short story - great unit for the price. Great printing and scanning and acceptable copying.

long story - I originally bought this unit on the spur of the moment due to a great deal. It's an HP so I thought it would be great based upon past experience. I got back home, read the other reviewers, and second-guessed my decision. I would have taken it back, unopen, but my college-bound daughter was very excited about the scanning and copying. I'm a long term IT Professional so I decided to give it a try, very hesitantly, on her brand new PC.

Setup was not difficult at all. Clear instructions were included although it clearly says NOT to connect to your computer until you have the software fully loaded. Not sure what happens if you don't read! I did think the sofware installation took quite a while on a brand new, high-end PC, but it didn't give me any issues.

Immediately, my daugher began copying, scanning, editing, and printing. The printing is great quality and would say the same for the scanning. The included sofware allowed her immediately to do editing. Again, she quickly made her favorite picture the background on her PC. I did notice that the cover to the copier has a little give, but I DID only pay $100 for it. Also, it cuts off a small portion of copies, but in my test, it was part of the very bottom URL line of an internet prinout . . . hardly a tragedy. I won't be using this for professional quality copies anyway. The copies were a remarkable likeness of exactly what I copied . . . no graying out occurred.

So, we are quite happy so far. HP may have corrected it's original issues so keep this in mind. I am wondering how long the print cartriges will last. They are somewhat smaller than my HP Photo printer, but not a large concern at this point. I have not yet priced the replacements.

Short advice is this is a good all-around-device for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good value in a very compact package, July 22, 2004

My experience with this unit is very different from the previous posters.

I bought this nodel because I couldn't find the cheaper 1210 model in stock, and I'm glad I did, (...). It worked flawlessly right out of the box with my Mac PowerBook computer, and I'm very satisfied with the print and copy quality. Even photos look great on plain paper (I haven't tried printing on photo paper yet). It prints somewhat faster than the 1210 model but is otherwise quite similar. The compact size is a real plus, especially when using it with a laptop, as moving it around is very easy.

I rate it at 5 stars, not because it's the best printer/copier/scanner out there, but because its combination of reasonable quality, ease of use, compact size, and affordable price hit the "sweet spot" for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great once you figure out the paper selector feature, January 12, 2005

I WOULD RECOMMEND BUYING THIS MODEL but wished I had read a review like this one first to save me a bunch of time - which, is why I write this. I hope it helps...

First, I bought this as a factory reconditioned item January 4th, 2005 at Staples. Normally, I would never consider buying a reconditioned printer, but at $70.00 USD, what the heck - Staples is easy going and never gave me any return problems.

CAUTION - this printer (or any other - anymore) DOES NOT COME WITH THE USB CABLE. You must buy it seperately.

FIRST TIME SET-UP: I have learned from years of frustration with HP drivers, it is just easier to get the quick hookup sheet and follow it exactly as it says. Even if you are a computer expert, save yourself the hassles, swallow your pride, and use the hookup sheet. Many of the other review posts I've read that complain about problems after installation, would not have had any problems if they just followed this simple rule. The instructions are easy to follow for any level computer user.

Now with that said, I will say that it took FOREVER to finish the software install. I believe it took so long because it was looking for every possible picture file in every possible location on my hard drive.

PRINTING: This printer prints very well - exceptional for $70.00 :) Although, it does not print even close to the speeds shown on the box. But, in HP's defense, I haven't found an ink jet printer yet that does, by any manufacturer. Draft mode is fast, Normal Draft mode is a very nice feature that is in between draft and normal. Example: Text printing with some colors and tables, I printed about 1 page every 8-10 seconds in draft mode, every 40 seconds in normal draft mode, and a grueling 1 minute and 50 seconds for normal mode. I didn't even try best mode because I didn't have the patience, and I wasn't printing photos.

READ THIS IF PRINTING ON ANY DIFFERENT PAPER STOCK. Boy I wish someone told me this - would have been great to actually put it in the online manual. When printing on labels, thicker paper, greeting cards, transparencies, etc... Go to printer preferences, change the paper style to "OTHER SPECIALTY PAPER". This will solve the - PAPER DOESN'T FEED PROPERLY problem I have read about in other posted reviews (and had myself). I was ready to chuck this printer through the window after ruining countless labels - not to mention lots of ink (printing in normal mode). Fortunately I happened upon this new-to-me feature (PAPER STYLE) while trying desperately to fix this problem.

SCANNING: Worked fine - no problems. Not the best scanner in the world, but again - for $70.00 you can't go wrong here.

COPYING: Worked fine - no complaints.

LAST COMMENT: This printer is LOUD! No matter what you do (print, scan, copy), it sounds like something might not be put together right. I have just learned to get used to it and not print after everyone else in household has gone to sleep.

Hope this helps...
Bonz

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible. horrible, December 2, 2005
This review is from: HP PSC 1315 All-in-One Printer (Office Product)
Anyone giving this printer a good review has obviously not used it for a long period of time.

It worked like a dream for about...7 months.

Then, it randomly stopped working and paper jammed to high hell.

And these are not easy to remedy paper jams. They are - you follow the instructions on how to clear them, and they don't go away...every single paper after the initial jam will never print normally again.

This horrible printer will just grab pieces of paper (even when it's not printing) and just freeze.

PLEASE, before you buy this, take a look at the negative reviews being listed in here. They are RIGHT!

It paper jams, wastes printer cartridges (I buy new ones and the quality is still horrid), stalls.

You might think you're getting such an amazing deal when you buy this heap of garbage, but you will pay for it in the long run, when you have to buy a new printer.

I bought this with the idea I was saving money, and getting a rebate deal. I mailed mine out perfectly, and of course never got anything in return.

