5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal machine, November 23, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: HP PSC 2410 Multifunction Ink Jet printer (Office Product)
I have been a fan of HP printers for a decade. I have found them to be reliable workhorses with consistent quality printing. This machine is my first HP all-in-one, and I am blown away by its capabilities. The photos are some of the finest quality prints I've ever gotten from digital photography. I have used a variety of papers for photo printing and find that the image quality is excellent even on cheaper, thinner papers. Plus, the printer doesn't jam or nick the photo paper like some other machines.

It's convenient (and cool!) to slide in a memory card from a camera, and print directly from the machine. Alternatively, the software bundled with this machine makes it easy to print from the PC.

For text documents, this printer is fast with clear, dark black text that rivals a laser printer in my opinion.

The scanner is my favorite yet with no weird scanner marks to ruin images. I have scanned film photos and then printed copies with great quality. The copier makes excellent copies on both color and black and white. I just can't get over the quality of the images that come out of this thing!

I hardly use the fax, but it works great and was easy to set up.

Make sure you have a USB cable to connect the machine to your PC -- it's not included in the package. Also, for true professional quality photos, make sure to purchase the recommended photo ink. The printer comes with standard black and color cartridges, but not the photo color ink.

I can't rave enough about this printer/scanner/fax/copier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!, October 30, 2003
This review is from: HP PSC 2410 Multifunction Ink Jet printer (Office Product)
I'm a satisfied customer. This unit prints amazing photos and also works great as a great all-around printer, fax and copier. I love the way it prints from digital camera memory cards and I can view the photos on the unit's LCD before deciding to print. This product is easy to use even for a beginner like me.

If you have this machine, you don't need to buy a dedicated photo printer (eg PhotoSmart 7550 or later). I am using the HP Photo Premium paper and it delivers lab quality results even at lower dpi. This probably have fewer (thus slower printing speed) nozzles than dedicated HP photo printers though. Fax supports color as well and very easy to setup. Color Copy features are very impressive.

5.0 out of 5 stars HP 2410 Does It All, December 2, 2003

I agree with all of the posts about the HP 2410. Easy to set up, all in one, even printing great quality photos right from the printer using the menu on its own LCD.

Two problems I had. One was because I did not read the booklet setting it up and the other was just learning how to do it.

One, when setting up the fax.... if you have two phone lines in your house make sure you use the phone cable that is supplied with the HP 2410. If it is not long enough, use the supplied cable( 2 wire cord) and put it in the wall outlet then add an extention or get a long 2 wire cord. I used a two line cable (4 wire cord) and could not get the fax to work. It kept trying to fax on both lines. See page 145 of booklet.
Second, if you are using a small XD-photo card to print directly....the slot to put the card in is a combo slot and if you push it in wrong and too far (which is easy to do initially) it is very hard to get out.

All in all it is a great machine and very glad we purchased it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great printer, but the software and tech support needs work, December 29, 2003

I purchased the 2410Xi last month because I could not believe what an amazing multi-function printer you got for so little money. Plus, my experience with HP printers has always been of the highest quality, so I tend to prefer them over other brands when I can afford them. Setup of the printer itself was amazingly simple. Setup of the software was another matter, here is what happened:

