5.0 out of 5 stars Great monitor
I really like this monitor. I haven't had any problems with the picture quality or mechnical issues, and have received many compliments from others regarding the looks of this monitor.

This review is from: HP Pavilion F1703 17" LCD Monitor (Personal Computers)
For those of you who have been trying to get this monitor replaced, I just got off the phone with HP Technical Support and, after screaming at three different people who kept telling me that they could not help me unless I paid for the privilege to talk to them (because the warranty is expired), I finally got to speak to a fourth person...a supervisor. After giving him my serial number, I was told that this monitor HAS BEEN RECALLED and will be replaced free of charge. I do not have the specifics yet as to how it will be accomplished, but I was given a case number and was told that he (the supervisor) would personally call me back within a day or two with the details. In the meantime, I still have to unplug the monitor and plug it back in every time it blacks out. This morning, that was happening every 2-3 seconds, but right now it seems to be ok for the moment. So, to everyone who has been ripped off with this monitor, get on the phone right now to HP Technical Support, tell them that you have a monitor that has been recalled, and don't take no for an answer. Good luck!!

1.0 out of 5 stars good monitor for those who like seeing black, June 2, 2005
This review is from: HP Pavilion F1703 17" LCD Monitor (Personal Computers)
Great. I've had this monitor for just about a year and suddenly the screen goes black for no reason. Press the button and the screen will work for another 8 seconds, then go black suddenly. Press it off, press it on, it'll work for 8 seconds.

Apparently from forums i have read, a vast majority of other owners have this monitor problem, and unfortunately there's no class action suit to recall the monitor. After a year of any of their products, HP wants nothing to do with you. Right now i'm using my faithful old CRT monitor too, the very thing i tried to replace.

Ah well, how utilitarian of me to support big business at the expense of myself.

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely poor quality, June 4, 2005

I purchased this monitor with a HP desktop on the 3rd of May 2004. 13 months and 1 day later, on the 4th of June 2005, the monitor screen would go black, but the power button would remain lit. To get it to work again, you would have to turn it off and turn it back on. However, this problem re-occurs again around 10 seconds later, rendering the monitor useless. Designed obsolescene. Isn't it fantastic?

1.0 out of 5 stars Good while it lasted :(, June 24, 2005

Excellent while it lasted. About two months after warranty expired, "Blackout" problems started. Same as hundreds of other results on various search engines. Monitor is useless now, I am also in full support of the possible Class Action that is being investigated. HP refuse to admit monitor has a problem and refuse to recall monitors.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mine HP pavilion f1703 lasts 16 months, June 22, 2005
This review is from: HP Pavilion F1703 17" LCD Monitor (Personal Computers)
After 16 months, my HP pavilion f1703 is burnt although
the power light is still on. The picture quality is not bad
but its lifetime is too short. I won't buy HP monitor again.

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm down $500, January 19, 2005

Everything started out fine, except, I couldn't quite turn it off. I'd have to unplug it in order for the screen to go dark. So I just left it to the screensaver and paid it no worry.

Needless to say, it's burnt out--under a year.

HP's customer service took my information (name/email/phone number) and said they'd do some research. This was the most disgusting part of the whole ordeal. I did not hear back from them. I emailed them a second time, and they gave me some tips. One of them worked, and my monitor was on. Problem was, it only worked because the monitor had been inoperative and disconnected for a month and had cooled down a bit.

Long story short, I'm over the warranty and they want me to pay in order to fix a problem that came with the monitor. Between this and the other HP products that have broken down on me, I'm never going to buy anything by Hewlett Packard again. Now that I'm five-hundred dollars down with a monitor that'll work for a little while every leap year.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is an extremely poorly designed product electronically, July 7, 2005
By

This review is from: HP Pavilion F1703 17" LCD Monitor (Personal Computers)
This product has a sturdy look, one of the best monitor stands of any lcd, and is almost 100 per cent anti-glare-- the three reasons I bought it. However, its electronics components were poorly designed which is why HP now makes its vs17c 17" lcd instead. Do not just take my word for it, a technician from HP told me this himself. My monitor blacks out with its backlight off. Then, after some time for some reason it seems alright, sometimes for a couple days. An lcd backlight and picture has an average lifespan of 60,000 hours of duty (6.8 years). However because of its poor electronic design, is much less than this. The amperage rating on its back cover reads 3.5A, however, if you hook an ammeter to its power source (know how to do this before attempting!) it might read much less, even 2.1A like mine. You can surprisingly (use test wires and do not cut the power cord!) disconnect the negative wire and your monitor will remain on! Then the ammeter might read 0.9 A like mine. The remainder of the 3.5A (minus 2.1A or 0.9A) is actually stolen from the computer through the video cable. You can never know when this monitor first malfunctions because this power drain through the computer still might make the monitor work, even long periods of time. If this happens it is broken (even if the monitor apparently works). HP's limited warranty for f1703 covers materials and workmanship free from defects for 1 year. However "HP does not warrant that the operation of HP products will be uninterrupted or error free." You should be patient, and have proper electrical diagnostic training if you purchase it (unless you like these sorts of things). Customer service also tries to sell you a "free" $327 upgrade to a 19" lcd (similar design) when your warranty is expired. I also believe it should be recalled because it is a product which almost, if not entirely, violates FTC law as a nonmerchantible product.

1.0 out of 5 stars WARNING PRODUCT IS DEFECTIVE!!!!!, January 29, 2006
This review is from: HP Pavilion F1703 17" LCD Monitor (Personal Computers)
Before you buy this piece of junk it would be wise to read the negative reviews. This f1703 monitor has offically been recalled and is a lemon. The monitor works fine for a while but after a year the screen starts blacking out. The screen will turn on then it will repeatidly black out. Do not buy this item, you will be wasting your money!! If you already have one it would be wise to call the service support number and get the f1703 replaced.

1.0 out of 5 stars Only lasts 2 years, April 20, 2006
This review is from: HP Pavilion F1703 17" LCD Monitor (Personal Computers)
Had this product for 2 years and screen started to turn black from the top of the screen down. Quality is lousy. I have a less expensive brand, smaller monitor that has been in service for 4 years without problems. This is the last HP I ever get for me or my company. Good luck if you have one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Another flake-out after one year, February 25, 2006
By
This review is from: HP Pavilion F1703 17" LCD Monitor (Personal Computers)
I was amazed when my monitor started shutting off and looked online to find others had the exact same behavior. The monitor was great until 1 year and 17 days. Talk about planned obsolescene! The warranty and the monitor expire at the same time. Fortunately, I bought the extended service plan at Best Buy, so its their problem for now. But, will it die in 3 months after I get it back again?
