Great laptop with just few imperfections, September 8, 2008
This review is from: HP Pavilion DV5-1010US 15.4-inch Laptop (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Vista Premium) Black (Personal Computers)
Had this laptop for over a month at the time of this review. I am 96% satisfied with it.
It has a great number of features which are even unmatched by the more expensive notebooks.
That is, 4GB of fast DDR2/800 Ram memory, (currently among the largest RAM configurations sold); 320 GB 5400 WD hard drive (again, among the largest offered).
The laptop also has some other latest high-tech gadgets, namely an HDMI output and an e-sata port, which would allow connection of external hard drives without the loss of download rates.
It has a total of 4 USB ports one of which is combined with e-sata.
I am not a big fan of infiniti screen as it looks a bit greyish to me, but the colors are satisfactory when looking at the screen straight ahead. I had s year old HP DV4000 that had a better screen. The resolution is standard though 1280x800. Check notebookreview.com for more information. Some people like the screen.
Despite some arrogant criticism, I am very satisfied with Nvidia 9200m-gs. It is a mid range graphics card with some newest features like VP3 processor and a future support of SLI technology in which the computer will switch between integrated and dedicated memory.
The total video memory is 2 GB with 256 MB dedicated. The card runs cool at around 50 C even while gaming. The Call of Duty 4 Demo ran without issues on medium setting. I used the latest drivers from HP. The 3d Mark 06 scored 1742 points for this card.
I love the processor. It runs cool (40 c at idle with 28 C ambient temp) and is a very good performer. Super Pi to 2 millions i 58 second and dual core Super Prime is culculate in 39 seconds.
Wireless works well and so does optical drive. No issues there.
I like the new metallic style but the touchpad is aparently indeed too sticky. (Neither this nor the screen is an issue since I use external monitor (hp2207h), external mouse, keyboard and speakers.
One minor annoyance that made me give it only 4 stars is a slightly audible fan noise. I know that this is specific to my computer only as I didn't hear it the first few days.
So overall, it does very well with Vista and can handle dozens of applications opened at once with this huge amount of memory. When I opened all application I had including MS Flight Simulator 2004, all office programs and Corel Paint Shop, the RAM usage never went above 2.7 GB.
The construction seems sturdy and the keyboard is excellent with zero flex. Has two speaker out ports. All things considered, a great laptop that should provide good performance for the next several years.
This is sspecially so considering that it comes preloaded with 64 bit Windows and is expandable to 8 GB of Ram; + allows you to connect external high speed hard drives.

Extremely Unhappy, February 22, 2009
This review is from: HP Pavilion DV5-1010US 15.4-inch Laptop (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Vista Premium) Black (Personal Computers)
Had laptop 1 yr 3 months. The 1st yr. I was happy with this product. Now I am extremely Unhappy with this laptop and this Seller!
Appox 2 months after warranty expired I've had issues with the monitor. The monitor keeps flickering from the top right through out the whole screen. In addition there are times when I boot my system I have a black screen, which requires me to reboot the system multiple times until I can see the screen. I've talked to local PC Tech's and they believe that the video card is going bad or the monitor it self is bad.
I've contacted this seller twice now on the 24th & 27th of April 2010 and they have yet responded to my requests for assistance. As of right now I don't reccomend them or their products to anyone. Cause of their poor customer service.
If they do help me soon, I'll come back and edit this review.
One very unhappy customer!
Brian Vance

Very Poor Product, June 2, 2009
This review is from: HP Pavilion DV5-1010US 15.4-inch Laptop (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Vista Premium) Black (Personal Computers)
I bought this laptop because it had the right combination of price and components. I also thought HP was a good company that stood behind their product.
My previous laptop was an Acer. it was a great machine and ran like a champ. lack of disk and memory meant it was time for an upgrade. So, I gave HP a shot.
At first, it was great. it looks good and was very fast. The sound card was great and the screen clear and crisp. I took the weekend to load my copy of office and other programs I use. Everything was great until the following week when it suddenly locked up.
A reboot and it hung at startup. I had to go through the HP diagnostics to finally get the thing back up and running. This started to happen regularly to the point where it crashed at least once a day. Finally, it would not come up at all and I had to reload the OS. That means reloading apps and calling Microsoft to get new authorization codes.
I called HP and they had me run the diagnostics which said the disk was bad. I had another disk (I'm a programmer) and loaded the OS on it. Many hours later the system is back up and running again.
Not long after the crashing starts again. Not wanting to go round the bend again with reloading the system, I bought a third drive. This time I tried Linux to see if maybe it was a Vista issue.
Things go well for two weeks and the thing starts to lockup again. I call HP and they jerk me around on the telephone for several hours. They say I have to send the laptop to them and they will look at it. They say it is two weeks at a minimum.
I tell the non-english speaking rep that I'm not going to send it back and wait around forever. He says they need to replace the hard drive and I have to send it back to their service center to do that.
Think about it. Three drives later and these guys want to go for drive number four. That means a month later, I will be sending it back again.
At this point I plan to buy another Acer and go about the process of getting my money back for this lemon. I don't recommend this product and I am unlikely to even buy anything from HP that will require me to deal with their service people.
