bought on black friday, light weight at 4.4 lbs and the computer runs quick and extra long battery life, the only thing keeping it from 5 stars is the touchpad,i have a little problem with scrolling sometimes, maybe i'm not using it right, but its harder to get used to than the dell 15r i bought and returned before this, it was smoooooth, but it was too big and heavy for me and wasn't as fast, overall i'm real happy with this computer and i would recommend it, i'd give it 4.7 stars out of 5

When it is working, it's a nice notebook. But in the 4 months that we have had it, it has broken twice, both times, where is simply refuses to start. The first time, after an hour of trying various things with HP tech support, they sent a return box, and then we got the same machine back 2 weeks later, now working. A month later, it failed again, refused to start (black screen again). So there are some quality issues, I think. HP tech support is decent. I'd just rather not have to talk to them!

I owned no less than 12 laptop in the past couples years, and I am impressed with the DM4-2191US/I5-2430 2.4GHz processor and how capable in running most applications. There are several features that I find quite valuable for this laptop in this price range: 1) Biomatric/finger scanning, 2) long battery-life, 3) solid construction and good keyboard feel, 4) Fan was very quiet, and heat is hardly noticeable. But I do find Windows 7 annoying when accessing certain file/folders and suffered from extended delay as this is a known issue. There are also a few minor improvement this laptop can benefit from.

To enhance the performance of this laptop knowing that the hard drive is slowing down the overall performance, I replaced the original 5400rmp drive with a 128GB Corair solid state drive, and I was impressed with the result! On waking up from sleep, it is usually about 2 seconds, like an instant on. Boot up from hibernation typically is about 15 seconds, another huge improvement. This laptop really rocks with this one single enhancement.

Having made the improvement above, the lowest system index was 6.3, with highest at 7.7, not bad at all. I would really enjoy the following improvement: 1) Provide an 90-degree anger power plug, 2) slightly brighter screen, 3) make a 4-cell battery available to improve the portability/reduce weight.

If one does not carry this laptop on the road, a 4-cell battery is not really needed. So far, I find

This HP model is just what I was looking for, a 2nd gen i5 which I upgraded with a speed SSD; the laptop boots in less than 10 seconds, the battery life is near 5 hours and the machine is fast enough that it will be able to handle a heavy work load for at least another 2 years. Very efficient machine, build quality feels great and after 1+ year of using it, the only physical damage that has occurred is a small dent in the back of the screen. Fortunately this hasn't caused any problems, a sign that the plastics/metal used to build the exterior of the laptop are doing their job. If you can find this for <$450 it's a great deal and will last you 3-5 years, depending on what kind of applications you run for productivity.

I'm writing this review almost two years after I bought this laptop. Bought this HP laptop from Staples for $450 on a deal from Slickdeals. This would be the first time I'm buying an HP laptop, I've owned Sony Vaio, Toshiba, Apple Macbook Pro, Dell Inspiron etc. till then (and even now). All the above said laptops have lasted more than 4-7 years. Granted, some of them I've had to replace the battery, certain keys, charger etc. but all of them worked without any component just dying.

HP Pavilion DM4-2191US is lightweight, looks good and came with a fingerprint reader. It only has 1 slot for RAM so if you're looking to upgrade then you have to replace it with a 8/16 GB stick. I never liked the keyboard and touchpad; both were flimsy and not very well designed and had bad layout. The display was nice even though it was glossy and had a lot of glare. The laptop was fast enough for most home/office work. Battery life was also more than I expected from laptop of this price. Wifi is a disappointment as the wifi card doesn't support the faster 5 GHz N band (only supports the 2.4 GHz).

Now to the bad. Right after the first year of ownership the hard drive crashed and I lost all data. I also lost all the software since I had lost the original keys for Office 2010 and some other cheap software. I tried to recover data from the hard drive but none of the recovery guys were able to get it done. HP doesn't ship any recovery discs with the laptop so you have to pay around $16 to order recovery discs. I ordered a new hard drive ($62) and finally replaced it. In a few months the LCD screen won't work and is just white. The computer works fine when connected to an external display. Now I'm ordering a replacement screen for another $50.

HP DM4-2191US
Pre-purchase concerns over weak wifi card never materialized. Gave this four stars based on value, form factor, reliability, good build quality, adequate performance and long battery life. Typically sold for $375-400 on sale in 2012. Has stood the test of time (1 yr) of daily heavy use. Went to the HP site right after purchase for directions on using the built in "minimal restore" feature. The bloatware now resides only in the restore partition. If price is right then recommended as entertainment and general purpose computing. Rugged cast aluminum chassis.

Praise:
fairly well built
very reliable
quite- CoolSense auto fan and temp control
easy to get a hold of HP tech support
HDMI, USB3 x 2
easy ram upgrade and hdd change (cover screws easily strip)
rugged cast aluminum chassis (see also con)
wifi adequate to good
fingerprint sensor handy
Win7 Home Premium configured well by HP. Required little attention except for keyboard driver. Has been very stable.
Bezel and hinge are sturdy
HP provided "minimal restore" feature allows any user to escape bloatware easily w/o the need to delete ...programs
Streams HD video very well
Decent speakers with adequate volume fidelity and L-R separation

Con:
Chassis of cast al adds to ruggedness, heat dissipation... and weight
Heavy at 4.4 pounds
Keyboard not back-lit, not good for heavy typing, keyboard failing,
Display: very tight viewing angle for watching movies as is typical of this display type, acceptable for ...general computing. Glossy display. Mediocre bright light visibility.
