1.0 out of 5 stars Never again HP
I've had this laptop for many months now and it is about to go on eBay so I can buy something better. The worst part of all is the battery, I'm lucky to get even 90 minutes out of it. For an i7 it is incredibly slow, no faster than any other laptop I've seen. I find I make many more typing mistakes with this keyboard. Add in issues with the graphics card causing trouble...

So I bought this laptop yesterday and it arrived today. I only got to use it for an hour before I packed it up and sent it back. My caps lock button would turn on with each button press. Its rather annoying but Amazon is sending me a new one. Overall this laptop is very nice. Beware though, the touchpad is bad. Do yourself a favor and buy a mouse with this. On a very positive note, this laptop is fast and the screen is gorgeous!!! Buy it and a mouse, but beware of the broken caps lock.
Update!: Well my new on was delivered yesterday so I have had a little over a day with it. Its very nice. Like I said before, this puppy is fast. It runs MW2 perfectly. Although it does get rather hot. The keyboard is sweet and it feels perfect. The trackpad on the other hand is ehhhhhh, Its hit or moss most of the time. Overall I would highly recommend this to anyone in need of a cheap high-powered laptop. Buy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A huge monster of a laptop; fast fast fast, September 16, 2010
This review is from: HP Pavilion dv7-4080us 17.3-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
A number of people on here have complained about the mouse pad. It is true that the default mouse settings need some help. Here was my fix. Right click on "Show hidden icons" in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Select "Synaptic Device Properties." Select "Device Pointing Properties." Select the "Device Settings" tab. Make sure the "Synaptics ClickPad" device is selected. Click the Settings button. Select the "Pointing" element in the tree on the left. Under the "Pointing" heading, select "Momentum". Enable the "Momentum" checkbox to the right. Click "Apply." Poof, your mouse pad is now awesome.

This is a power-hungry, extremely fast beast of a computer, appropriate for video editing or C++ game programming.

If you haven't worked on a 17" screen before, prepare to have a ton of screen real estate with this puppy. The display is sharp and bright.

The i7 core plays nicely with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. Builds run in parallel on 8 cores and go hella fast.

You'll need to get a new shoulder bag for it. It won't fit in your old one. Make sure it is a light shoulder bag.

This geek approves of this laptop as a primary computer for geeks and developer types.

4.0 out of 5 stars Super Fast, August 20, 2010
This review is from: HP Pavilion dv7-4080us 17.3-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
I've had this laptop a little over 3 months now and I can say I like it very much. The finish is nice and the processor is super fast. The laptop has tons of features. The only negative I would say about the laptop is the eject button for the dvd drive is too small for not only the avergae man but anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT LAPTOP!!!, September 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP Pavilion dv7-4080us 17.3-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
This is a great laptop! The screen is big, bright, and crystal clear, the speed of the laptop is amazing as well. If you never had a 17" laptop before it feels a bit different but you will quickly adapt and enjoy your new choice. Alot of people have criticized the touchpad, but I didn't think it was as bad as some made it out to be. If you are use to a touch screen phone such as the iphone, the touchpad isn't all that bad, my only problem with the touchpad is the scroll feature, I still haven't got it down but its only been a week so I'm sure I'll get it soon. Do yourself a favor and be sure to order a carrying case of some sort for it, you'll need it. I would recommend this laptop to anyone, especialy someone that needs or wants a computer with some power, and the price isn't bad as well!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Laptop, September 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP Pavilion dv7-4080us 17.3-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
I've had this for 1 month now and everything works as expected. Great spec's for the price (that's why I purchased this particular model). Runs all my programs well and is very quiet even when the fans kick on high when playing demanding games. Runs very cool when doing operations that are not very CPU intensive like surfing the web or word processing. The only time it gets a little warm is again, when playing demanding games that use allot of CPU and GPU resources. But that's to be expected. Battery life is about 2.25 hrs. if you're surfing the web. Not bad for a rig with these specs. There are however, a few things that could be better. As mentioned by previous posters, the track pad takes some getting used to. I use a low profile wireless mouse so for me that's a non-issue. The keyboard is your typical not-so-great laptop "chicklet" style. If you're going to do allot of typing, you may want to consider a usb or wireless keyboard. You can get a combo pack mouse and keyboard for a pretty reasonable price. My suggestion would be to go to Best Buy or someplace and try the keyboards on multiple brands of laptops and see for yourself what you like and dislike. I think most laptops leave a little to be desired in the keyboard category. My biggest complaint is the speakers. With all the hype of the beats audio, the speakers themselves just don't cut it. Even with the sub woofer they're not very good. Overall a very nice, fast computer with good build quality at a great price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great laptop except for the mouse pad, August 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This laptop is fast and has great capacity. The only thing is the "flat" mouse pad (no buttons) that is very annoying to use. If you are going to buy this laptop, make sure you get an external mouse. Other than that, it works great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good computer, lousy touch pad and scroll, July 21, 2010
This review is from: HP Pavilion dv7-4080us 17.3-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
I have had this computer for a couple of days now and I can say that overall I am happy with it except for one thing. The touch pad and scroll are terrible. I really like this computer except for that issue. Unfortunately I am bugged enough to send it back. I was on the phone with HP for over an hour trying to get it to work better and I couldn't.

Everything else works great. Fast, can do a lot on it. Sigh.... I am so bummed but I just can not get over this issue.

For an i7 it is incredibly slow, no faster than any other laptop I've seen. I find I make many more typing mistakes with this keyboard. Add in issues with the graphics card causing trouble and I end pretty unhappy with this thing. It takes forever to boot the thing, and when it goes into sleep mode it takes forever to come back out of it. And this is an Intel i7 CPU? This thing should scream speed, instead of remind me of the good old days when a Pentium was top of the line. And the fingerprint reader works some of the time, other times, doesn't work at all. My replacement PC certainly won't be an HP.

2.0 out of 5 stars HP Pavilion Laptop- Walk away from this one, October 15, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP Pavilion dv7-4080us 17.3-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
Glide pad is the pits and is the most difficult to use of any laptop I've used in the past 8 years. Computer runs hot and is LOUD with fan errors continuously displaying. Several keys stopped responding 3 months after the warranty expired. I can now only use the laptop with an external keyboard and mouse, which defeats the purpose of me buying a laptop in the first place. I would NOT recommend this computer, and I would never purchase it again.
