This desktop is powered by the 2.4 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ dual-core processor, which increases the efficiency and speed of the PC while running multiple programs and the latest multi-threaded software. Store more music, videos, and data on the roomy 320 GB Serial ATA hard drive, which offers fast transfer rates. It also comes loaded with 2 GB of RAM (which can be bumped up to 4 GB), an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 video/graphics card with 128 MB of dedicated video RAM, a wide variety of connection ports on both the front and rear of the box, and a 15-in-1 memory card reader that's compatible with today's most popular digital camera formats.

Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 X2 4400+ dual-core processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. It outperforms the highest-performing AMD Athlon 64 4000+ single-core processor on multi-tasking benchmarks by up to 30 percent. Dual-core technology is like having two processors working together, each one taking care of different applications, so power-users actually experience greater performance when multiple applications are running. Digital media enthusiasts will appreciate the enhancements while simultaneously working in high-definition video and photo editing and audio mixing programs. It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Enhanced Virus Protection.

This 2.3 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 2000 MHz and each core offers a 512 KB L2 cache--for a 1 MB total. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

  • Hard Drive: The huge 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.

  • Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (PC5300, 2 x 1 GB) is a good start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and gaming software. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. This desktop has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity (4 x 1 GB). To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

  • DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 8x DVD-R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 12x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds.

This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with an HP multimedia keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
Video & Audio
This desktop features an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE graphics/video card with 128 MB of dedicated graphics memory. Windows Vista can also allocate up to 623 MB of total graphics memory from the system memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications. It also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 8 speakers.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
For expansion, this desktop has two PCI slots (one available), one PCI Express x1 slot (available), one PCI Express x16 slot (available), two 5.25-inch bays (one available), and three 3.5-inch bays (two available). It comes with a built-in floppy drive and the following external connectors:

  • 6 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (2 in front, 4 in rear)
  • 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals (1 in front, 1 in rear)
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 2 headphone and 2 microphone (front and rear)
  • 2 line-in (front and rear)
  • Digital coaxial audio output as well as surround sound speaker outputs (rear/side/center)

It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. First, ordered this from Amazon and delivery was fast! It actually got here a week before the monitor (Samsung 226).

HP a6130n is a prebuilt desktop so you can't "customize" it. But for the value, you get alot of bang for your buck. Also, according to a friend who works for HP, the prebuilts don't have as many "issues" as those you customize. Since I've only had the machine up and running for less than a week and have not ever owned a "customized" HP, I do not know this first hand.

I see other users and pro reviewers have said the graphics is weak, but as a nongamer, the picture looks great.

Drawbacks: I wish hp would change 2 things.
1. it does not have a digital monitor output. Apparently that's pretty standard in new systems. According to an hp rep, this system has been available since June 2007 (despite what it says on the Amazon page).
2. lots of noise! It's very loud when I start it up or when I open up a program. I see another reviewer has praised how quiet this system is so I'm not sure whether I have a bummer one or not.
2.5 mouse-(minor, minor issue)- roller ball mouse, who knew they still made them?

Update: had to send it back. I talked to 4 different HP techs regarding the grinding noise. The last cs person I talked to was very knowledgable and nice. After running some diagnostics and actually listening to the noise over the phone, the guys at hp think this particular one I got has hard drive issues. But I have to say, the techs I chatted with online and phone were all incredibly nice.

After reading the reviews I feel I must comment. First, don't by this computer at Amazon. I bought this computer at BestBuy two months ago for $200 dollars less than it is listed here.
I bought this computer after reading the specs and KNOWING that the video card sucked. I fully intend to by a better video card for this computer as soon as the cash becomes available however, after going to Nvidia website and downloading the latest drivers and patches I've had very few problems with freezes and crashes.
I built my last computer and couldn build one this cheap for the price. Also, the hard drive is awesome. It is 400GB which holds a ton of videos, songs, and pictures. It has 3 GB of memory. It costs almost as much to buy 3 GB of memory as the whole system costs. It IS quiet! My roommate thought I was working on my computer while it was turned off the other day and wash shocked to realize that it just doesn't make any noise.
I would reccomend this computer to anyone who wants a great computer but doesn't play any directX 10 gams or for those who do play high powered games but know how to install their own peripherals (which is not all difficult for those who have more knowledge than how to operate a Mac.)
It is a great system for those who want a $1500 computer, but don't have $1500 dollars on them. Buy this system and add the card later.

First, for the money you spend on this thing, you can't expect a high end video card for new games. Nobody is going to toss in a $500 video card when the whole package goes for $600.
The integrated video actually does a decent job at older games such as Unreal Tournament 2004 and anything else that isn't too demanding.
My biggest complaint is the keyboard. It is cheap and quite unresponsive.
Some don't like the mouse, since it is mechanical. Personally, I hate optical mice and feel that a mechanical mouse that is kept clean or a trackball is a better choice.

Windows Vista is great. But expect a few headaches for compatibility when you get any kind of brand new operating system. Don't blame it on HP.

Update: 250watt PSU is somewhat limiting. BUT, it seems HP is no longer using proprietary PSU connections. Older HP systems had a bottleneck with proprietary connections, making power-hungry upgrades very difficult. In fact, I'm pretty sure I overstressed and eventually fried my last HP by overstressing the stock proprietary PSU.

This is no longer the case. Any standard power supply should work. So when the time comes to upgrade your graphics card, you may need to get a new PSU.

Amazon delivered the Computer in two days. I have it up and running loaded with all the programs I used. I like it and I am not having a bit of problems with Windows Vista Home Premium...I like the new features. No Floppy Drive in the computer. I have purchased an External Floppy Drive (CD-RW's can't replace the convenience of the 3.5" floppy).

I recomment HP Computers...You can go to Hp WebSite and download Maunals and also obtain CD's for Recovery items if the Recovery Drive (D) in the computer is not available.

Purchased this machine from Best Buy in mid-September. At the same time, I purchased an updated video card, supporting two monitors, one DVI (Digitial), more powerful power supply, and two extra GIGS of RAM - total price including tax $1,015.13

Expertise: 23 years PC software development and support.

Problems: Yes, there were problems, primarily with Vista. Yes, it hung nearly every day, even with the UAC turned off.

Pros: FAST! ahem, with XP Professional. Put this OS on last night, brought all drivers up-to-date, and this system screams! I am getting superior graphics quality on both monitors, frame rates in my games of about 130 FPS equalling smooth game play. This will translate into faster video development.

Support: A 5 on a scale of 1 - 10. Had to contact them for the Vista Restore media. Phone support would not send it to me, not even if I paid. Could not get it online, but, via chat @ 1:00 AM, they are sending it to me for free!

Folks, Vista is just not ready yet for all makes, models, and types of equipment. Sure it can and does work in certain scenarios, but not a lot yet on a lot of equipment.

Remember, XP had the same issues - incompatible with many pieces of equipment, until a few years passed and now, XP is very good OS.
