Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Work faster and more productively with the special edition HP L2105NR notebook PC. You'll also be helping to benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF). With your purchase, $50 from each HP L2105NR notebook goes to the LAF. The LAF provides the practical tools and information that people living with cancer need to live strong. Jointly developed by HP and processor manufacturer AMD, the L2105NR features the LIVESTRONG message on the cover and a reproduction of Lance Armstrong's autograph. Each purchase includes a yellow LIVESTRONG wristband and yellow stereo ear bud headphones with in-line volume control. LIVESTRONG wristbands represent unity in the battle against cancer and hope for all those who are living with cancer.

The HP L2105NR features the AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology ML-32, which will handle all you can throw at it today and will be ready for the coming onslaught of applications that will take advantage of 64-bit processing technology tomorrow. Supremely mobile, it weighs just over 5 pounds and has a BrightView 14-inch display--which provides improved viewing in direct sunlight. Other features include an 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), dual-layer, multiformat DVD writer, built-in 54g wireless connectivity with 125HSM SpeedBooster, 128 MB of shared video RAM, and Windows XP Professional.

In addition to the $50 that the LAF will receive from each notebook, AMD and HP plan to donate notebooks for use in LAF-funded cancer survivorship centers throughout the United States. The two companies are inviting you to join them in the support of the Lance Armstrong Foundation by matching or exceeding the $50 per unit for the LAF.

AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology
Combining strong performance with efficient usage of power, AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology ML-32 is uniquely optimized to power today's thinnest notebooks. It's also built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. It includes such AMD technology features as HyperTransport (which increases the communication between integrated circuits), PowerNow! (which enables longer battery life and reduced heat generation), and Enhanced Virus Protection (which works with Windows XP Service Pack 2 to better withstand attacks from certain classes of viruses). It also features a 512 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) is a bit above average in size for notebook PCs, and its capacity is a welcome size for road warriors.
  • Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (2 x 256 MB, PC2700, DDR SDRAM) is a good start for power users. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 2 GB (2 x 1024 MB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the L2105NR multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer DVD+R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. You can also burn your favorite music mixes to CD.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad.

Screen, Graphics and Sound
While the L2105NR's screen is actually as wide as standard 15-inch displays, the high-definition, widescreen 14-inch display (1280 x 768-pixel resolution) has the same form factor as a 12-inch screen--taking up less space on your desk. Even more impressive, its high resolution provides 25% more information than standard 15-inch XGA displays. This BrightView screen also provides a 20 percent brighter screen for better definition and 33 percent wider viewing angle for more accurate, off-center viewing. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200M IGP video/graphics card, which delivers good, though not high-end, 3D graphics. It has 128 MB of shared video RAM, which uses the notebook's main memory. It also features 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro-compatible audio and internal speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The L2105NR has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. The 125 HSM/SpeedBooster support will enable it to be ready for tomorrow's 125 Mbps wireless LANs and the BroadRange support provides your 802.11g connection up to 50 percent more range than competing technologies. You get a decent offering of connectivity options, which does include super-fast USB 2.0 and Firewire:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
  • 1 Expansion Port 2 connector
  • 6-in-1 Digital Media Reader for Secure Digital cards, MultiMedia cards, Memory Sticks,
  • Memory Stick Pro, SmartMedia, and XD Picture Cards
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. Other preloaded software includes Sonic Digital Media Studio, InterVideo WinDVD Player, Microsoft Zones.com, Apple iTunes and Apple iTunes Music Store, Adobe PhotoShop Album, Muvee AutoProducer DVD Edition with Burning, Microsoft Works, Microsoft Money, Microsoft MSN Encarta Plus, and Microsoft Office 2003 Student and Teacher Edition (60 day trial version).

Dimensions and Weight
Nice and light, this notebook weighs just 5.33 pounds and measures 13.15 x 9.1 x 1.29 inches.

Power
It's powered by a 6-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which has a battery life of up to 3 hours (depending on usage).

What's in the Box
This package contains the L2105NR notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, printed operating instructions, zippered bag, yellow earbud headphones, and yellow LIVESTRONG wristband. LIVESTRONG wristbands represent unity in the battle against cancer and hope for all those who are living with cancer. The notebook is backed by a one-year limited hardware warranty, 1-year free technical support, and 30-day free software support.

