I saw a review of a Lexmark X83 which rated it extremely highly so toddled off to get one pronto for my budding business startup. Of course could not get the X83 only the X73 which was slower. They couldn't get hold of it , they only stock certain models etc etc (if u live in the UK you'll know what I mean, its like old Soviet central planning THEY ytell you what you can buy!)Saw the HP750 psc (not se or x just 750, are these better models?)
I was quite prejudiced against getting a HP because Ive used them at work -networked- and there's always been some sort of hassle (endless 'load letter' messages etc) I advised a friend to get a HP 970 inkjet based on a review and it printed OK (well, excellent scanned photos on glossy paper)but not good instructions and hassly setup.
I took the plunge and bought the 750 psc as it was in the store at the same price as the X83 was listed at and the spec seemed pretty OK and more than adequate (speed , res etc.)
I got it home after scrounging a USB lead (not you don't get one supplied in the box, what's wrong with these people? You can't print without it, I got one thrown in when I bought a cheaper Concord Eye Q digicam so put one in the box and don't be a scrooge HP!)
After the inevitable hassly setup (installed software, didnt work, uninstalled it, reinstalled it twice; BTW you really have to do exactly as it says on the (...) sheet in EXACTLY the same order otherwise it won't setup correctly)I got to work. Well, the copier function is standalone (doesnt have to be connected to pc) is VERY fast (it prints AS it scans) and very good quality. This standalone facility is good because I know how hassly and SLOW copying thru scanning then printing can be from past experience.
The scanning is similarly impressive though is let down by less than uintuitive software, particularly the OCR. The controls on the unit itself are good and I liked that the pc software shows you what the status of the LCD on the printer is so you don't have to get up to look etc, neat feature.
The printing in black and white is very impressive and almost embarrassingly fast - almost as if its spitting out your document with contempt as its got better things to do ! (fast mode is adequate for most needs)I printed out some business cards and the small black print of the address section belied the fact it came from an inkjet and not a professional printers.
HOWEVER...the colour Im not exactly sure of, hence the 'mmmnn...' in the title . Reviewers in magazines almost invariable pick some picture that is either easy to print so it won't show up flaws anyway or pick something you'd never print out in a month of sundays. I printed some shots taken on my digicam of the outside of my house and they printed out fine. However, the colours on the page do not always match the colours on my screen so, for instance, my business card blue had to be lightened on the pc several shades lighter before it came out as I wanted it , even then not brilliant. Pictures often come out a lot darker, I have to lighten the image in the HP printer control settings AND reduce the inkflow to minimum to get a closer replication of what I see on my screen. Is this the software, is it the printer? Is it the fact that my backlit LCD (TFT) laptop screen lightens the image anyway like a stainedglass window. Is it the paper? Well, maybe only time will tell as I get to 'know' my printer but I would have expected the blue to be the same on the business card , it actually comes out a bit 'dirty' looking. Skin tones are particularly variable. If you buy a colour printer you expect the colour to look very much like the colour on your screen or camera LCD monitor; you don't want to spend half your time second-guessing what the unit is going to come up with.
There are a lot of features and settings to wade thru so maybe in time i will have a better idea of where the fault lies. Certainly for outside type photos it prints out fine.
The fact that it is all bundled together in a sexy little package that uses up less desktop space and truly functions as a mini-office, copying scanning etc very quickly, noiselessly makes it a winner, so I would have to recommend with perhaps the proviso that you do several instore comparison colour tests with other printers before you make a decision.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the greatest!, January 12, 2002
This review is from: HP PSC 750 Multifunction (750se) (Office Product)
I love my new HP750. After having a separate scanner and printer and never being able to easily use the scanner, this one is a snap. It's for the people who don't want to spend all afternoon trying to figure out how to get the stupid thing to work. We plugged it in and off we went. I copied a picture of my husband and my dogs and me for our Christmas card and the copies looked as good as the originals. I can't say enough good things about this. For the price there is none better. Yay!!

