Screen, Graphics and Sound
You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 15.4-inch WXGA high-definition screen, which displays an 18 percent larger picture than standard 15-inch screens and offers up to an 18 percent improvement in contrast ratio. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200M IGP video/graphics card, which delivers good, though not high-end, 3D graphics. It provides 128 MB of dedicated video RAM shared. ATI's HyperMemory technology allows the chipset to run in either Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) mode or with dedicated frame buffer memory to enhance graphics performance. It also features an integrated audio card with microphone and headphone jacks.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The dv5040us has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. It also offers Bluetooth wireless connectivity, which enables you to synchronize and transfer files between the PC and peripherals such as cell phones and PDAs. You get a very basic offering of connectivity options:

Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. Additionally, it enables you to control your television with the included remote and record and pause programs (much like a DVR--or digital video recorder--such as Tivo or ReplayTV). It's compatible with cable, digital cable, satellite TV and antenna inputs, and it includes an FM tuner.

The included HP Image Zone Plus photo and imaging software makes it easy to organize, edit, share, print, protect, and store your photos and video clips. Organize and find your photos easily by timeline, keywords, and/or location using the unique photo-globe mapping tool. Remove red eye and fix other common problems. Share your photos quickly via e-mails that include thumbnails with links to the full-sized images--without downloading time-consuming attachments.

I have owned this notebook for 2 months now, and it has performed beautifully. I wanted something that would be an entertainment/work computer all in one, with a decent sized hard drive and no lag time or freezing up when running multiple applications as I had alot of trouble with that with my old Compaq notebook. I can record movies (I bought an additional tv tuner since this laptop did not have one built in), download video and music on iTunes and surf the web all at the same time. Media Center is a joy, and the lightscribe feature is also great. Bluetooth wireless is a pleasure, and the little remote that comes with the laptop is alot of fun. You can easily watch a movie or listen to music from across the room with the impossibly small remote. I have not experienced any problems with the keyboard buttons, but my solution is simple- ALWAYS purchase a service plan that goes beyond the manufacturer's warranty. I haven't had any problems yet, but I certainly expect to sometime in the next 3 years (par for the course with all electronics IMHO), and for a couple hundred dollars more I am covered. FYI I bought my laptop through Compusa.

Bottom line: I am thrilled with this purchase for entertainment purposes and I would definately buy this model again.

This is a lot of computer for the money. Fast processor, built-in bluetooth, big hard drive, Lightscribe (which is cool).

Having said that...

Mine is one week old and already having keyboard problems. This is a very old story with HP. I had an HP years ago and the keyboard eventually reached the point where many of the keys would not work. Owners have complained about it for years. (Check the numerous notebook forums.)

Calling tech support is useless. You reach someone in India who speaks little English and can only recite from a script.

At $1,400+ for this machine, avoid it. Try Toshiba, Sony or Fujitsu. A few more bucks, but it will have a keyboard that works. HP has had years to fix this and hasn't.

No more HP's for me.
