch Netbook - 3 Cell Battery (Personal Computers)
I wanted a lap top that would fit in my purse & allow me to work during the long hours it seemed to take my kids to eat their lunches & play where wi-fi was available. This fits the bill. Even with protective sleeve I bought it still fits nicely in my tote-style purse with room for all my other necessities. That being said, it does tend to "hiccup" when I'm online which can be frustrating. It would also be nice if Microsoft Word was standard instead of the lesser used Works. After a month I am still very satisfied with this purchase even with it's limitations.

Ditch XP and this Netbook Flies!,

First impressions? Nice screen, great keyboard and horrendously slow operating system. Took about 3 minutes to boot and just surfing the internet was a chore as the OS tried to struggle with the low amount of physical memory and relatively slow solid state hard drive.
Then I found that HP had developed their own version of Linux called Mi. So I decided to ditch XP and install HP's Linux. The difference between Linux and Windows XP is like night and day. Linux is quicker to boot, quicker to run and load apps and surfing the net is as fast as it is on my main desktop PC. If you have a netbook, especially one from HP, you owe it to yourself to switch over to Linux. It comes pre-loaded with Firefox, Open Office, games and a whole bunch of other useful applications. It's not hard, this was the first time I used Linux. You can find HP's netbook Linux here at their site. Command Line Interface: Some people have complained that the Command Line Interface (CLI) is missing in this version. It isn't. To enable it, go to Settings, click on the Advanced Tab, then select "Customize Settings" and then finally, scroll down to where you see Root Terminal. Put a check mark in the box and voila, the Root Terminal program icon will now show in the Advanced Tab.

One Major Issue,

I've had this netbook for over 2 months. It's a work computer that does everything I want pretty well. I especially like the keyboard (pretty big), and the mouse has the buttons on the sides of the touchpad. I really like that.
The problem is my battery falls out of the netbook from time to time. The battery locks in place by sliding a little tab into lock position - easy. But for some reason, my tab slides to unlock by itself. (I keep it in my briefcase. Maybe it unlocks while it's in there.) When this happens, the battery will fall right out of the netbook when picked up. It happened to me while downloading a huge file last week. Imagine the frustration. Now, after I lock the battery into place, I secure the tab with duct tape. That fixed it. If not for this issue, I would have given this netbook 5 stars

Very small, very lightweight, inexpensive, comfortable keyboard. If you mostly use the internet on your computer it's great. I like the HP brand, I've had problems with Dell products in the past. I considered internet on a smart phone but the size would be ridiculous. When you pass your 50th birthday it's nice to not have to type with your thumbs.

Great Netbook,

This review is from: HP Mini 1115NR 8.9-Inch Netbook - 3 Cell Battery (Personal Computers)
This little netbook is wonderful, I don't think I could be any happier with it.
The battery life is impressive. It comes loaded with a 1.6ghz processor, and 1gb ram. While probably not powerful enough to run photoshop well, this little netbook is wonderful for mobile internet, mail, chat, etc. It comes with a standard webcam, but the webcam has a tinted film over the surface oif it which makes the image exceptionally dark. I performed "surgery" on it to remove this film, and now it works fine. All in all, I have no complaints about my purchase. Great computer, great price, great value.

So sweet it will rot your teeth!!,
This review is from: HP Mini 1115NR 8.9-Inch Netbook - 3 Cell Battery (Personal Computers)
I was worried about getting this because the space on the hard drive didn't seem to be enough but an SSD drive would come in handy especially if i'm having a clumsy day. I like the appearance, the swirls are so artsy(kinda hypnotises you lol). One of my issues is that when i try to use the (@) button the (") shows up so and i tried the (") button to see if the (@) sign would appear and it did.I think its kinda funny and figure its the fault of the technician that was working on it because i've never heard anyone complain about it[I contacted HP customer care and the rep was on the phone trouble shooting with me for a long time.It appears that this is a one off case he advised me to send it in to be fixed at no charge but i just couldn't bother because school would start soon and i'd be without my new netbook to get assignments done].
I don't like the section that has the big shift button to the right of the netbook. The button appears to be lifting off,i'm thinking that's what HP sacrificed to get the 92% keyboard. The webcam works, the battery is kinda tricky to fit in and take out. My expectations for this are surf the web, messenger, check messages, facebook, downe, type essays and listen to music and whatever else. I was able to run different things at one time(listen music and loading two pages on different sites.Like that you can turn the touchpad off/on,same with wi-fi(this one doesn't have bluetooth). The monitor can't go back all the way which is infuriating at times cuz i just need it at a wider angle. I took some stuff off the toolbar so it wouldn't look so crammed and you can make the text size bigger or smaller which is cool. I like this netbook(apart from the fact that it's my first computer).Nice and cute like a new born baby!! |