LIVESTRONG is a trademark of the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Notebook, January 25, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP Special Edition L2105NR 14" Laptop (AMD Turion 64 Processor ML-32, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-R/RW and CD-RW Combo Drive) (Personal Computers)
This is an excellent notebook. The screen is bright and clear. The CPU is fast and compatible with VISTA 64 bit when it becomes available.

For those who complain about this notebook running on the warm, there is a quick and easy solution. This notebook can easily be run at lower voltage without stability issue. Just download a program calle RMCLOCK. I am able to run at full clock speed of 1.8GHz while dropping the core voltage from 1.35v to 1.175v (havn't tried lower voltage yet but most likely can go lower.) It barely warms up even while running PRIM95 at 100% CPU.

This HP Turion is the best notebook I have owned.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Notebook for the Price, January 10, 2006
This review is from: HP Special Edition L2105NR 14" Laptop (AMD Turion 64 Processor ML-32, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-R/RW and CD-RW Combo Drive) (Personal Computers)
You will not regret purchasing this notebook from HP. The display is very sharp (movies look great on it, especially those in widescreen format). It is easily upgraded as well, as there is easy access to the RAM, HDD, and Wi-Fi card. Even the DVD drive can be upgraded by removing a single screw, although this is pointless unless you want to install one of the new lightscribe drives as I have done. The bezels on notebook disc drives are interchangeable, so any replacement drive you install will still look factory. The final upgrade point I would like to make is that the processor can be upgraded! I took a Turion ML-40 (2.2gHz 1MB L2 cache) and put it in this notebook in place of the factory installed ML-32. If this is a thought anyone else is having, I just wanted to confirm for you that it CAN be done. That upgrade made this very good notebook a GREAT notebook.

One important note: at one point in the description it is stated that "XP Professional" is included. This is not so as the system has XP Home installed. Another important point to make is that the amount of system RAM will show up as 384MB as the "Radeon shared video memory" actually takes over 128MB of the 512MB on the system. You will probably want to upgrade the amount of RAM as a result.

The only flaw I have found with this notebook is that the plastic is a bit flimsier than I would have liked, however it will stand up to the amount of abuse I will throw at it. If you require a really solid notebook then you might wish to look at other systems, as this one is designed to be lightweight and this impacted the type of plastic used. Overall four out of five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ahmad Mumtaz's review is nonsense..., January 11, 2006
This review is from: HP Special Edition L2105NR 14" Laptop (AMD Turion 64 Processor ML-32, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-R/RW and CD-RW Combo Drive) (Personal Computers)
Ahmad Mumtaz's review of this AMD HP noterbook is completely false. He makes several statements that are completely untrue.

"First of all, if you are into home computing like surfing the web, chatting, emailing and using office type software then this is not a recommended machine. Why? Well, for starters it is a 64bit AMD machine with a 14" screen. For the same price (or thereabouts) you can get an Intel with 15.4" screen with similar performance."

FALSE. In general, AMD laptops are cheaper than Intel laptops in equivalent models and performance specifications. This item is a Special Edition laptop and some of the money is donated to the Lance Armstrong Foundation which is why it costs more. If you compare laptops that are not special edition, AMD Turion64 will be less than the equivalent Intel Pentium M/Centrino.

"Well, for the home user it means half the battery life of an equivalent Intel machine. that is you will run out of juice within 1 and half hour and will be forced to plug it in."

FALSE again. I have an article comparing the Turion64 and the Centrino in benchmark tests and battery life tests (http://www.laptoplogic.com/resources/detail.php?id=17&PHPSESSID=919641a04b956510a20751d3fd2d03a3). If you read the article and get to the updated BatteryMark2004 tests, you will see that Intel's Pentium M (Codename Dothan) only beats the Turion by 3 minutes under consistent load battery life. Then if you look at realistic load, which simulates loads with several periods of idle (which is how most laptops are used) you can see that the Turion actually gets 20 minutes more of battery life.

"Unless, you are planning on running linux. That is the only operating system (and its various flavors- solaris etc) that is available in pure 64bit and therefore can exploit the power of this computer to its maximum."

False. Windows XP x64 is an operating system that functions in 64 bit mode and utilizes every aspect of the extended instruction set of AMD64. When running Windows XP x64, you can run 32bit programs as well. One more thing, Solaris is based on Unix and is not a "flavor" of Linux.

I don't mean to offend the writer of this review, but to me it seems like he has written unjustified claims and it could mislead a consumer to believe something false as common knowledge.
