1.0 out of 5 stars paper jams
I returned an epson 325 photo for having constant paper jams. All kinds of paper jams. I was told the 7760 was the way to go. Well, after 4 days, with calls to HP, It wouldn't print any envelopes. HP told us to give the envelope stock a little push. After that all we experienced were more jams, and ink all over everything.. We returned this unit. While in...

I'm no expert with computers so if I'm able to get started easily anyone can. The easy start instructions got me up and running in no time without any assistance from my more computer literate sons. The HP7760 accepts a variety of memory cards which is helpful in a family that boasts three digital cameras with three different memory cards. The small screen that is on the printer allows the user to view the images without a computer. The printer can view, crop, rotate, enlarge, and select the size and quantity of prints without computer assistance. The printing time was a tad slow but the quality was as good as any professional digital prints I've purchased. It's 'almost' as good as 35mm.

The paper tray has a slot for 4x6 paper making it easy to print copies of photos without wasting expensive larger size photo paper. One minor annoyance is the requirement for changing print cartridges to print black and white, photos or typed material, so if this is your only printer you'll be changing cartridges frequently. A convenient little device for protecting and storing removed cartridges mitigates this problem slightly but one extra cartridge slot would have been far superior.

If you want to go beyond the basic editing available through the printer itself it is simple to install the software that is included and to attach to your computer using an usb cable that is not included.

All in all I'm very happy with this new printer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect printer, March 30, 2004
By

This review is from: HP PhotoSmart 7760 Photo Printer (Office Product)
My husband and I went to Aruba on our honeymoon with our new digital camera. After shopping around for approximately a month, we decided to buy the HP7760 mainly because of the 1.8" LCD screen - no computer necessary.

The guy at Best Buy told me I needed a USB cable, which is true, but it is not necessary unless you are printing from your computer. He tried to sell me a $30 one; I went to Walmart the next day and got one on clearance for $12.

The printing is absolutely wonderful! The colors and hues are so rich, it looks like you are there in person. The blue sky is as blue on the picture as it was in person! Same with all the other colors! I have not run into any problems with little stars or black lines appearing on my pictures, and since I installed it about two hours ago, I have printed more than 50 4x6 prints using the HP Premium Photo Plus glossy paper. The prints are instantly smudge-proof, but take longer time to dry if you want to put them in an album (especially the ones with the dark colors). I feel the quality is equal to that os lab processed prints. I took a picture of the sunset one day and the oranges and reds just jump off the picture at you.

I also haven't had any problems with any paper jams or "ink failed error" as some other reviewers have complained. The tray can only hold 20 4x6 cards at a time, so don't overload it and you'll be fine.

I also liked that it came with two ink cartridges, one color and one photo. After 50-something pictures, the cartridges are still going strong. I also bought a black cartridge and color cartridge (a combo pack at Best Buy for its sale price of $39.74, regularly $53) and a gray photo ink cartridge along with a second photo cartridge. In addition I bought the HP plus glossy and matte paper (haven't used the matte yet)

One word of advice (and it tells you this in the manual): When you place the paper in the 4x6 tray, make sure the side you're printing on is down and the perforated edge is toward you. I made the mistake of putting the paper in backward and had a couple prints come out with a white stripe on the end where the perforated edge should have been.

This printer is great for the price and ease of use! No complaints whatsoever!

I just received the 7760 in the mail today.
I had to run to Walmart because I forgot to order the USB printer cable. After I hooked the printer up to the computer which took about 10 minutes ( includes the unpacking of the printer ). I took out all the pictures that I had and WOW the quality is unheard off. I mean the pictures are just so clear and pure quality. The printer pretty much started on it's own.
Just plug everything and put the disk that came with it and It does everything on it's own. Ohhh and then I tried photo paper.
Ohhh man it just got better from there.

THIS IS THE PRINTER TO GET.!!!!!!!

I just bought this printer & LOVE it! I am very pleased with the quality of pictures it produces. I printed out some family pictures & framed them - my family was in awe that I printed them from my home printer! I love the LCD display & the simplicity of the operation. Highly recommended by me!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's an excellent photo printer for light-average use, December 19, 2004
This review is from: HP PhotoSmart 7760 Photo Printer (Office Product)
First, this is not meant as anything other than a photo printer; it may or not be able to print text and graphics, but that's not it's main function. It's main function is to print high quality photos, which it does well.
The photo quality is certainly very good even at the default settings (the only ones I've used). Outlines are crisp, colors are clear, there's no blurring *unless your photography skills put it in there...*
It's a little slow doing full borderless prints, but so is any home use photo printer. It does 4X6 reasonably fast, although not blindingly so. However, the slightly slow speed is more than offset by the high quality of the prints, particularly in this price range.

It'll let you do basic photo editing, but it really is no match for Photoshop Elements, or any other decent photo suite. It's still a nice touch though, to be able to do at least basic photo maniupulation (zoom in or out, rotate etc.) on the printer.

The ink economy is so-so. There's better out there, but they cost significantly more (add at least another 50-100 dollars) so it's a question of how much you print. Since most people wind up doing predominintly 4X6, it's not really a big deal; thier cartridges last for a good number of those. However, if you print out more than maybe 20-30 4X6 photos and/or 10-15 8X10's a month, I'd reccomend a heavier duty printer. That's a lot more than most people actually print though.

