Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. For the Pavilion ze5470us, HP has selected an Intel Pentium 4 processor operating at 2.66 GHz. This specific model is not one of Intel's new breed of Pentium 4s with enhancements such as Hyper-Threading and upgraded Level 2 cache, yet it's certainly powerful enough for virtually any typical notebook task and even a few you may normally have reserved for your desktop PC.
Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. Increased RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Pavilion ze5470us incorporates 512 MB of 266 MHz RAM, a typical allotment for most midlevel and high-end notebooks and certainly enough for standard multitasking demands.
Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need assistance translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). The best graphics controllers feature on-board "dedicated" video memory rather than "sharing" portions of the system's all-important main memory. This unit features an ATI Mobility Radeon with 64 MB of "shared" video RAM, and thusly is unable to smoothly display high-end 3D applications such as games and animation. It is, however, perfectly sufficient for most 2D tasks and some minor 3D work.
Display
The Pavilion ze5470us is equipped with a generous 15-inch display, equivalent to the viewable screen area of a 17-inch CRT desktop monitor. The maximum supported resolution of 1024 by 768 is again standard in the world of modern notebooks.
Hard Disk
Unheard of even a couple years ago, the system's spacious 80 GB hard drive delivers plenty of room for storing programs, user-created data files, and an impressive library of music and video files and digital photos too.
Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Most drives allow you to do a combination of these tasks. This unit includes a DVD-RW/CD-RW drive through which you can perform all of the above actions.
Audio
The unit is equipped with two comparatively potent Altec Lansing speakers, a 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro-compatible audio chip, a stereo mini headphone jack, and volume controls and a mute button,.
Keyboard and Controls
You'll control your notebook via an 88-key keyboard, touch pad with On/Off button and dedicated vertical Scroll Up/Down pad.
Connectivity and Expansion
The Pavilion ze5470us offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, an RJ-45 LAN port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and integrated 54g wireless technology for fast cord-free e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a public hotspot. Other key amenities include three high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), and infrared technology for wireless interaction with infrared-equipped peripherals.
Operating System and Software
The bundled software package is headed by today's most accepted operating system, Windows XP Home Edition. Other applications include the Corel Productivity Pack (WordPerfect 10 and Quattro Pro 10), Quicken's New User Edition financial suite, and a broad range of music and multimedia utilities.
Dimensions and Weight
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. At 12.96 by 10.72 by 1.93 inches and 7.25 lbs, the Pavilion ze5470us is of average size.
Power
Power is delivered via an 8-cell Lithium battery.

A good computer but a little noisy,
By A Customer
This review is from: HP Pavilion ze5470us Laptop (2.66--GHz Athlon XP-M 2400+, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I bought this computer this summer to take to NCSU in the fall. So far it has been just right for my uses, provides convenience when going from wireless to cable internet, processes things very quickly, and so on. The only problem is that it gets a little bit warm and the fan is noisy at times. Its also a little heavy to carry around and the battery life is poor. If you don't intend to take it anywhere for use without a power connection, then this might be the computer for you. Another bad thing about it is when you are typing, the touch pad often selects another part of the page and your type will continue on somewhere else. i would definitely recommend getting a small mouse to go along with this computer.

I have this one myself, I bought it in Oct 2003 and in Dec of 2006 the hard drive crashed. I went to HPs website and they want $665.00 for a replacement and that's without tax or shipping. Up until this, it was working fairly well, I didn't really have too many problems and I was enjoying it. I didn't really even use it all that often so I am a bit upset that the hard drive went out so quickly. But, per one of the earlier reviews I read, it seems to be an issue for HP, so I will say, my next laptop will not be an HP, wish I would have known now what I didn't know then kind of thing.

HP Pavilion ze5470us Notebook PC,

A pretty good computer, but as with all HP's, there are hard drive issues (3 replacements for mine), fan cooling issues (2 replacements for mine) and not enough ram or video memory. Other than that, it is a good computer to use if not for graphics and animation. For those types of activities, a Mac is better.
