At first I was a little skeptical because I heard many reviews saying that AMD's new automatic switchable graphics feature doesn't turn on for OpenGL applications. As a result, software created by Adobe like Photoshop or older games like Minecraft will run slower than usual or not at all because the laptop will only use the intel graphics. However, since I do not use those type of programs I decided to take the risk because the features and performance were too great to pass. IF YOU ARE A HEAVY USER OF ADOBE OR OPENGL PRODUCTS, THIS PC IS NOT FOR YOU!!! I do expect AMD or HP to come out with a software fix eventually since this issue is present in pretty much all recent AMD switchable graphics.
Once I bought it, HP preloaded it with so much bloatware it slowed the computer down severely when I first started it. However, as an experienced computer user, I was able to disable many of the unnecessary add-ons and prevent useless startup programs from running and also uninstalled programs I knew I would never use. Some HP programs seemed like a complete waste of space and computer power such as the HP connection manager, especially since Windows 7 can help you connect perfectly fine. After all that, it runs incredibly well and boots up really fast.Read more ›
i just received my HP pavilion 6190us , it's a very elegant shape all from aluminum , sure except the base , this giving it some luxury, it's weight is OK about 2.5 -3 KGS include battery, regarding the performance it;s wonderful specially i'm software developer, they battery life time is about 3.5 hrs with high brightness , but it's loaded with many useful software, but it's easy to be uninstalled and another thing the black touch Pad and keyboard makes it fulled with your finger prints but easy to be cleaned, I highly recommend it to everyone searching for a powerful and elegant laptop ..HP Pavilion dv6-6190us Entertainment Notebook PC (Silver)
My big and really only major complaint is the fan. If you're just doing word processing or internet browsing the laptop is very quiet, but if you're playing a game (even an older game) or anything else that's graphics or processor intensive the laptop gets very hot and LOUD, even if you use the integrated graphics instead of the Radeon graphics. Imagine a blow dryer on the lowest setting and you'll get an idea of how loud it can get.
A couple of other minor complaints:
The button to eject the Blu-Ray drive is really hard to press, even after jamming my fingernail into it. It's easily ejected by right-clicking on the drive in the My Computer window so this is mostly a minor inconvenience. The other thing is that the power brick really is almost the size of a brick. It's huge! The power cord is also pretty thick which is nice, but coupled with the huge power brick it makes it really hard to stuff into a computer bag.
The one thing that I would like a new control "center" for is the switchable graphics option.
Pros: It has really nice specs, a stylish silver body and a really crisp screen. The equalizer included in the Beats Audio package makes it a multimedia dream and it has more than enough USB ports for anything that you could want to use with it. I enjoy having a number pad on the right side of the keyboard for use when using Excel or doing other calculations. HP includes some software, but nothing that cannot be removed easily.
Cons: Unfortunately, the cons may outweigh the pros for any future buying. The laptop is LOUD. I have read various articles that tell me it is due to the i7 processor running hot in general, but, even when my computer is running only Word, the fan kicks in to gear. I use this computer in graduate school and it is embarrassing in the classroom when it is more noticeable than the professor. While the aforementioned number pad is great, the right side of the computer feels structurally weaker than the left. When you rest your hand or use it, you can hear a creaking noise reminiscent of the computer actually bending under you. The trackpad is unnecessarily backlit, because the keyboard is still dark. I realize it probably does not use much power, but it's an unnecessary battery drain.
This laptop was my first foray back in to Windows after using Apple products for so long. Even if the computer was better, HP has been notoriously slow with driver updates. If it fits all your specs, it's not terrible but I would look elsewhere.
