1.0 out of 5 stars I'll never buy an HP again
I ordered this laptop new directly from HP a bit over a year ago. My last computer was an HP and it lasted for almost nine years, so I figured HP would be the way to go. The G70 seemed like a great deal - I upgraded to Vista 64 bit, 4 GB RAM, 250 GB hard drive and more processor than I would ever need, even doing the memory intense graphics work I do as profession...

This review is from: HP G70-460US 17-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
This is my first laptop and I accidentally found a good deal on this machine this week
and I got it for [..] after rebates. I really don't like a compact screen because it's
hard to read texts and I do a lot of image PPs so 17" screen is just perfect for me.
The screen is bright thought it looks to be a little glossy. This is a typical Vista
machine so start up is a little slow but once it's loaded up,it's quite fast.
My several co-workers have HP laptops and I thought their PC's wireless connection was
a bit slow and that surfing on the net seemed to be also a bit slow. This is when they used my
Verizon wireless modem. I don't know what models they have but I thought that's what I should
expect from a current laptop.

Wrong! :) This machine's wirelss connection is quick and surfing online is quite fast.
That's probably because of wireless N and T-6500 Pentium chip. I was looking at T-4200
machine but I'm glad I didn't buy it. This maxchine is built for multi-task jobs and it
does an excellent job. I haven't burnt any CDs/DVDs because I usually do it with my desk top.

If you're looking at this machine, you will be happy to hear what I'm going say about heat.
I used this machine for 5 hours straight and this machine handled the heat very well.
Yes,I felt "some" heat from the bottom and from the screen but it's not alarmingly hot at all.
I know this because all my co-workers HP laptops get hotter than my machine.

This laptop comes with 3 GB memory and its maximum memory capacity is 4 GB. I feel that this type
of machine should be allowed to expand the memory up to 8 BG. It is already fast but you know,
I felt that HP skipped a design on this respect.

Paying a full price on this laptop is not for people on a budget like me, but I just happened to
find a good deal and for the price I paid,it's a steal.

HP G70-460US is an efficient,fast,quiet,cool-headed machine and I highly recommend it.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP G70-460US 17-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
Outstanding buy for the money. Had everything I needed and expected. I research high and low to find the computer that had as many as the new features I needed within my budget and this model exceeded my expectations. Most other similar models will cost more than $100 and up.

Only negatives I have is some of the software installed is "Trial" versions from "Microsoft and Adobe". And they are expensive to buy! Thought I was getting the full versions or at least the basic versions. I simply installed the older software I already owned and problem solved. Not a fan of Vista but I'll live with it. I should be getting a free upgrade to the newest OS version but I didn't see it offered. Not actual "recovery disks" but 10GB is set aside for recovery or you can make your own!

For "HP" the computer fits my needs exactly and so far no complaints there. Large 17" screen, large 320GB HD, fast graphics, and surprisingly light weight (6.6 lbs actually less) compared to the older 17" model I had that weighed 9 pounds! I like the sleek and stylish design. It very quiet you can't hear the fans. Also the speaker volume could be louder, but it's adequate. With everything going USB it could use a couple more ports than just the three it has but an add-on will solve that. Built in camera and speaker works very well with "Skype". Even with the conveniently located "headset" connectors in the front I don't need too use a headset unless I want some privacy. Software for it has some funny graphics you can have fun with too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love this HP, August 9, 2009
This review is from: HP G70-460US 17-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
I had a 17 inch DP laptop for 8 yrs. never had any trouble with it. It just got old and worn out! I really love this HP so far. It has great feel of the keyboard. It is fast to download and upload. Love the built in cam, not bad quality. i use this as a table top computer. I don't ever take it anywhere. I think it would be hard to carry it, due to it is pretty heavy. The one down fall I have with it so far is I can not figure out how to turn the volume up or down without going to the screen. In other words I can not make the volume keys by the 10 key pad to work. Oh and I love the 10 key pad. That is a must for me. I am very pleased with this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Portable Desktop, August 16, 2009
This review is from: HP G70-460US 17-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
I call it a portable desktop because it provides all that a desktop has (including a numeric keyboard, 17" monitor), but is not tethered to a desk. All things considered, when closed it is a thin laptop. It would not be one that I would carry around a campus, but under some other circumstances I would not hesitate to take it with me. For example there was a one day photo class resently where I used it to take notes. Previous posts out lined all the specifications and installed software so I won't go into them again.