5.0 out of 5 stars HP is definitely a better buy, February 4, 2002

This review is from: HP PSC 750 Multifunction (750se) (Office Product)
I originally purchased the Lexmark X83 becuase it was $50 less than the HP and all the specs seemed the same. The Lexmark is somewhat easy to setup, except for the print alignment. It prints out a page and you have eyeball a bunch of lines and pick the straightest one. At first, it printed fine and scanned in pictures with little effort. As long as I only printed out 1 copy at a time, it was fine. But then the troubles started. I couldn't get it to print anything beyond ten copies at a time. It would freeze up and give me an error or I would get an error stating that connection to the printer had been lost. Also, it doesn't print out pictures very well. It doesn't seem able to print out flesh tones. I upgraded the software and bios to no avail. After two days of building frustration, I took it back and bought the HP PSC750. This is a far superior machine! Basically plug it in, load the software and you're ready to go. Remember that print alignment I talked about earlier, well the HP does it itself! The print quality is awesome and I've had no problems with it so far. It's definitely worth the extra $50 bucks!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best multifunction in this price range., July 29, 2002
This review is from: HP PSC 750 Multifunction (750se) (Office Product)
This multifunction unit by Hp is better than anyting lexmark has. I originally bought the Lexmark x83 because of the lower price, but you get what you pay for or in the case of the lexmark less than you pay for. The hp psc 750 allows you to make great color or black copies. Using the creative copy function I recently enlarged a 3x5in picture to an 8x10in; the copy was crisp and beautiful, just like the original accept for its bigger, the picture was not messed up or blurred it was, well, perfect. If you are using Windows XP and you want to be able to use all the features you will have to order the XP driver from the hp website; the driver is free and pretty easy to install it takes about a week for the cd with the driver to arrive, but untill then it works with the driver built into XP.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you use Windows XP. . ., January 12, 2002
This review is from: HP PSC 750 Multifunction (750se) (Office Product)
Better check out the HP website. . .
All in all, I am inmpressed. However, if you use the new Windows XP operating system, the scan buttons will not funtion; you actually tell the scanner portion what to do from your computer (under "my pictures"). HP actually has good explanations on using this PSC with Win XP. It seems that no one has a printer geared specifically towards XP at the moment; though as drivers and software become available, HP will notify you (if you sign up for the email notification service).

3.0 out of 5 stars Mac OSX problems, March 20, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: HP PSC 750 Multifunction (750se) (Office Product)
I do reccomend this printer. I love the quality and I love the price. It scans and copies like a dream. Now, I also am using Mac OS X to use it and this little error occurs if you try to cancel a print project while using OS X . It causes all future print jobs to no longer be recieved by the printer. It somehow gets rid of all OS 9 software and the comptuer can no longer locate it in the USB . Anyhow I reinstalled the drivers and fixed it. It happened again. I now know what the problem is. To not cause this to happen again you can only cancel a print job by pressing cancel on the machine not the computer. Or it will happen all over agin. HP is working on fixing this and all will be well. Ido reccomend this all in one .

5.0 out of 5 stars Better then Lexmark x83/x73, June 1, 2002
This review is from: HP PSC 750 Multifunction (750se) (Office Product)
I've had my Hp 750 since Jan. 2002 and I think it is one of the best All in one machines out there for the price. I also have a Lexmark X73 and the print quality of the Hp750 is a lot better than the X73. It is worth the extra ... bucks. The Hp also prints and scans faster the the Lexmark.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect... some annoyances, December 2, 2002
By
Matthew Hunter "Technology Geek" (Blacksburg, VA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: HP PSC 750 Multifunction (750se) (Office Product)
This is by far my favorite printer yet - and I've owned quite a few. People often complain that HPs ink cartridges are so expensive. Well, they are - but I would still rather pay for them and get new print heads every time, then go through all the problems you can find with permenant print heads. I've owned two Epson's in the past, and both died due to pring head clogging. In both cases, I didn't use my printer for a few months at a time... and that was enough to permenantly destroy it. If this had been an HP, I could have simply swapped out the ink cartridges and kept on printing.

Enough about ink... let's talk quality. Although this is not specifically a "photo-printer," it does an amazing job of outputing photo's on HP Photo paper. I've printed and framed several photographs I've then given to friends. No one so far noticed it was a printout until I told them. Output on regular paper is also very good. The speed doesn't ever seem to be as fast as advertised, but it's never slow.

Now, the annoyance I mentioned in the subject line. I've had a lot of trouble printing web pages from Internet Explorer to this printer. I have two seperate computers, and have tried from both with mixed results. I have all the latest drivers installed. It prints some webpages with ease, but then gets hung with others. I have not been able to find a solution to this yet, but so far it isn't causing me enough problems to worry about it.

Overall, this is a great printer - the photocopy function works just like an office photocopier, with all the resizing and brightness functions you'd expect to find. If you're looking for an All-in-one, this is a great choice at a very good price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Versatile Package, January 30, 2003
This review is from: HP PSC 750 Multifunction (750se) (Office Product)
Though at first skeptical of multi-function devices, the HP PSC 750se has won me over! The small package combines an excellent printer and scanner and fits nicely in my apartment. Besides working with my computer to print and scan, it also works alone as a one-touch color or black-and-white copier. It's amazing how many uses there are for a handy copier at home!

The HP PSC 750se provides a great price/performance value. If you need fax or media card (i.e. from your digital camera) reading capabilities, compare the HP PSC 950 or HP PSC 2210 models.