It's also easy to use; I still haven't bothered with the instruction manual and get everything done I want to with it. The navigation menu on the LCD screen is very self explanitory and takes just a couple of minutes to get to know. Also, I've yet to have a malfunction with this machine, which is nice; no jams or anything.
It's a fine printer for a good price, and a great choice for the vast majority of home users looking for a dedicated photo printer. Quality is excellent, speed is acceptable, and ink cost aren't bad; while there are better photo printers out there, they cost a good deal more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great all-purpose printer!, March 19, 2005
By
jeanne425 (REDMOND, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: HP PhotoSmart 7760 Photo Printer (Office Product)
This is an outstanding printer. Aside from doing an excellent job with photos, it also functions extremely well as an all-purpose printer, running the gamut from high-quality photo printing to everyday correspondence and web page printing.

Right after I bought this, my 5-year old laser died, so I started using the 7760 as a temporary all-purpose printer. I was so impressed, I decided against buying another laser printer. The "fast draft mode" provides nice quality for everyday document and web page printing; very sharp for black & white, but just a bit lighter than normal mode, and is far better than draft mode on Epsons. There is also a "Fast Normal" mode that looks near perfect, yet provides some ink savings. Both modes print text and graphics far more quickly than earlier models, narrowing the gap against laser printers dramatically. Like all good-quality photo printers, it runs through ink quickly at the highest photo settings. But for everyday use in "Fast Draft" and "Fast Normal" modes, I'm satisfied with the ink economy.

I have had this printer for 10 months, use nearly everyday, and have never experienced any of the problems noted by other reviewers. I use only with a Dell desktop PC and IBM Thinkpad, so cannot speak to its viability as a standalone photo printer. I love having only one printer, as I never thought that a single printer could run the gamut from high quality photos to economical everyday use---let alone at this price. I've recommended this printer to others time and again, and I'd buy it again in a minute.

UPDATE: Regarding some of the other more recent negative comments: I've had this printer for nearly 2 years now, and my photos have not faded at all. To get these results, its important to use genuine HP ink (and switching out the black #56 cartridge for the Photo #58 cartridge when printing photos) and PREMIUM photo papers. I have used HP Premium, HP Premium Plus, and the premium Kodak photo paper available at Costco; the HP Premium Plus gives slightly better results). Generic ink + cheap paper = bad results. Also, when printing photos, one needs to adjust the print quality settings to "best". Common sense info straight out of the user guide!

12/4/2007 update - this printer is still going strong after almost 4 years! Came here looking for one for a friend. Photo quality is comparable to the Canon MP530 I use at the office. And older model means less expensive ink in larger cartridges that don't run out every month.

10/26/2010 UPDATE - still working flawlessly, came here again looking for a refurb to have as backup whenever this one dies. Never thought it would last this long. Absolutely phenomenal printer, all my printed photos still look good as new with the Premium Plus paper. And this ink cartridge is so large compared to newer ones, a terrific deal. Have it on a print server now and works great with that too. Windows 7 even has updated drivers for it, nice touch by hp in continuing to support a printer introduced in 2003!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent printer - paid $129 at Costco, June 29, 2004

Best photo printer I ever have owned. Easy set-up. Quick printing, great colors, love the little LCD screen that shows the picture as it prints. Reads directly from compact flash card; no computer needed. Ink and paper are expensive, but I'm worth it.

Downside: paper path a little convoluted but no problems. Perfect companion for my Nikon CoolPix 5400 digital camera.

Just bought the printer at Costco for $139.00. What a deal, I just built and setup a new system, and was looking for a decent photo printer. This one is fantastic. Took less then 10 minutes to unpack and install and get completely operational. If you buy at Costco it even comes with the USB cable. I could not believe the quality of the photo I printed on the sample 4x6 photo paper included with the printer. Looks just like it came from the photo processing center. All functions I checked out so far appear to work great, just the fact you can plug a mem card into the printer and do most if not all your editing right there is great. So far, it looks like this one is a keeper..

Received the printer and had it up and running in less than 20 minutes with no problems. Makes beautiful prints that are as good as any professional printing I've had done. The ability to edit at the printer without having to download to the PC first is great! It's very easy to use and I've had no paper jam problems of any sort. Since I am not really technical and don't like to read pages and pages of instructions to use new equipment, I believe this speaks highly of this printers ease of use.

5.0 out of 5 stars 7760 vs 7960 vs i900d, January 21, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: HP PhotoSmart 7760 Photo Printer (Office Product)
I started off with a Canon i900D but returned it because of the quality of photos. The prints were not real sharp and the color was off.

I originally was going to buy the 7960 but since I do not do a lot of B + W and the larger LCD was not a big issue for me I decided to try out the 7760. I just brought it home and set up was a breeze, basically you just plug it in. I did have a question though and call HP technical help, got threw in a matter of minutes, the tech was nice and helpful. I printed a few prints and am impressed by the quality of the photos. It's a nice looking printer and I like the fact it's a little smaller then the 7960. Still too new to tell for the long hull but so far it's a keeper!
