As such, it is very fast for an inkjet.

If you are buying this to do color prints on photo paper you will most likely be disappointed.

I finally was able to do it, but only by putting the paper in the optional tray #3.

I have had the X551 for several months now. I have probably made something like 100,000 prints. This is a very nice printer. It is one of the fastest printers you can buy. I found for instance that when printing on legal-size paper in the duplex mode, I could print about 32 pages (16 sheets of paper - both sides) in 65 seconds. It's even faster with letter-size paper (see below). Your speeds will vary depending on a number of factors. This printer is also very reliable. So far, I've only had one minor paper feed problem. I love the way the paper comes out flat, rather than curled. My laser printer curls the paper. The machine is also relatively quiet, though it does make noise. You might prefer it not be running near you while you are on the phone for instance. It has a low operating cost. My estimated ink costs per page are as low as .0143 per page, though your cost may differ for a variety of reasons. Almost all of my printing has been with black ink only. If you routinely use color ink, your ink costs could be significantly higher.

My biggest complaint is that it does not have built-in capacity for legal-size paper. If you only do a few sheets of legal paper every now and then you can use the bypass tray. But for serious printing on legal, you will have to buy a separate tray for legal paper, and that will cost you more than some inexpensive printers. My second biggest complaint is that while it is possible to print documents directly from a thumb-drive plugged directly into the printer (this is often the speediest way to print), you don't have as much control over the printing when printing from a thumb drive. I am also annoyed that when you save the print settings for re-use, some settings seem not to be saved and will need to be reset manually for each print job.

This is an excellent printer. Very fast, at 70 ppm in draft (or office) mode. Very good color quality when used in normal mode and excellent color quality in professional mode. Of course, I use only paper rated color lock which is the one I would recommend for any inkjet printer. If the printer is "sleeping" it takes 10 seconds to print the first page, but after it "awakens" it is extremely fast. No issue with the printer up to now. I use a combination of Apple iMacs running OSX and iMacs running Windows 7 in my network, and the printer works perfectly well. I recommend it for office use (big or small office). Network performance is excellent and it has administrative features that help to save ink and paper, as well as access to the printer. For home use I would recommend the HP Laserjet Pro 8600 Plus e due to its higher quality when printing photos. If you have a home office and do consulting jobs which require excellent quality, large volume and speed, like I do, the X551dw is the best choice. In fact, I own both printers, using the 8600 for photos. Both printers highly recommended.

This printer has a serious design flaw that even HP eventually admitted to when trying to get support for it. We actually sent the first one back because HP support played dumb and said it was a defect in our specific printer. Well the replacement has the same problem. For normally everyday business printing this printer would probably work great, but if you are purchasing it to do full color prints, do not bother. The printer quality was good enough for we needed it for, BUT on to the design flaw:

Unlike most inkjet printers this printer actually has rollers after the ink is applied to the paper. Similar to a laser. The problem with this is that unlike the toner in a laser, ink actually takes time to dry. So if you are using this with like a premium matte photo paper the ink does not dry fast enough before it hits the rollers and it leaves an obvious roller marks across the page. There is a DRY TIME setting that attempts to slow down the printing process to allow more time for the ink to dry before hitting the rollers. This setting did help, but even set to max dry time it was not enough to allow the ink to dry.

I love the idea of this printer, but this first generation has flaws. Maybe in a few more generations these bugs will be worked out. If you are buying this to do color prints on photo paper you will most likely be disappointed.

This is a remarkable printer and major advance in technology for HP. They truly crossed a threshold with this new page printing technology.

In early December 2013 we began planning a Christmas event at our retail furniture store. We arranged a photographic set and made arrangements with Mr. and Mrs. Santa. We also brought up from the south pole Santa's brother who sings and dances. We scheduled 8 hours on the Saturday and Sunday before Christmas for families to bring their kids, meet up with the Claus family and walk away with an 8x10 glossy laminated photo. The backroom part of the project was how do we shoot, organize, proof, print, laminate, and provide finished prints within minutes of our guests visiting Santa.

Initially we hoped our laser printers might do the job. While they are great for office projects they could not produce the needed photo quality. After reading another reviewers comment about the X551 and unimpressive photo quality I was a bit scared. I decided to give the X551 a chance and follow HP's suggested Advanced Glossy Photo Paper. I was greatly re-leaved after seeing the results. The photo results were excellent. I believe the other reviewer either did not use the correct paper or did not pay attention to selecting the correct photo setup options. The prints from the X551 easily compared to those out of our $1,000 professional photo inkjet color printer which took 3 minutes to print the same photo. The X551 produced 8x10 "photo quality" prints in less than 30 seconds. The images were sharp and the colors vivid.

So, eighteen hundred 8x10 photos were put through the X551 that weekend. It churned them out without hesitation and at what I would label as, "photo quality".
