Amazon Product Description

The Basics With its Media Center lineup of PCs, HP seeks to bring the personal computer out from under the home office umbrella and into the mainstream. Sporting handy multimedia-related amenities such as remote controls, memory card readers, front-mounted docks for digital cameras and removable hard drives, top-notch music and video editing software, and facilities for etching CD labels directly on your discs, Media Center PCs are powerful, convenient and very forward-looking. This system, the Media Center m7060n Photosmart Desktop PC, is a midlevel model that's equipped with many of the same amenities as today's top-of-the-line Media Center systems but features a slightly slower processor and a graphics accelerator card that's just fine for most activities but is less than ideal for high-end 3D games. Though serious gamers will need to add a good quality graphics card, all others--particularly anyone who plans to use their PC as the central hub of a home entertainment center--should find plenty to like in the Media Center m7060n.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. The Media Center m7060n is driven by an Intel Pentium 4 630 CPU operating at a clock speed of 3.0 GHz. This is a fine processor running at a reasonably high speed and offering enough oomph for the vast majority of applications on the market. Additionally, it features Intel's Hyper-Threading technology, which essentially allows a single CPU system to behave at key times like a dual CPU system and thus more efficiently handle high-drain procedures such as multitasking. It also features 2 full MB of "Level 2 cache" and an 800 MHz front side bus, both of which are strong features for the power user and multitasker. Nevertheless, this is far from the fastest or most technologically advanced CPU currently being manufactured, and is therefore priced accordingly. Ultimately, unless you're an incredibly demanding user or someone who truly doesn't mind spending quite a bit more money to ensure they won't need to upgrade for the next five years, this CPU is quite satisfactory.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they also keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means added efficiency, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Media Center m7060n brandishes one full GB of fast PC3200 DDR SDRAM main memory, a huge allotment that'll add even more muscle to the most challenging multitasking situations. Moreover, the system will accept later RAM upgrades to a stunning total of 4 GB.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). The Media Center m7060n features a relatively new style of video controller, the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900. It's a hybrid of sorts between high-end standalone cards that incorporate their own built-in memory and less capable integrated controllers that share a portion the system's main memory. Structured much like the latter, the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 indeed shares main memory rather than supplying its own, yet it features more refined components than older integrated controllers and commandeers more of the system's memory--up to 128 MB in this case--than traditional integrated controllers.

Ultimately, this controller is sufficient for all 2D and most 3D tasks (including midlevel 3D games) and is superior to traditional integrated controllers. However, it simply doesn't deliver enough juice for those who want to run the latest and greatest 3D games or 3D animation packages at their full visual potential. Serious gamers and those who deal primarily with 3D animation will likely need to upgrade to a 256 MB or 512 MB video card.

Display:
A display screen is not included, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

Sound
The Media Center m7060n produces sound via an Intel High Definition Audio chipset with support for seven distinct audio channels and one subwoofer.

Hard Drive
This system's 200 GB drive offers oodles of space for a massive allotment of files and applications and a comprehensive music, video/photo and multimedia library too. Furthermore, this particular hard drive is quick--sporting a quick 7200-RPM speed and the faster transfer rates and smaller cables of cutting-edge Serial ATA (SATA) technology. These are comparatively recent innovations, each increasing the overall speed and convenience of the system. Further storage possibilities are offered in the form of a convenient docking slot located on the front of the computer tower that accepts portable hard drives such as the HP Personal Media Drive.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning," so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD).

This system features a state-of-the-art Double Layer DVD+R/RW drive through which you can burn music and data CDs, play DVD movies, and record home videos to long-lasting DVD media. The "Double Layer" designation refers to the unit's ability to handle double layer DVDs, each of which offers nearly double the capacity of traditional DVDs (8.5 GB vs. 4.4 GB). Moreover, the drive also includes HP's new "LightScribe" technology, which allows you to etch permanent labels on your CDs and DVDs, complete with your own text, photos and designs.

Connectivity and Expansion
With no less than six high-speed USB 2.0 ports--two of which are conveniently located on the front of the unit--you'll have plenty of room for plug and play gadgets such as joysticks and printers. HP has also included two IEEE 1394 "FireWire" ports (commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders), composite video and S-Video ports for high-quality digital images, and a versatile 9-in-1 card reader for reading memory cards from devices such as digital cameras, PDAs and more. Communication options include an integrated 10/100Base-T networking interface for fast Internet and network communication and a V.92 data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up connections.

