Amazon.com Product Description

Take your living room on the go with the HP Pavilion HDX9010NR entertainment notebook PC, which offers an innovative folding, high-definition 20.1-inch screen, an HDTV hybrid TV tuner (with HDMI port for connecting to an external HDTV), and quad speakers with built-in subwoofer for amazing cinema-like sound. Further converging home cinema with portable computing, this HDX also includes an HD DVD drive that's compatible with the new high-definition DVD disc format, enabling you to enjoy amazingly crisp and vibrantly colorful imagery as well as immersive surround sound. Control media playback with the remote control, which fits into its own dock to the left of the notebook's keyboard.

Control media playback--whether it be HDTV, a movie HD DVD disc, or your music library--using the dockable remote control (which sits just to the left of the keyboard).
The 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 processor (from the newest "Santa Rosa" chips) combines with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT video card (with 256 MB of dedicated GDDR3 video RAM) to provide exceptional visual scene rendering for 3-D gaming, content creation, and HD playback. It's supplemented by dual 120 GB hard drives for additional storage and back-up space, 2 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), integrated pre-N Wi-Fi for the highest-speed wireless connections currently available, Gigabit Ethernet networking, and an eSATA port for high-speed data transfer to external storage devices--up to 6 times faster than existing solutions. Other features include a fingerprint reader for easy and secure access to the PC and online accounts, integrated Webcam with dual array microphones, and a stylishly dramatic high-gloss Dragon HP Imprint finish.

This PC also comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate, which combines all the features of Windows Vista Premium and Vista Business as well as adds extras such as multi-language packs and Secure Online Key Backup. It offers all of the features found in Windows Vista Home Premium, including Windows Media Center, Windows Movie Maker with high-definition support, and Windows DVD Maker. It also provides all of the features found in Windows Vista Business, including business networking, centralized management tools, and advanced system backup features. Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 processor has a 2.2 GHz processor speed, super-fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and an extra-large 4 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: This system offers a total of 240 GB of hard disk drive space from two 120 GB drives (5400 RPM). These Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives also quicken the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.

  • Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (2 x 1024 MB) is an excellent start, but you'll want to add more RAM to maximize the multimedia of this notebook (which has a 4 GB capacity).

  • DVD/CD Drive: This HP notebook offers the next generation of DVD entertainment with the HD DVD ROM optical drive, which provides the superior image and sound quality of high-definition images and multichannel surround sound as well as backward compatibility with standard DVD movie discs as well as content burned onto DVD-R/RW, DVD-RAM. It also incorporates a multi-format DVD/CD burner, which is compatible with dual-layer (DL) discs that can hold up to 8.5 GB of data.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Video & Audio

The 20.1-inch high-definition screen on this HP HDX notebook offers easy adjustment via the innovative hinged back.
The dual lamps of the spacious 20.1-inch WSXGA+ High-Definition HP Ultra Brightview widescreen help to deliver the same color depth as a plasma HDTV display with dual lamps delivers. It features a 1680 x 1050-pixel resolution (for native 720p high-definition resolution), as well as an innovative adjustable screen that folds open from a hinged back. The ATI Mobility Radeon HD2600 XT graphics processor delivers exceptional performance thanks to its use of ATI's HyperMemory memory management technology that expands the 256 MB of dedicated GDDR3 graphics memory with system memory on demand to provide more power when needed. (GDDR3--or Graphics Double Data Rate, version 3--is a graphics card-specific memory technology that's better able to deliver fluid frame rates for even the most advanced games and applications.) It delivers remarkable combination DirectX 10 gaming performance, and plug-n-play CrossFire upgradeability makes it easy to scale up graphics performance to boost the most demanding games. Connect to big-screen TVs with HDMI including built-in 5.1 surround audio to enjoy HD DVD movies.

The integrated HP HDTV Hybrid TV Tuner lets you watch, record, and pause live TV using Windows Vista or the notebook's HP QuickPlay TV feature. Use ATSC to receive broadcast HDTV transmissions or switch to analog for access to cable or satellite TV programming.

