4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, December 23, 2010
This review is from: HP Pavilion dv8t Quad Edition series - FULL HD (1080) - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Intel Quad Core i7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB), 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 230M, 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm), 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, 18.4" High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p), Fingerprint Reader, HP Mobile Remote Control, LightScribe 8X DVD+/-RW Double Layer Support, Wireless N, Gigabit Network Card, HDMI, Webcam, 8 Cell Li-Ion Battery, Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
A real powerhouse for the money. The big issue is the button panel on top. It can be fixed by HP or you can DIY by removing the keyboard and reinserting the loose ribbon cable. It took me about 45 minutes and has been working ever since. I installed a second hard drive to this beast(have to purchase second hard drive caddy) and 8 gigs of ram. Now VMWare workstation runs great! I would recommend this to anybody looking for a workstation replacement.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good buy if hardwired, December 22, 2010
This review is from: HP Pavilion dv8t Quad Edition series - FULL HD (1080) - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Intel Quad Core i7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB), 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 230M, 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm), 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, 18.4" High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p), Fingerprint Reader, HP Mobile Remote Control, LightScribe 8X DVD+/-RW Double Layer Support, Wireless N, Gigabit Network Card, HDMI, Webcam, 8 Cell Li-Ion Battery, Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
This is a great machine, capable of everything you want it to do. Everything except stay connected to the internet. Google search "problem pavilion Dv8" and you will see that this laptop is plagued by buttons at the top for controlling videos and music, and even your wireless connection. Though convenient, these buttons are poorly wired and often activate themselves without your input, which gets particularly annoying when your wireless internet decides to stop. HP has done nothing to fix this problem, and many customers who send in their laptops wait months to get them back, and to find that the problem still persists. If you intend to connect this via wire, then absolutely buy it. If you want a nice laptop for use anywhere in the house, avoid this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst computer I have ever owned, December 27, 2010
This review is from: HP Pavilion dv8t Quad Edition series - FULL HD (1080) - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Intel Quad Core i7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB), 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 230M, 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm), 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, 18.4" High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p), Fingerprint Reader, HP Mobile Remote Control, LightScribe 8X DVD+/-RW Double Layer Support, Wireless N, Gigabit Network Card, HDMI, Webcam, 8 Cell Li-Ion Battery, Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
Typical of HP to add so many HP extras that things just keep getting in the way. It has some nice features but generally they don't work reliably. It has a very nice feature on the keyboard that allows you to just touch and features are switched on or off. Within days of receiving the new powerhouse the wireless on-off keeps switching itself on and off. The sound does the same thing. Speaking of sound don't expect anything special the sound is terrible. Period.
The external monitor connection provides a lovely grey, or bright, or grey constantly changing display. I have two machines so I have checked the attachment on the other machine to confirm this is an HP feature.
I have called HP and I have searched the Web for drivers no help. By the way there is much said about the problems I have mentioned above but no-where does HP acknowledge them or offer any kind of support.
It has a 2nd bay for another drive. This is wonderful until you try to use it. But HP don't recommend its use and told be the guarantee is void if you do.
I am extremely disappointed with this machine. If I could afford to change it I would. I have even bought another drive to mirror the OS because I am not confident of its reliability.