I will say that installation of some software I already own downloads quickly and smoothly. The shiny plastic of the top may be easily scratched so a still have the plastic film on it for now. Have looked at smaller computers with less features that cost a lot more than this one (found this on sale with a rebate). Would recommend this laptop for most people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Linux too!, August 5, 2009
This review is from: HP G70-460US 17-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
This HP G70-460US is a great computer. It came with Vista and I immediately formated and put on Ubuntu 9.04. Everything worked right out of the box including a neat feature added in Ubuntu. The wireless light blinks to show when you are sending and receiving data on you wireless. I am fully impressed with HP and more impressed with the Ubuntu team!

1.0 out of 5 stars I'll never buy an HP again, May 10, 2010
This review is from: HP G70-460US 17-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
I ordered this laptop new directly from HP a bit over a year ago. My last computer was an HP and it lasted for almost nine years, so I figured HP would be the way to go. The G70 seemed like a great deal - I upgraded to Vista 64 bit, 4 GB RAM, 250 GB hard drive and more processor than I would ever need, even doing the memory intense graphics work I do as profession.
Shipping was extremely slow. I paid for overnight and it took 5 days to get here. HP never apologized or offered a refund.
Once the laptop got here, it was great, even though I quickly learned I couldn't actually make use of the power I'd paid for. The fans are far too weak to cool the powerhouse they recommended I build and said would be fine. I had to keep the performance throttled at all time or the laptop would get too hot to even handle!
The USB ports were finicky and the SD card slot did not function half the time. I shrugged them off as quirks and figured I'd be able to live with it, even though repeated restarts to get a working SD card made my life difficult.

My warranty expired three weeks ago, the laptop is exactly one year old, and last night, the motherboard burned out in the middle of work with no warning and no prior symptoms. I called HP tech support, who refused to assist me because I was out of warranty. They said they would give me tech support if I paid a $50 service charge. I said no thank you, and consulted a friend instead. After running tests we reached a sound diagnosis that the only possibility was the motherboard. I placed another call to HP and asked to purchase a replacement part. They told me they would not sell me a motherboard directly, and referred me to two nearby 'official' HP repair centers. When I called, one no longer does repairs for private owners or the self-employed (and has not for some time), and will only service computers for big companies. The other has never been a repair center at all!
I tried calling some other local businesses and they all told me the same things - They do not carry the parts to repair HP laptops because the parts must be purchased directly through HP. Huh, really? That's not what they told me! I called HP back and they swore up and down they do not sell laptop motherboards to individuals, and I must go through the two repair centers I was referred to. After speaking to a supervisor, they reluctantly agreed to sell me one - For $392.55.

For the same amount, I can now buy a brand new comparable laptop from a different company, or better yet - Build a vastly superior desktop machine for less money.
Before all this I was an HP fangirl, and recommended their products to friends all the time. Now I will never own one again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Excellent, October 9, 2009
This review is from: HP G70-460US 17-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
Excellent laptop, everything is wonderful... well, except that it comes with Vista, which sucks horribly, but, oh well, can't blame HP for that. Wish wish WISH XP was an option!! But it's not on any new laptop, so...

For the price, this is the BEST laptop choice available at the time of my purchase!! I checked out many, many alternates and I'm very happy with this choice :)

while this laptop didnt cost anywhere near the junk accer cost me 3 years ago, there are some things i dont like.mainly the need to use 2 keys to adjust volume.secondly so far the pic quality doesnt look as good as a old beat up 3 year old laptop.not to mention a lot of work to adjust bright,contrast,etc.........but for the money...its a heck of a deal.i hope i can still say that down the road a few years as HP IS A TERRIBLE COMPANY FOR SERVICE.my rating for the model hp g70-460us is a 7.5.TERRY LINTON,BULLHEAD CITY,AZ

Why are you asking me now to provide a review for HPHP G70-460US 17-Inch Laptop now? It is actually overheating all the time and the entire surface becomes extremely hot. I like it but the weight is a lot to travel with. I don't like this overheating issue or how hard it is to downloads updates from HP.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Emotions, December 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP G70-460US 17-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
We received the laptop faster than we expected. We took it out and got it all set up and it was working fine. We were very happy. In the description, it stated that there was a loose screw on the screen. We were ok with that. But after using for about a week, we realized the screen was far more worse than we had expected. The corner is bent, and we can't even close it because it is off track. We're now debating whether we should return it or spend the money to fix it, if it can be fixed. Also, it randomly shuts off, and it doesn't display the battery life and if it's charging, like it is supposed to. Other than these few issues, it runs great.

At the present time, we have mixed emotions and we're trying to figure out what we want to do with it. If we had known how bad the screen really was, we wouldn't have bought it. :[