You'll enjoy amazing aural performance with the four discrete Altec Lansing speakers and HP Triple Bass Reflex subwoofer. The integrated amplifiers provide approximately 20W total output while supporting a full range of treble and bass frequencies for outstanding stereo. The HDX integrated audio processor supports the latest external PC audio speaker solutions without the expense of an external sound processor to enable immersion in true HD audio with a full-surround sound experience (up to 7.1 analog audio).

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion

You'll enjoy amazing 3-D gaming graphics thanks to the ATI Mobility Radeon HD2600 XT graphics processor, which provides support for the improved rendering of DirectX 10.
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 4965AGN Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments).

This notebook also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54 card slot (as well as a PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Here's the full list of connectivity options:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 HDMI output (for connecting to a compatible HDTV or home theater receiver for uncompressed digital audio and video via a single cable)
  • Video output: 1 VGA, 1 S-Video
  • 1 ExpressCard/54 slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
  • Integrated HDTV Hybrid TV Tuner (with F-Jack adaptor) input, S-Video input, Blaster (IR emitter), stereo audio input
  • Native external speaker configuration ports: Side, rear, center/sub, front
  • 2 headphone out, 1 microphone in
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader (compatible with Secure Digital, MMC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, and xD Picture Cards)
  • 1 expansion port 3
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Operating System
The Windows Vista Ultimate operating system has it all--an advanced, business-focused infrastructure, mobile productivity, and premium home digital entertainment features. It offers all of the features found in Windows Vista Home Premium, including Windows Media Center, Windows Movie Maker with high-definition support, and Windows DVD Maker. 5.0 out of 5 stars HP 20" Notebook-My dream computer!, November 27, 2007
This review is from: HP Pavilion HDX9010NR 20-inch Entertainment Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7500, 2 GB RAM, 240 GB Hard Drive, HD DVD Drive, Vista Ultimate) (Personal Computers)
This Notebook is huge! It's really not mean't for traveling, but is an excellent replacement for a desktop. It has all the bells & whistles and I had no problem setting it up. To date all software has worked perfectly and I haven't had any issues with the new Vista system. It's very easy to use and very attractive to have displayed in my kitchen or livingroom. The screen is large and bright HD with a arm to tilt it back to your comfort level. The sound is amazing for a notebook. We have really enjoyed it so far, and will post again if we have any issues in the near future. I can't find a single thing bad to say about this notebook, and am very satisfied with it's performance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Appended Review, December 7, 2007
This review is from: HP Pavilion HDX9010NR 20-inch Entertainment Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7500, 2 GB RAM, 240 GB Hard Drive, HD DVD Drive, Vista Ultimate) (Personal Computers)
I received one from HP as an upgrade unit as they did not have my custom laptop configuration. I received the max configuration with True HD screen, 4 Gig RAM, 64 bit Windows and Extreme 7900 Processor. I've only had the unit a day, and I've observed the following:

-HD DVD got stock in opened position upon ejecting a CD, was able to position it back into unit.

-Vibration from somewhere in unit when base is turned up.

-No latch on front of unit (the one that clicks when you close the screen on your laptop), I suspect the giant hinge creates enough force to keep it closed, but I'd prefer a latch.

The unit is very heavy. So heavy in fact, I thought it was stuck on something when I went to pick it up. Could really use a handle like the Dell, but would probably take away from the fact that is actually looks like my HP 9000 series laptop albeit somewhat bigger.

As of 12/08/2007 there are no 20 inch laptop cases available in the United States as far as I know. I did see the neoprene case and the Dell case made for there 20 incher, but I'm looking for the real thing. I had a friend in London buy and ship me a Dicota MultiGiant case made for these giant laptops and Ebags has stated they will stock them in 5 weeks. The case was really expensive esp. Int. shipping, here is the site (they sell it on the British version of Amazon, but I couldn't apparently order on that).

I'll post more as I review the unit.

