These are great switches and just as fast as the compitition with ONE exception.. THEY DONT BREAK!
I've used them all and the major complaint I have with most home switches is the HEAT they generate. You can put money down that Your Cisco Linksys or DLINK switch is going to last about a year. They do give you a warranty and an easy replacement but I would rather buy a switch that I didnt need to exorcise the return policy every 1-2 years thank you very much. The ProCurve Switches use external brick type power supplies that keep the heat away from your switch processor. This May be an issue for Business applications that use rack mounting, but for home use ProCurve hits a Home Run!

I have this switch in the basement of my house, connecting the ethernet network for the home. It has a great build quality, is compact without sacrificing anything, and stays very cool. Plus the lifetime warranty can't be beat!

Replaced a malfunctioning Netgear with this Procurve. I have FIOS (30Meg down) and the poor little Netgear just couldn't handle it. Overheated and rebooted regularly. The Procurve runs cool and it's been flawless since installation (months ago). Highly recommended.

Corporate level switch for home,
This review is from: HP ProCurve Switch 1400-8G 8-Port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Network Switch (Personal Computers)
To keep it short, after trying a number of networking devices. I consider this HP 1400-8G + D-Link DGL-4100 as the ultimate affordable solution with excellent performance. To get better performance than this router switch combo, you are going to have to shell out alot more money.
Pros 1.) Doing internal measurement, even 100Mbps beat out other 100Mbps switches in my house from Netgear and Trendnet by a relatively good margin. 2.) It mixes 100Mbps and 1000Mbps very well. You can plug & unplug and swap at will. I swear some of the other switches loses performance after mixing 100Mbps with gigabit. This one has no issues. Cons 1.) The traffic lights do not flash bit by bit like those older Netgear. Those were more fun to watch.

Pros:
- Feels solid and looks sturdy - Just plug network cables in and then power into wall and you're ready to go - I like the LED's telling me which lines are connected and which are gigabit speeds - It's been running a month and have not had to reboot Cons: - None so far

I'm not a techie so it was easy for this product to meet my expectations. I took it out of the box and plugged it in, attached my network and voila! it worked. Has been running a few months now without any hitches.

Switch works fine, no fuss. I only have two computers capable of gigabit, but transfers between them approach disk speeds, so the backplane on this unit doesn't seem to be a problem with two computers gigabit machines. Not a great test, but hey that's what I have.
Build quality is great, came with lots of documentation, seems of much higher quality than Linksys or Negear, and a lifetime warranty!

This is not your ordinary off the shelf plastic gigabit switch...it is an enterprise grade product and built solid. The look/feel of the switch are top grade the minute you take it out of the box. The casing is all metal and feels durable...not like plastic switches which you fear will crack if dropped by accident or put under pressure. The metal also helps heat to dissipate better and thus I recommend it highly.
While the switch is not inexpensive, I can guarantee that it will bring with it a long long life and backing from HP. I have been using these in our offices for years and this is our 5th one to add on to the other 4 that are still humming along. Excellent switch, great quality, professional look/feel. 5/5

I was told that high volume through cheaper switches can cause overheating and erratic performance, so I looked for a better quality switch and found the HP ProCurve to be both highly recommended and carries a lifetime warranty. I replaced the switch in our office system that affected my computer and after several months of use I and the others using it have ceased to have issues.
Slow speeds and hangs were a frustration at one of our point of purchase terminals, so I recently replaced the switch that affected that terminal with a ProCurve and everything now runs as it should. I'm no IT pro, but these seem to have cured some of our IT guy's "software problems."

Reliable Gigbit switch,

I've used several different brands of switches, routers, hubs, etc. Reliability is the most important requirement and recycling power on a daily routine was not optional. The HP Procurve is extremely reliable not requiring a single reboot in the two months that it has been online. There is no degradation of performance at all. As a bonus, Amazon has free standard shipping which is great.
Pros: Very efficient. I noticed improved network switching vice using the built-in one on my Linksys router after switching all connections over to the HP. I didn't even use jumbo frames. Cons: The switch is sensitive to physical cable when negotiating for speed. I had to physically switch the cable and program in 1000 or 100 full duplex on the devices to ensure linked speed and duplex operation. I am still unable to get 100 full duplex on some cables that are using CAT 5. For gig, CAT 5e only as negotiations will not complete. |
