We were one of lucky to get two $99 Touchpads (after pounding on the HP Small Business site for 8 hours one Sunday last August, I earned them). This adapter and USB cable with the distinctive mirror circles on each end came with each.
The cable is terrible. The metal connector at the mini-end of the cable is slightly longer in length (I didn't know that was possible, isn't there a universal manufacturing spec?). That extra length keeps the connector from seating properly into the Touchpad's USB socket, and causes an intermittent electrical/data connection.
BOTH HP-supplied cables that came with the 2 Touchpads had the same problem: Once plugged in, the slightest touch to the tablet or the cable started bouncing the connection. Nothing like watching your irreplaceable investment's screen flickering from a shorted electrical connection to get your heart pounding.
I tested the cable on other devices and had the same problem. On a Samsung Focus, I got an electrical connection to allow charging, but it would not make a data connection unless pressure was applied to the underside of the connector to tilt it in the phone's socket.
The
OEM Samsumg cable that came with our phones works flawlessly with the Touchpad's circular charging adapter, and provides a stable electrical and data connection. The HP cable's connector physically wiggles in the Touchpad's socket, but the Samsung cable seats firmly.
If you run into the same problem, I would highly recommend buying the Samsung cable.
On the positive side, the round charging brick is really compact, and the tines fold into the body, which makes it a GREAT travel item. It's also a two-amp unit, which means it will charge just about anything portable short of a notebook PC.