1. I could not install the software initially because I did not have 1GB of free space on my C: drive. I mainly use C: for Windows system files, and I try to keep all my data and programs on G: for safety purposes.
2. After un-installing some of my favourite applications from C: and re-installing them to G:, I managed to clear just enough space for the install program to be happy. Specifying an alternate drive was never an option, which is ridiculous in this day and age.
3. The install program crashed with an access denied error, so I used HP's recover option and reversed the installation. FYI: I was performing the install as ADMINISTRATOR.
4. I did some research and found out that this is a common error and you have to go into your registry to alter security settings for the installation to work.
5. After doing this, I ran the install again and received a different error pointing to one of the sub-program installation tasks failing because of a memory error. At this point I call tech support.
6. Tech support is a young lady in India reading from a web page. We'll call her Reena for the purposes of this document. Reena tells me not to use the Recovery option when the install fails because she is going to have me uninstall everything by hand.
7. I follow all her steps, only to find once again that the install program won't work because I now don't have 1GB of space on C: again. I asked her what happened to my free space, and why her uninstall didn't get back the space that HP had used up. She did not understand what I said and said I had to call Microsoft to learn how to free up space on my computer. Obviously, she is just trying to get me off the phone ASAP. So I tell her to hang on, and I delete my beloved PhotoShop from my computer just so we can continue with the installation of a printer.
8. We ran the install program another 7 or 8 times and received 2 or 3 different errors. The persistent one was a critical error, which she was unable to resolve. At this point, 3 hours later, she says that she has to go and speak to her supervisor. She comes back on the line a few minutes later and says that I have to completely reformat my system and re-install Windows XP. Obviously, this is unacceptable to me because that would take me weeks with all of my programs and data. So I ask to speak to the supervisor.
9. The supervisor, Raj, tells me that there is a problem with my CD and he has to send me another one. So I give him my address and he promises it will arrive in 2 business days. I receive a new CD one week later, the version of the software they send me is older than the one that shipped with the printer. I try the install again with the new CD and get the same error.
10. I call tech support again and get a young gentleman in Canada. He points me to a different uninstall routine and modifies it to have a 'level 4' uninstall. The system is rebooted, and we go through the install process again, and this time it actually works. It seems all those previous installs screwed up my configuration.
11. I hang up with Tech Support, and 3 seconds later the message 'StorageSync cannot access this drive. Abort, Retry, Cancel'. It seems the printer is clashing with my external SimpleTech USB hard drive. I now have to leave my SimpleTech unplugged whilst the printer is in use because it seems the printer has a drive of some kind built into it also which keeps clashing with my other external USB drive. I haven't yet plucked up the desire to call tech support again.

Having used the PSC2410 a number of times now, I can say that it is an absolute delight compared to my old Canon Multipass C5500. My old Canon used to stop printing at random times, it would refuse to recognise my print cartridges on various occasions, and I had various communication problems between it and the computer. The PSC2410 has an LCD screen and you can pretty much do everything using that and the built-in menus. The flatbed scaner is much easier to use than my old scanner which only accepted paper feeds. And the images come out as crisp and clear as the originals. As usual, HP has made a great printer, which is in my opinion the cornerstone of their company's business and deservedly so.

If you are going to install this printer on a Windows machine, follow these instructions before you do so and make sure you have a minimum of 1GB free on the C drive. If you do that, you should be OK:

http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search/document.jhtml;jsessionid=5HZKIBH3T5DEJQFIKSBENZQ?reg=na&cc=us&docName=bpu00682&lc=en

I hope this saves you a week of frustration and leads to a more enjoyable experience with your shiny new printer. Having problems like this with a USB printer is quite ridiculous, and it feels like HP rushed the software to get to market quickly. Let's hope they improve technical support, and also improve the testing of their software.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally an all-in-one that really does do it all in the home, March 6, 2004

The HP 2410 is the first "all-in-one" printer/fax/scanner that I've found that actually does all three jobs to my satisfaction. This little beast is excellent for light-duty home office environments.

The printer on the 2410 is a joy to use. Despite what others may have experienced, my 2410 prints text very rapidly for an inkjet printer; it is perfect for the home environment where one wants occasionally to print say, a 10-30 page document, and more often documents such as web pages of several pages in length. For situations involving frequent printings of hundreds of pages, a laserjet would probably be more appropriate, but that is not the application that this device is intended for.

The 2410 does a wonderful job with photos. I am an enthusiastic digital photographer and I am finicky about prints, but the 2410 does the job wonderfully, producing photos that are drugstore quality. I use mine in conjunction with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 and my Nikon D100 and the results are very satisfactory. I have not seen the need for a dedicated higher-end printer. The 2410 has become my main photo printer of choice.

The fax and scanner are fine for light and medium duty faxing and scanning. Again, if one is in an office environment involving hundred-page scans or faxes this is not the device of choice, but the 2410 is very adequate for the small office or home application involving the occasional fax or scan. I have been pleased with the reliability of the fax--I leave it on all the time and have had no reports of "I can't get your fax to pick up" which plagued earlier light-duty fax machines that I tried to use in my home office.

