Initially, I was impressed with the SimpleSave, and bought it based on the number of positive reviews. The software is pre-installed on the unit, and backups and restores are a no-brainer. It worked very well for almost two weeks. Maybe I got a lemon, but shortly after completing a backup one morning, the unit lost power and wouldn't turn back on, and with it went years of irreplaceable digital family photos that I had transferred to the drive to save space on my computer (I know, I know, I should have also backed the photos up to CD). I tried unsuccessfully to find a place to get the unit repaired. Finally, I contacted HP Support, only to be told they don't repair their drives, but can only replace them. To send the drive to a data recovery service would have ended up costing me about three times what I paid for the drive. So, I sent it to HP and they are sending me a new unit. Hopefully, this one will be more reliable, but I can't replace the data that I've lost.

****UPDATE 3/29/2012
I was looking over my old reviews and saw this one where I gave the Simple Save a bad rap. To be fair, HP promptly sent me a replacement drive and I have been using it for over 2 years now without a problem, so I've upped my rating from 2 stars to 5.

If I were to list all the features that I wanted in a file backup system, they would all be included in the hardware and software associated with the HP SimpleSave 1.5 TB unit. For years I backed up my most important documents on disks - that is, when the thought crossed my mind. As the size of my archives increased, I started using the hp personal media drive (PMD) with 300 GB of storage. That saved my you-know-what big time when the hard drive on my z555 failed and needed to be replaced. But whenever I backed up with the PMD, error messages would occur that needed to be dealt with manually. Nothing like starting a four or five hour backup and returning later to find an error message waiting instead of having your files backed up. That meant baby sitting the backup. What a pain in the you-know-what. With my PMD no longer capable of holding my archived files in one location, I needed something with larger storage capacity, and hopefully operating a lot more robustly. HP provided me a solution in the SimpleSave 1.5 TB unit. Not only can I keep all my archived documents in one place (for easy access), but the software that comes with the unit flags errors when it encounters them during backup, and then keeps right on going - creating a summary document of the job when completed, and including a nice description of the flagged errors. But the best is yet to come: keep the drive active on your system and it automatically backs up your new work as you create it - just leave your system idle for five minutes or more. Now that's smart. The software also provides a great deal of flexibility in choosing which file types to back up. AND - if you attach your other external storage media to your computer during backup, the unit will grab the files on those as well (an option). Now that's convenient.Read more ›

This product only backs up files with extensions that are in the default list or that have been added manually.
Most PC users will have hundreds of files with extensions that are not on the default list.
ESRI GIS platforms for instance, require extensions such as:
.shx, .prj, .inf, .sbx,.sbn, .mdb, .mxd, .accdb, .grd,.e00 etc.
Without backing up all the files with all the extensions, a GIS project backup is useless.
Even very common extensions such as .tab would have to be added to the list by hand.
Since there is no way I know of to make a list of all your extensions and since editing the SimpleSave software application file Categories.dat (that contains the default extensions), one is unable to ensure that ALL the files needed will be there if there is a problem requiring file restore. Is that not the whole point of data backup?
Until HP finds a way to allow the inclusion of ALL files (they prohibit adding *.* or some other wildcard flag), this product cannot serve as a real backup.

I have had very mediocre results with external drives from WD and Seagate but this drive has blown me away. It's super quiet, works really well, and looks very nice. The blue light is a bit bright but it's not annoying. I use it with a Mac and the (also wonderful) Xtreamer media player and it's flawless. I haven't used the bundled software. I now own 3 of these drives and am about to order a fourth one.

i use this attached to a netgear wndr3700 for network attached storage. it is truly plug and play. this unit has a small footprint, has done everything from backing up the 4 computers on the network to streaming movies. the only way you know its on is the blue light on the front. only time will tell as to longevity but after a month it has been money well spent.

It works like a charm; you plug it in and leave it alone. One reviewer said it did not back up Thunderbird email files and that's not true, it found everything I wanted backed up including emails and did it quickly and quietly without interfering with what I was doing. When I accessed the drive, it came up quickly, transferred fast and didn't make any noise. I do agree that the flashing blue light on the front can get a bit annoying but simply turning the unit does the trick. If it lasts, it will be perfect!
