I should have done more research into HP printer cartridges before I invested in this MFC. I run a small business and need a reliable, cost-effective printer. In order to save a significant amount of money, I use refilled cartridges. HP has put a time bomb in its cartidges by setting an expiration date on the cartidge. Even if the cartridge is still full! I would highly recommend this printer for some one looking for a all-in one machine. While it might be a little expensive, the quality is very high.

4.0 out of 5 stars HP d145 just in and great, May 13, 2002

This hard to find new all-in-one printer scanner fax copier meets all my needs and has one benifet over the Canon F50. I reviewed and looked over both. The Canon F50 is a bit more attactive but even though it has a wide flat bed scanner it will only scan letter size flat bed documents. The HP d145 has a legal size flat bed scanner. I need the legal size copier for real estate work so I went with the HP. They will both copy or fax legal through the automatic feed tray. The paper feeder wheels are wider on the HP. Reviews indicate the HP software does not dominate the operating system software as much as the Canon does. I like that. If more attractive and not such a dark color it would get five stars from me. The HP d145 installation CD should be Version 3.0 not Version 1.0 as was packed with some units.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works wonderfully with XP!, October 26, 2002

This all-in-one has definitely met my expectations in all 4 of its functions. It does exactly what it says its going to do and fits very nicely in a home office environment. I think that maybe some of the negative reviews here may have been due to the customers expecting a machine that will run copies, fax documents, print photos, and scan as fast as their nearest Kinko's Copies. If that is what you are expecting, then go to Kinko's Copies (or to your office job) to get your print/fax/copy/scan job done. As far as I'm concerned, the resolution on this machine is fabulous-even in "normal" mode, and it does a lot for such a compact piece of equipment. You can use the HP's software or Xp's "camera & scanner wizard" to scan documents and images. It does it all very cleanly and intuitively. Oh, and it does automatic double-sided printing if you set it to do so (i.e. go to "File" in toolbar, scroll to "Print",click on "preferences", click on "features" tab, check "double-sided printing" box), which is a great (and hassle-free) way to save paper! It also beats having to drive to Kinko's or go to work when I need access to a fax machine or scanner. This is my first HP as well as "all-in-one" purchase, and I am impressed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great multifunction, but below average print & scan, January 31, 2003
By
This review is from: HP OfficeJet D145 Inkjet Multifunction (Office Product)
I shopped long and hard before I settled on the HP d145 as the multifunction solution for my home office. Compared to the other affordable ... all-in-one machines, this one was the best. Although it was the most expensive, it's not perfect by any means.

PROS:
Fast plain paper prints and copies. EXCELLENT, mind-boggling plain paper copy quality. In fact, I printed some photos for a friend, and after printing 4 or 5 copies on photo paper, she preferred the plain paper copy over them all. Double-sided prints are a nice convenience, and the paper feeder is nice when you need to copy something that's double-sided and/or multiple pages. A big time saver over scanning the pages one at a time, figuring out how to place the front side in the feeder to copy on the reverse, etc... This feature alone makes the machine worth the price. The card reader works great, and although I usually just download my images to my PC and pick them for printing from there, the few times I've used the index feature (for when I just took a bunch of photos and wanted to show them to somebody right away), the speed and ease of it was very nice. The onboard LCD is comprehensive, easy to learn and use, and my 9 year old son figured out how to make copies on his own in about 10 seconds.

So why didn't I rate this machine 5 stars?

CONS:
Put simply, photo printing. I own a cheap (less than one hundred dollars) Epson color printer that embarrasses the d145 when it comes to photo printing. Why would HP put a PHOTO CARD READER on this machine, and then offer such lousy photo printing quality?! You can't print anything borderless without using a paper cutter or scissors after the fact. My Epson machine will print beautiful borderless 8.5 x 11 photos that are much sharper and photo-like at a fraction of the cost. Now I see that HP has a new model, the d155, that comes with an onboard print server, but appears that everything else is the same as the d145.

SCANNING: Not impressive. The spec sheet would lead you to believe that this machine can do some quality scanning, but I was very unsuccessful in that area. I have an older, SCSI HP Scanjet 5p that won't work with Windows XP, so I wanted something newer that would take it's place... The d145 scans were full of static and noise, as if it was running some sort of sharpen filter by default. I spent 30 minutes reading the manual and going through the settings trying to fix this problem with no luck. If you are content to scan at lower resolutions for web use, then the scanner is probably fine... but if you want high resolution scans for printing, I have some reservations about this machine. Also, it gives you the ability to "Scan to..." a few different applications, like Outlook, Word, and HP Scanning software... but I couldn't find a way to scan to my program of choice, Photoshop. I had to scan, then cut and paste to get the images into a graphics program for editing... which they needed desperately for touch-up because of the noisy scan.

CONCLUSION:
If plain paper printing and copies, ease of use, speed, and saving space are your priorities, then this machine is PERFECT. However, if you want to print nice, frameable photos, I suggest you do what I did and buy a dedictated photo printer ... You might also want a dedicated scanner as well.... which sort of defeats the point of an All-in-one doesn't it?