I have had my 2410 for about 5 months and it has never let me down. The machine installed with no hassles on my Windows XP PC and worked perfectly the first time. The software and hardware are well thought-out and easy to use. Everything about my 2410 works as advertised. The 2410 has been and continues to be a delight to own and use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great if it works, January 5, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: HP PSC 2410 Multifunction Ink Jet printer (Office Product)
I love this printer when it's working, but it's a tempermental beast for sure. I purchased one on New Year's Day, installed it with no problems and loved it right away. The photos I printed to compare with my old Epson photo printer were so much better - truer color, better detail, etc., even in 8-1/2 x 11. Two days later, a friend came over and asked me to print a photo from his compact flash card. Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention, but I didn't think it was that delicate. I put the card in upside down, and the light started flashing. The manual and website say you just put it in the right way and all will be well, but no matter what I did, the light kept flashing. The printer would work if the command came from the computer to print, but otherwise it would do nothing. The control panel was useless. After 1 hour with Tech Support in India, they told me to return it to the store and exchange for a new one. I suspected the pins were bent in the slot, but you'd think that would just make the slot unworkable, not the whole machine. Yesterday, I got a new printer. Tried to uninstall the software before reinstalling, but no matter what I did it would not install. 2 hours with technical support in India did the trick. I had to do 4 levels of uninstall before reinstalling the software. Now it seems to be working again just fine. I shined a flashlight into the compact flash slot and sure enough, the pins were fine and I confirmed I had bent the pins on the first machine. That makes me very nervous, so be careful when you insert a card into the slot. I may just forego it entirely and connect the camera to the computer rather than run the risk, which sort of defeats the purpose of having the slots there in the first place.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Quality . . . .When it actually worked., November 7, 2003

I bought this printer because it looked absolutely amazing. So many functions - and the print quality was super. It worked great for 3 days. Suddenly, unexplicably, a warning came up that the black ink cartridge was installed incorrectly. I fiddled with it (It's an HP - anybody can put in the ink cartridge, so I know it was in properly)and finally bought a new cartridge. The new cartridge also came up with the same error, so I returned the printer.

If HP could get that glitch worked out, I'd buy another - cheap ink, high quality prints, cool functions . . . I just wouldn't suggest buying it until they make them less bug-prone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Drivers destory a potentially useful product, June 28, 2004
This review is from: HP PSC 2410 Multifunction Ink Jet printer (Office Product)
After having a customer bring her computer in 3 times due to the operating system having been corrupted, I discovered that she had been installing the drivers for this printer each time she took her newly repaired computer home. I attempted to do an install of the drivers myself, and found that the drivers cannot be installed independently of the software, and that the software is horridly bloated in terms of installation space and processor usage. I highly suggest looking to another manufacturer for a Printer / Scanner / Copier that will meet your needs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Decent Printer but heed this WARNING!, May 15, 2004
This review is from: HP PSC 2410 Multifunction Ink Jet printer (Office Product)
A piece of Hardware is no better than the software that comes with it.
The HP PSC2420 prints wonderful (almost equal that of an Epson Stylus RX500). The real problem is not the Machine, but the software. It will load files larger than 2 to 3 Operating Systems.
Thats 1 - 1.5 GIGABITES just to print, scan & fax.

It cannot save your fax; there's NO view, no review, and more, it just can't do anything at all software wise, whether your sending or receiving.

Once loaded on ur computer this software will NOT uninstall. It does not delete 1 file out of the GIG loaded. Nor will it Uninstall all from the registry bigger than 3 books of "Gone with the Wind". It will remove some registry files, which will make it appear, as if the program is no longer on your PC.

There are over 15 steps required to uninstall much of it, but still leaves Megabytes of garbage in both files & the registry.
A simple Go to Add-&-Remove in the control panel won't do the job.

If you upgrade to higher software version, HEED!! because the way the upgrade is written, you cannot return to the lower version, and you will just have to be happy with function that were available in the older version but not in the newer one.

All in all, for the novice I cannot recommend the PSC 2410/2510.
Incidentally .. the PSC 2510 will slow your PC down up to 8 seconds when accessing another drive.

I also recommend, if you decide upon buying one; DO NOT install the critical update. You can very like loose drive data. More importantly, you may have to load your OS again.

Regards & Good luck.
