5.0 out of 5 stars A truly innovative machine
This is HP at its finest. An affordable notebook with lots of cool media features. Its beautiful design and widescreen add to the fun. We use it wirelessly in the living room to surf the web while watching tv or listening to music. The dv1000 comes with iTunes software, so we ripped all our CDs and now have all our music saved to this notebook. With an RCA cable hooked up...

1.0 out of 5 stars Power supply problems within one week of purchase
It seemed like a great machine at first, but the power supply broke after several days of use (the machine would not power up AT ALL).

I contacted HP tech support and was connected with someone who barely spoke English. After reading from a script for nearly thirty minutes, I was advised to "take it back to from where you purchased it."

I am...

We use it wirelessly in the living room to surf the web while watching tv or listening to music. The dv1000 comes with iTunes software, so we ripped all our CDs and now have all our music saved to this notebook. With an RCA cable hooked up to our stereo A/V receiver, we now have access to all our music without CDs. We connect the PC to our big screen tv using the S-Video connection and watch high quality slide shows of our digital photos. (with OUR music in the background!) We are having so much fun with all the possibilities. This wonderful little machine has brightened up our house and given us a glimpse into the future of where living room technology is headed. Next step for us...the HP Digital Entertainment Center for a complete living room solution, and the HP iPaq Portable Media Center for media on the go. Can't wait!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good machine, terrible OS, June 28, 2005

The HP DV1000 series is a strong line of Notebooks with plenty of excellent features that won't break the bank.

The major draw back to this machine is the OS.

XP home edition is standard with this laptop and that's a shame. In my opinion XP Home is the worst Windows flavor out there. It is weak, it constantly has errors, driver support is a joke, advanced users are left to deal with an inferior product. I had 9 serious errors in under 24 hours, if this were XP Pro it would have been three. Wireless configurations using WEP encryption will leave you pulling out your hair, XP Home makes changes for you instead of giving the user complete control and because of this the Wireless connection will work for 3 minutes at a time until XP Home decides to keep your settings and not mess with them anymore. If it wouldn't void my warranty I would Put Linux on this machine and at the very least XP Pro, if I could get away with putting either one on I would be giving it 5 stars.

The Hardware though, is the most important.

The processor is excellent, the 512Mb Ram makes the computer run pretty smooth and is upgradeable to 2GB (You should seriously consider getting at least a gig of Ram to really see what this machine can do!) The 60 Gig HD is fast and perfect for serious mobile users. The Wireless adapter works very well and the graphics chip will run the standard games, this is in no way a Gaming Laptop however if you're not a gamer than it's perfect for your needs. The DVD/CD-RW reads and writes without much hassle.
The remote located int he PCI port is a neat little thing to have. Memory Card reader on the side is a must have these days (Note to Apple: make a card reader standard on the iBook and the PowerBook already), USB 2.0 and Firewire port is easy to find and use. Two headphone jacks are a nice perk to have. The Laptop runs quietly and doesn't get too hot, even after extended use. The Widescreen Monitor is beautiful, Widescreen movies playback crisp and in Widescreen; the size makes web pages look better, my Web Site looks pretty sweet in Widescreen.

I just bought this for work and have taken it on the road, so far so good however I will update the review it things change.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Laptop, September 22, 2005
This review is from: HP Pavilion dv1010us Laptop (Intel Celeron M Processor 330, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I only paid 1000 bucks for my dv1010us. I am a student, and it works great for all of my needs. I've taken it on trips its on all most constantly in my house. If you're looking for a powerful machine that will do everyday applications and has room to spare end your search here.

I love my computer.