****************ADDED 12/18/2007*****************
After using this unit for a few days, I discovered that the speakers mounted in the LCD were not working and that only the subwoofer was producing sound. I found six others online having the identical or similar problem. I called HP support 3X in an attempt to resolve the problem hoping it was a driver issue, however, after escalating the case to an HP engineer the recommendation was to send the laptop in for repair which I am reluctant to do due to past history of aesthetic damage to my laptop.

The first attempt to send the laptop in for repair resulted in HP sending me a box too small to fit the laptop. I had re-iterated to the support person that the laptop was very large and that it might be a good idea to verify the box size as I would not want to receive the incorrect packaging. Very Frustrating...

The second and now third attempt to receive a box for shipment to repair has resulted in no box at all. At this point, I plan to request a new unit be built and shipped in place of this defective unit. I am also lowering my rating of this laptop in lieu of the problems with both the hardware and HP support. Considering the price of this unit, I would have expected more from HP.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect, March 7, 2008
This review is from: HP Pavilion HDX9010NR 20-inch Entertainment Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7500, 2 GB RAM, 240 GB Hard Drive, HD DVD Drive, Vista Ultimate) (Personal Computers)
When I decided to purchase a new laptop computer, I did a lot of research. I wanted a unit that would be fast at loading screens and downloading data, but I also wanted to use my unit as a TV. Well, I got what asked for in the HDX. Its an entertainer lovers dream computer. Incredible sound for a laptop...no need for external speakers. The 64 bit dual processors make it MUCH faster than my desktop machine. Yes, it IS heavy and I agree a handle on it would have been a nice feature, but I dont move it out of the house much. I wish the battery life was longer but I knew that drawback when I purchased it. I just leave it plugged in most of the time. But its SO cool that I can watch HDTV with the built in tuner. I do wish the antennae cord was longer though.

The only real problem I am having with the unit is when I use Windows Messinger. The built in cam is dedicated to 2 programs on the computer...Windows Messinger and something called Quick Play (which I never use). When I try to make a video call on WM, I consistantly get an error that says my camera is already in use in another program, which it isnt, This is a frustrating development, as one of the reasons I wanted the laptop was so I could have mobile video communication with my brother overseas. It works about 2 times in 10, which is not acceptable. I know my problem is not unique....I have done some research online and others have had a similar problem. And the problem seems to be not with the computer, but with Vista. If this is true (and I am hoping it is) perhaps there will be future driver fixes for the cam. But at the moment, I am SOL.

However, having said the above, I LOVE my HP! It just a great machine and I dont have that many Vista compatibility issues since I use my peripherals with my desktop machine. I know none of them would work with Vista, so I do my printing and scanning and other such things on the desktop pc. Its only a minor inconvenience....I can live with it. So I wouldnt replace a desktop machine with this unit unless you have a back up computer with XP or plan on replacing your peripherals with new, Vista compatable ones. MS will get the bugs worked out, eventually, so I am not concerned. Its your call. But I recommend this machine :)

UPDATE- 9/9/09- Good news and bad news. I am able to use my cam with Windows Messinger and have been able to chat with my brother. However, it seems my sound card is bad....my audio was fine when I purchased the machine, then went down for several months, then started working again, then went down again and has been down ever since. I have external speakers, so I can hear sound but I bought the machine to be wireless, so this is a downer. I may have to get the sound card checked out. Other than that, I still love my machine. :)

UPDATE 2 - 6/20/10 - I found out it wasnt the sound card...it was a software issue. I took it to a repair shop where they changed out the driver to a working one and my sound was back!

I also got a new, digital antenna with a longer cord (and more powerful than the one that came with the laptop) so now watching HDTV is even better!

I bought a new printer and was able to seamlessly link my laptop to it wirelessly. Now I can print too.

I will probably be keeping this unit till it dies...not sure when that will be but I use it every day and keep it on mostly all day. But it still works great...a little slower now, which is normal for a PC....but still faster than my desktop machine and and I now use it to upload videos from my new video camera. :)