Don't waste your money on this; you'll pay for it with headaches, anger and more money later down the line.

You may think I'm just bitter, and heck yes, that is true, but I am also making certain that people who feel they could use this to BEWARE. It is a horrid, horrid printer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Works ok for a very short time, December 26, 2005
This review is from: HP PSC 1315 All-in-One Printer (Office Product)
I bought this printer from Target for my daughter at college.

She was very happy with it for a few months, when it suddenly stopped working - wouldn't turn on at all. She spent hours on the phone waiting for HP tech support. She was sent an identical printer and had to return hers to HP. Unfortunately, it WAS identical in that it didn't work either. The next time she talked to tech support, they tried to talk her into trading up to a much more expensive printer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Multi function printer, December 1, 2004

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP PSC 1315 All-in-One Printer (Office Product)
I just bought a second one for my parent in laws. It is great for personal use. Exceptional quality, photo quality print on kodak photo paper, hey if noone even noticed it was printed. The copy feature is excellent and saves trips elsewhere. I homeschool my children so the copy feature is definitely an exceptional tool.

It prints really fast and has built in memory so it isn't taxing your system to print (unlike lexmark in particular). The scanner works great, I've scanned documents, pictures, worksheets, and more. The ability to also do a color copy is really nice. While I've only used it a couple times its still nice to know its there.

Setup is a breeze, the only glitch I had to do is delete the printer from device manager then install the software.

Aligning is a snap, it prints the alignment sheets you put it on the scanner and it aligns itself.

There isn't a more simple printer. Lexmark is cheaper but it doesn't have the memory buffer, is a system resource hog, and

takes forever to print color (despite claims).

I've never seen a canon that worked for any real length of time.

Epson is okay but can't hold a candle to this plus constantly is running into bugs.

Both HP and Lexmark make sturdy reliable printers and I've used both have been pleased. Lexmark's downfall is its time on printing and system resource usage. So this is your best bet for

this price range.

I've been happy and you will be as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for it's price, February 6, 2005

I just got my HP 1315 this week and finally had the time to set it up. With the installation process, I suggest that it will be more simple if you just follow the instruction that came from the box. The setup process was really long which got me kind of anxious, but at least it went smoothly.

What I like about the printer is the printer, scanner, and copier function as it is a very convenient little unit. The size is compact and using it is very simple once you have it all hooked up. The print quality of the scanned picture is impressive. The copying function is good in that you can choose to make either color or black. The only thing I am slightly disappointed is that that when I print a document directly from my computer, the print quality is not too good, but with a multi-functional unit, there are some compromises.

Overall, I think it's a good printer for it's price range. I especially like the fact that the unit can copy without being connected to the computer. However, I also forsee a lot of ink cartridge money which shall be spent in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars This little HP does the basics well., November 1, 2004
This review is from: HP PSC 1315 All-in-One Printer (Office Product)
The best feature of this printer is the copying. You can make up to 10 copies, one page at a time, either black and white or color. Given the price, its a nice little addition to the home office. The copies are about 95 percent (subjective) quality of the original.

As far as scanning goes, it's a pretty good scanner. The HP software is fairly intuitive to use and not overburdened by too much functionality.

The print quality is very good, however I've seen faster and very slightly better print quality in dedicated ink-jet printers within this price range. I guess that's a small compromise considering the unit copies and scans as well.

The printer seems to go through ink somewhat quickly, so make sure you pick draft resolution for day to day printing, which looks pretty good anyway. Ink cartridge replacements are cheaper than some other vendors relatively speaking. There are double capacity cartridges that can be bought more economically in packages of two.

As far as photos go, the printer is pretty good but I would recommend a dedicated photo printer or use snapfish.com instead for photo printing.

This unit does not fax. I have a separate fax unit that somebody gave me, so no problem. My computer isn't near a phone line anyway.

The printer is slightly noisy and jiggly in its day to day operation. All told, this unit comes highly recommended at doing the basics well, at a very low price point.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great in some ways BAD in others, September 10, 2005

Everyone needs to know that, as another reviewer mentioned, Avery special papers DO NOT work with this printer. You simply CANNOT use even business card-type papers regardless of the software you're using.

The HP software is a major problem, it essentially does not work. I've tried it on several PCs and laptops, and the scanner software only works if you use another (3rd-party) software program. It will not start on its own. It continues to "update" the software but never addresses the real problems, and installation takes forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Printer for the money, April 18, 2005
This review is from: HP PSC 1315 All-in-One Printer (Office Product)
After reading reviews on this printer I almost didn't get it. But the price was to good to pass up on for a printer that does everything. And so far I haven't had anything go wrong or bad. I read that some people were having trouble loading the software. And maybe some paper issues, but that could have been on another printer or another site. Anyway, please see below for my install, I hope someone may find this helpful.

1st: Follow the guide install sheet, set up the printer with the paper, ink cartridges etc. (also, go ahead and put it where it's going to be, don't plug in the USB yet though)

2nd: Load the software, can take a little time. This is where I ran into a slight issue. I got an error after the load, I kind of blew it off and thought it's fine, it wasn't. I tried a couple of little things, nothing worked. So I went in and un-installed anything related to the HP printer install. Then I re-installed the software over, (unplug the USB again before you do this if needed)

The second attempt worked, boom, printer was good to go. I suggest removing and re-installing the software if you run into any problems. Don't waste your time troubleshooting unless your bored.

3rd: The paper, I almost forgot, don't jam it in there to far, just place it gently.

The entire setup maybe took me two hours, I'm guessing though, I didn't time it.

Good luck, and enjoy the printer, I give it 5 stars, I hope it doesn't prove me wrong :)