1.0 out of 5 stars Ink RipOff, February 4, 2004

I should have done more research into HP printer cartridges before I invested in this MFC. I run a small business and need a reliable, cost-effective printer. In order to save a significant amount of money, I use refilled cartridges. HP has put a time bomb in its cartidges by setting an expiration date on the cartidge. Even if the cartridge is still full! It totally stops working with no override available (there is an override for the ink level for refilled cartridges). Thier explanation for this is to protect us from degraded ink...The real reason is to force you to purchase expensive new ink cartidges at regular intervals whether you need them or not. It is interesting that they only do this on business oriented machines and not on the cheaper consumer models. The cheap machines must not need the "protection" from a degraded ink. I guess if ink costs per page is not an issue and having a ready supply of recently purchased ink cartriges on hand is within your budget, then this is the unit for you.

This thing is history!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good experience so far, December 21, 2002

Own the printer for about a year now; I drive it with Windows 2K Server sharing it to my home network; Works very nice;
A little slow to print pictures at high quality (as expected), but does a very good job. Only Thing I don't like (and that's why I don't give it 5 stars) is that there's not a manual-load tray, or input slot; I miss that when I want to print just a page in some sort of different paper or letterhead; You got to load the paper in the only tray there is and it is a little cumbersome when you try to load just one page or two.
Besides that, it is vey snappy, and love all the duplexing features it has, like copying from two-to-two one-to-two, and other combinations.
Faxing is very sharp (receiving and sending), the software is adequate; I recommend it to run it in a powerful machine (it could be slow on old processors)

I think I got my money's worth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best, June 19, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: HP OfficeJet D145 Inkjet Multifunction (Office Product)
I have been searching all over for a printer like this one. I really needed an all-in-one printer because I do alot of things on the computer. The cost is another thing. I found that at [local store]you can get this printer for [money]. This price was good since to buy all the seperate things this machine has, you would spend a fortune buying a seperate fax, copier, printer, and scanner. The printing speed is also very fast which is helpful. This is a great printer also for people who don't have alot of space to put a printer. alot of other all-in-one printers are big and bulky. That is why I like is nice small compact design. Even though it is small, this printer gets the job done. I think this is the best all-in-one printer on the market today. If you go all over the internet looking for more information on this printer, every time you will see that this printer is simply the best.

Pros: Excellent features and physical layout.

Cons: Software has strange quirks and it died after 60 days. Not happy!

The Bottom Line: I would recommend this unit if HP stood behind it. Replacing it with a refurbished unit after 60 days of very light use is ludicrous.

Recommended: No

I bought this unit, the 250 sheet tray and a 3 year warranty which promised next day replacement if the unit failed. On the positive side, I was highly impressed with this all-in-one, the features and physical layout are excellent and it works well with my telephone system. On the down side; just short of 60 days of ownership and I come home to find every damn light on the thing blinking like crazy and it telling me to turn it off and then on. After reading all of HP's technical docs, I call them and in 5 minutes they arrange to replace it with a refurbished unit. Their excuse: the product is so new that's all they have and on top of that there's a backlog and I'll have to wait 7 days to get the replacement. Clearly they shipped a defective product and people are returning them like tickets to a bad movie. I'd wait a few months until they fix the bugs. I'm a very unhappy customer, too bad because my job requires me to purchase hundreds of thousands of dollars in IT hardware every year and I have an excellent memory.

1.0 out of 5 stars Expensive and highly unreliable, January 21, 2006
This review is from: HP OfficeJet D145 Inkjet Multifunction (Office Product)
We purchased this machine several years ago, new, for ~$350. Considering how sparingly we used this boat anchor, it had a voracious appetite for ink. Since the ink came in a tri-color cartridge, when one color ran out you had to pitch them all.

Once we didn't use it for 2 weeks (on vacation) and when we returned we found that the cyan print head had completely clogged and the blue had partially clogged. Heavy amounts of cleaning would help, but the heads would just clog up again in another couple of days. So; in less than 1 year our color printer became a monochrome printer. That was until a few weeks later when the internal power supply fried and this thing would only emit a high pitched squeal. For the money we paid I'd expect better quality. My next multi-function will be a Canon PIXMA. My father in-law has had one for a year now and absolutely loves it. Separate cartridges for each color too.

HP laser jets are OK, except for their tendency of developing a multi-page feed problem after a year or so, but their ink jet printers are pretty bad. Stay away from this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BUY, December 26, 2002
This review is from: HP OfficeJet D145 Inkjet Multifunction (Office Product)
I shopped for a MF machine for months. My old HP printer was starting to go bad, and the scanner stopped scanning. We just purchased a digital camera and it was time to replace the old. The HP officejet 145 was the greatest purchase! Not only did it replace my scanner, printer, and fax, I know can copy color documents rather fast with great reproduction.
The software that is included is awesome. I can now take different photos and place them on one sheet of photo paper. This alone saves money in wasted photo paper. There are many options for photo layout and it becomes very hard to tell them from film.
This product has all the things rolled into one. For a home business, it really fits the bill.

If I had one complaint it would the motor that drives the scanner. It sounds like HP used the least expensive one they could find. It's kinda loud.
