The mid-size HP Pavilion zv6270us is a great desktop replacement, adding mobility to its powerful multimedia and home office computing features. The widescreen 15.4-inch Brightview display is perfect for watching DVD movies, as well as keeping you productive across several open document and software windows. It's powered by a strong and nimble 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor, with a front-side bus speed of up to 2000 MHz. Other features include an 100 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), multi-format DVD/CD burner with dual layer support, ATI Radeon XPress 200M video card with 128 MB of dedicated video RAM, 54g wireless connectivity with 125HSM/SpeedBooster and BroadRange support, and 6-in-1 memory card reader that's compatible with a wide range of popular formats.

The Basics

• Hard Drive: The 100 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is above average in size for notebook PCs. It offers more than enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors. You'll also be able to store a good-sized digital audio library.
  
• Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 3500+ processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. This 2.2 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 2000 MHz and 512 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.) It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Cool'n'Quiet Technology that conserves power while also keeping the PC nicely quiet.
  
• Memory: The 1 GB of built-in memory (DDR SDRAM) is a good start for power users, and it offers what's becoming an average RAM speed (333 MHz). It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 2 GB (2 x 1024 MB).
  
• CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, this multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. Screen, Graphics and Sound
The 15.4-inch WXGA high-definition BrightView widescreen display has a 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. You'll get TV-quality images, even in direct sunlight. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200M IGP video/graphics card, which delivers good, though not high-end, 3D graphics. It also offers 128 MB of dedicated video RAM. ATI's HyperMemory technology allows the chipset to run in either Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) mode or with dedicated frame buffer memory to enhance graphics performance.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The zv6270us has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. The 125 HSM/SpeedBooster support will enable it to be ready for tomorrow's 125 Mbps wireless LANs and the BroadRange support provides your 802.11g connection up to 50 percent more range than competing technologies. You get a decent offering of connectivity options, which does include super-fast USB 2.0 and Firewire:

As this is my first laptop, I wanted it to be at least as up to snuff tech wise as my aging 1.8 pent Dimension 8200 (this desktop was a higher end dell several years ago). So this 2.2 AMD seeems slightly faster than my desktop (which also has 1/2 the memory-takes SUPER expensive RDRAM if you can find the right type).
I have had no problems out of the box, I was able to wirelessly network this thru a router and communicate with my desktop to access files. The machine has a good balance in your lap , when you actually have the large widescreen LCD display up it doesnt want to tilt forward at all.
Suprisingly, the machine runs pretty cool. The fans do sometimes run at high speed, but normally they are pretty quiet. Performance is splendid with DVD movies, and I am pretty impressed by the littly puny speakers, they actually manage not to sound, well, too puny. I suspect that there is some kind of DSP or EQ going on here that is pretty effective. The logo says ALTEC LANSING, which is a name "audio heads" will be familiar with, so I suppose they're on to something here. The LCD panel is well detailed and free of motion artifacts, and provides a very stable image. The normal horizontally limited viewing range is typical of LCD panels. Nice Machine, very up to date styling but not obnoxiously so. Recommended

This is my second laptop. The first one was a Toshiba with a 17" screen, but I discovered that it wasn't very "portable". This new laptop is not only half the price of my first one, but works so well. First of all, it is superfast with the Athlon processor and the 1.24 Giba of Ram and it includes the double layer DVD drive for DVDR and DVDRW. Besides, the screen is very clear and I'm really happy with this purchase.

I purchased this laptop on January 6th 2006 and was told it would ship within one -two business days.......Here we are on the 23rd of January and it still hasn't shipped. BUT, it gets better. Not only have I waited this long for it to ship, but I am being told that I cannot cancel this order either since its "so far along in the shipping status"............DONT BUY IT
