To enhance the performance of this laptop knowing that the hard drive is slowing down the overall performance, I replaced the original 5400rmp drive with a 128GB Corair solid state drive, and I was impressed with the result! On waking up from sleep, it is usually about 2 seconds, like an instant on. Boot up from hibernation typically is about 15 seconds, another huge improvement. This laptop really rocks with this one single enhancement.
Having made the improvement above, the lowest system index was 6.3, with highest at 7.7, not bad at all. I would really enjoy the following improvement: 1) Provide an 90-degree anger power plug, 2) slightly brighter screen, 3) make a 4-cell battery available to improve the portability/reduce weight.
If one does not carry this laptop on the road, a 4-cell battery is not really needed. So far, I find
HP Pavilion DM4-2191US is lightweight, looks good and came with a fingerprint reader. It only has 1 slot for RAM so if you're looking to upgrade then you have to replace it with a 8/16 GB stick. I never liked the keyboard and touchpad; both were flimsy and not very well designed and had bad layout. The display was nice even though it was glossy and had a lot of glare. The laptop was fast enough for most home/office work. Battery life was also more than I expected from laptop of this price. Wifi is a disappointment as the wifi card doesn't support the faster 5 GHz N band (only supports the 2.4 GHz).
Now to the bad. Right after the first year of ownership the hard drive crashed and I lost all data. I also lost all the software since I had lost the original keys for Office 2010 and some other cheap software. I tried to recover data from the hard drive but none of the recovery guys were able to get it done. HP doesn't ship any recovery discs with the laptop so you have to pay around $16 to order recovery discs. I ordered a new hard drive ($62) and finally replaced it. In a few months the LCD screen won't work and is just white. The computer works fine when connected to an external display. Now I'm ordering a replacement screen for another $50.Read more ›
Pre-purchase concerns over weak wifi card never materialized. Gave this four stars based on value, form factor, reliability, good build quality, adequate performance and long battery life. Typically sold for $375-400 on sale in 2012. Has stood the test of time (1 yr) of daily heavy use. Went to the HP site right after purchase for directions on using the built in "minimal restore" feature. The bloatware now resides only in the restore partition. If price is right then recommended as entertainment and general purpose computing. Rugged cast aluminum chassis.

Streams HD video very well
Decent speakers with adequate volume fidelity and L-R separation
Chassis of cast al adds to ruggedness, heat dissipation... and weight
Heavy at 4.4 pounds
Keyboard not back-lit, not good for heavy typing, keyboard failing,
Display: very tight viewing angle for watching movies as is typical of this display type, acceptable for ...general computing. Glossy display. Mediocre bright light visibility.Read more ›
