5.0 out of 5 stars meets my needs

On account of the bad reputation of Windows Vista, I kept my old klunker Compaq Windows XP machine until Windows 7 came out.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK system if you're expectations aren't very high
If you're looking for:
-A small form factor case

On account of the bad reputation of Windows Vista, I kept my old klunker Compaq Windows XP machine until Windows 7 came out.

I got this HP Slimline and am very pleased. Got it with an hp 2009m monitor which seems to be the predominant monitor people tend to match it up with.

The fact that I was using a very old klunky machine no doubt prejudices me in the direction of being pleased with the new machine. But for what it is worth I am indeed very pleased.

I pretty much just use the PC for web surfing- I suspect for games you might want a higher end one. I didn't realize when I bought this computer that it only has the VGA interface to the monitor, not the more advanced digital ones. For my uses of the PC the interface is fine, but if you use your PC for videos you might want to look into it further.

I am pleased that the machine boots up in about a minute, my old PC took about a half hour, possibly some of that was due to viruses or something.

Along with the PC I bought a copy of Microsoft Office Home and Student version, there is a discount if you buy it along with a new PC.

It is nice to have a computer that responds promptly, in contrast to my old PC which ran like molasses at times.

So, I am grading this computer on an easy curve because it doesn't take much for a PC to be infinitely better than my old klunker.

But, for what it's worth, I like this machine a lot.

4.0 out of 5 stars really good PC, December 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP Pavilion Slimline S5220F Black Desktop PC (Windows 7 Home Premium) (Personal Computers)
My laptop broke so i needed a cheap PC and came across this. To be honest i wasnt expecting much of anything at this price, but its truly awesome.

Its running multicore processor so its really good for movie editing and other graphical needs, which i bought it for. Its stuper fast with all of my programs too, Photoshop movie editing, word, final draft etc...Its great. Runs them all efficently. Ive had them all opened at one time doing differnt things and the PC has yet to lag out and load for anything. I kinda wish it was Core 2 Duo or some other type of Processor, but the oens they put in it are not low grade, they are right there with the Core 2 Duos.

The case itself is really nice, I like the slim design and how well it looks. I opened it up and internally the PC is sound too, everything is set up great. There are plenty of fans to keep it cool, the thing doesnt make a single sound AT ALL unless you load a disc. The is one express PCI slot that is blocked though, i dont know why.

The bad? Internally it hard to find certain parts for the computer because its a slim deisgn so the parts need to be specially fitted. For example graphics cards, tv tuner cards etc...Its not any more expensive to buy or any harder to find, they just dont make the super high end graphics cards like that yet. It also only comes with built in graphics which is purely to run windows 7 properly and certain programs. It will not run any games on its own so you will NEED a graphics card, I got one for 30 bucks. It comes with alot of programs you dont really need. While some of the HP programs are useful to me now, I dont need things like Norton useless anti virus.

Overall Im impressed. Being a film person, IT tech guy, and a PC lover i wouldnt expect anything less from HP. And no the disc tray didnt jam...

We purchased (10) of these units, and with great tweaking some are still running, but the majority are dead with:
-Bad power supplies
-Crashed hard drives
-Faulty network cards
-Wireless that just stopped working

I do not recommend this unit to anyone who isn't interested in 'tinkering' with technology.

I bought an HP Slimline, and have had endless trouble with it. The machine, once it starts working and heats up, makes an unbelievable amount of noise. This is the fan which cranks up to cool down the machine. On that factor alone, I can't recommend the slimline series. In addition, I have had lots of trouble with the machine crashing once it overheats (and I'm not doing anything extraordinary with the machine). I may just have a bum machine, but did take to HP as well as two other computer places, but they have not been able to resolve the problem (HP said there was no problem). My advice to you if you take the plunge with a slimline, is to return it immediately within the return window if there is the slightest issue with it.

We have encountered some serious problems with this new computer. The computer shuts itself down sometimes while we are using it, the DVD drive cannot do back up, and the device test shows item failure. We have to send it back for repairs.

To be fair, HP's customer service is OK. At least we can speak to real people who seem to be willing to help us although we always have to wait for a long time.

All in all, it is a very disappointing buying experience.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY HP Pavilion s5520F, July 14, 2011
This review is from: HP Pavilion Slimline S5220F Black Desktop PC (Windows 7 Home Premium) (Personal Computers)
HP PAVILION S5520F

I purchased a HP Pavilion s5520F desktop computer in November 2009. I have only had this computer for 1 year & 7 months and the motherboard crash. HP is telling me because the computer is out of warranty they cannot assist me unless I pay to replace the parts. These people are a set of crooks. I asked a supervisor what's the average life of a computer he told me 3 years or more yet my computer did not even lasted for two years.

4.0 out of 5 stars NICE COMPUTER, June 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP Pavilion Slimline S5220F Black Desktop PC (Windows 7 Home Premium) (Personal Computers)
I have purchase this computer on Amazon two years ago. I live on the Island of Antigua. So when my system arrive and i install it to my HP 2009M 20-Inch HD LCD Monitor, I had no problem at all.
One, I find the Window 7 program to be a far better program than VISTA which constantly freezes and restart. Secondly this CPU comes with a card reader, which is great. Thirdly this computer did not comes with no recovery disk, But it tell you how to enter empty dvd and make your own recovery disk. Also a great advantage is that the keyboard that comes with this computer has volume control on it, so it is very easy to control the volume if someone is at the door.
I would give this computer a four star rating. Because for a computer that has almost 600GB memory it should at least have more than a dual- core processor.
I do love this computer and the price was good so i bought two.

2.0 out of 5 stars okay-don't connect anything to the USB Drives, March 12, 2011
This review is from: HP Pavilion Slimline S5220F Black Desktop PC (Windows 7 Home Premium) (Personal Computers)
Overall, pleased with the computer except ever since I got it home I have never been able to plug any USB flash drives or external drives to the machine without significant freeze/lock issues. Can't figure out even were to start to fix this, but despite this major flaw, it works great if you only want to backup/etc. to a DVD/CD disc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Design/Great Price, February 21, 2011

Ive wanted an HP Slimline since they came out & finally settled on this HP S5220F. I love the sleek, slim design & that its an HP since all my pcs/accessories have either been HP or Compaq. I havent had any probs with the pc or Win 7 whatsoever. There were a lot of HP installed programs that I didnt need tho & I took those out to create more space. No probs with overheating or strange sounds as the other reviewers mentioned. The pc is silent except when using the disc drive. Ive got it hooked up to a Dell monitor & HP printer with no probs.

The only probs that I came across is 1) that the INSTALLED GRAPHICS CARD is not big enough for gaming. And since this is a slim design pc, its hard to find graphics cards to fit it. I suggest if youre a gamer, get another pc model. And 2) that you cant add any more MEMORY, 4GB of RAM is the max. But for me, by the time I run out of RAM, Ill need a new pc anyway so Im ok with that.

All-in-all, Im extremely pleased with my HP S5220F. It may be small, but its packed full of features for a great price. Thanks HP.