Operating System and Software
The Media Center m7060n features an extremely comprehensive software package headed by Microsoft's beefy, multimedia-friendly Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 operating system. HP will also pre-install Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity suite, two finance packages (Microsoft's Money Standard 2004 and Quicken 2004 New User Edition), and a bevy of photo, music and imaging utilities.

Control
You'll control your PC with an HP multimedia keyboard and wireless mouse. The system also features a handy wireless infrared remote control.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to a desktop, April 9, 2005
This review is from: HP m7060n Media Center Photosmart Desktop PC (Intel Pentium 4 Processor 630 (H-T), 1 GB RAM, 200 GB Hard Drive, LightScribe Dbl Layer DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
Just picked the HP m7060n up today from a local electronics store (sorry amazon) and wanted to check what others thought about it. I have to say that I'm impressed so far, computer comes loaded with tons of features, including a built in TV tuner, hook ups for your cable dvd you name it, built in memory card slots, 2 firewire ports (itunes preloaded) and 6 USB 2.0 two in the front and four in the back. It has a removeable harddrive spot that the sales guy reccomended getting and saving digital pictures to, in case your computer goes, like my laptop just did. Only thing I havent liked so far is having to burn, my own system recovery disks, which was easy on the built in DVD writer, but it took 2 hours!! All in all I think its great, if you can spend a grand and not feel guilty about it, and I don't, its a good purchase. Also the sales guy said not a great computer for gaming, but thats not my thing. take it easy

4.0 out of 5 stars Multi-Media Madness, October 20, 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: HP m7060n Media Center Photosmart Desktop PC (Intel Pentium 4 Processor 630 (H-T), 1 GB RAM, 200 GB Hard Drive, LightScribe Dbl Layer DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I wanted a machine that

1) I could use as a PVR (personal video recorder). A PVR is basically a computer that also does TIVO type stuff without any sort of monthly subscription fee
3) would let me edit TV shows I recorded and make DVDs out of them
4) worked as a personal computer
5) let me easily connect to any of my still or video cameras
6) worked!

What I got was all of the above except a bit of the last. First, this machine does a great job recording and playing back TV shows. When I first started it up, it asked me where I lived and what sort of cable package I had. It then downloaded an accurate channel guide and I was in business. It was that easy! I was really surprised that the drive was fast enough to let me watch a recorded show while it recorded another. The programming feature is very simple point and click. If you see a show you like on the guide, just click on it and select record. There's no more of this date/time/channel crap of the old VCR days.

The software that allows me to make DVDs also allows me to export my TV files into any one of many video formats. I find this feature especially useful because I like to edit video using Adobe Premier, and these two applications share the AVI format.

In addition to Adobe Premier, I also loaded Office 2003. I'm able to do office work, burn DVDs, *and* watch TV (live or recorded) all at the same time. I had a real WOW moment when I found that out!

Note: you will need an Internet connection in order to automatically download updated channel guides. My cable provider also provides my Internet connection, and the "cable guy" had no trouble connecting both the TV cable and the cable modem to my machine.

One other thing I wish this computer could do is let me watch a live program while it records another. It's probably a tuner "feature" that only allows it to see one live show at a time.

I noted above that I wasn't fully satisfied with the "worked!" feature. This machine runs on Microsoft's Media Center (a version of XP). I also have Office 2003 loaded. All my software has the latest service packs and updates. However, my programs lock up daily (especially Outlook), and my machine crashes from time to time. For those familiar with Microsoft-based products, this probably sounds all too familiar. So far, thought, that's been my only disappointment with this product. ~Robert

1.0 out of 5 stars Dead-on arrival HP computer, August 20, 2005
This review is from: HP m7060n Media Center Photosmart Desktop PC (Intel Pentium 4 Processor 630 (H-T), 1 GB RAM, 200 GB Hard Drive, LightScribe Dbl Layer DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I could never get this HP pc to boot even with the "assistance" of HP support. This assistance required over four hours of my time on the telephone. After the first two hours of this assistance HP sent me a recovery cd packet which took three days to arrive in the mail. It did not solve the boot problem. This required another two hours of my telephone time. HP support finally gave up and said it might be a defective hard drive. I also gave up and returned the pc as per your return policy instructions. So much for my experience with HP computers!
