5.0 out of 5 stars Best Computer I've ever Owned!, October 4, 2009
This review is from: HP TouchSmart IQ846 Desktop PC (Personal Computers)
I had an HP Pavillion which was, to put it simply, a complete disaster. I swore I'd never buy am HP ever again. In checking out replacements, I looked into some All-In-One's like this one. After careful research (and some trepedation), I decided on this one.

I use the PC as a media server and bedroom TV and it excells at both. As a media server, I get flawless performance streaming music, photos, and video to my DVR's in the living room (DirecTV HR20 and HR21). As an added bonus, however, unlike the similarly outfitted Pavillion, this computer runs DirecTV2PC flawlessly. That means HD Video in my bedroom from my living room DVRs. The DVD/BD player is great, and I love the discrete slot loading mechinism behind the screen. Also, one cable (power) coming from the back beats the usual rats nest of cables around most PCs!

The PC's preformance is lightning quick and I can use Vista as soon as it boots up (no more waiting 10 minutes after boot-up before I can do anything!).

The touchscreen is very responsive and hyper accurate. The HP Touchsmart software is great, but I can use Vista without a mouse with this as well. I can even launch from the quick launch bar with my finger!

The screen is big, bright, and really pretty to look at. The ambient light for the keyboard is customizable and really pretty.

All in all, for TV, media, games, and even some work, this is the best computer out there and well worth the money!

P.S. At 54 pounds, Amazon still delivered for free!!!

All I can say is that I liked it so much that I purchased another one for my wife. Had a slight problem with the power adapter but HP took care of it without any hassles. My hat goes off to HP for a great job on customer service and also a wonderful product.

I own the IQ 816 with blu-ray. Upgraded to Windows 7 Professional. I was required to reformat the drive. HP was unwilling to provide a replacement copy of Touchsmart or DVD Corel which is the blu-ray driver and more. I was told by HP tech that this computer was designed for Vista and not Windows 7. I could restore Vista or do without this software and Windows 7. You might be able to upgrade to Windows 7 Home edition. I wanted the ability to run XP software regardless of this computers potential loss of touchscreen abilities in XP mode. So if you need to reformat your hard drive to get to Windows 7 don't expect much assistance from HP or replacement software. This is a Vista PC and only a Vista PC regardless. I currently own six HP computers and am disappointed only with the poor support by HP for these touchscreens. It still is better than the IQ 775 which is the same as a PC jr, junk.

5.0 out of 5 stars HP TouchSmart - Great Media PC, February 1, 2010

This review is from: HP TouchSmart IQ846 Desktop PC (Personal Computers)
I love this PC. I first test drove it in BestBuy, but they did not have the 25.5" (Model# IQ846) screen in stock. This machine is great for media like video, webcam and music. The PC is user-friendly and the screen is stunning. Just so you know, the machine is heavy and you should back up your harddrive as the technology is new and can be quirky. Great for a family room.

I have had the pleasure of this fine machine now for a month, and I must say I'am glad I went ahead and spent the additional money and would highly recommend you doing the same. Also I'am very happy that I was patient enough to research all of the posibilities, because I saved 400 Dollars when I purchased this from Amazon .com. Ed Kirk

5.0 out of 5 stars Best computer out there, November 23, 2010
By
This review is from: HP TouchSmart IQ846 Desktop PC (Personal Computers)
I actually bought one of these is December of 2008, about the time they came out, and it's been running great for me since then. I was moving out from college, and wanted to upgrade my 7 year old Sony Vaio desktop (which was amazing). I also didn't want to have to buy a TV. So I started looking at the all-in-one designs, and quickly settled on this. I now use it as a potent gaming computer, as well as running as a TV in the bedroom. It's awesome how little cord clutter there is; just a single power cord. And with bluetooth, there's very little reason to ever need more wires. The keyboard is super slim and very nice. In fact, my keyboard stopped working about a week ago, and I made a run to Best Buy for a replacement. After looking at their selection for about 30 minutes, I ended up buying the same one again. The mouse is also very small and sleek, and the batteries on both of them last forever. The screen itself is probably one of the best screens I've seen, on any device. Full HD, in extremely vibrant colors. Great with the included Blue-ray slot drive, which I was happy to see rather than a tray drive. The remote is the cherry on top, giving you the full functionality of a media center from anywhere in the room. This is the kind of computer I can see myself keeping around for a long time.

The touchscreen aspect of the computer, although truly awesome and kind of fun to play with sometimes, is not something I actually finding myself using, even though I thought I would. A big reason for this is simply the angle that this computer sits at causes it to be somewhat impractical to do much besides random pokes at the screen, which is about as much as I've ever done. I'd love to be able to use the on-screen keyboard, but the angle just isn't right. I have also since cleared off most of the HP programs that came with this computer, and upgraded it to Windows 7. As much as I love this computer, I admit that this was a particular hassle. HP has very little to no support for upgrading to 7, and once it's done there aren't many of the HP programs that will work again. But, since I had gotten rid of most of them anyway, I wasn't terribly concerned (I didn't buy this for the software, after all). In fact, the only complaints I could even come up with if I tried relate to software, which can easily be replaced or upgraded. The design and build of this computer, however, leaves me feeling confident that there isn't a better design computer on the market today.

2.0 out of 5 stars Beware of bad harddrives, March 7, 2010
This review is from: HP TouchSmart IQ846 Desktop PC (Personal Computers)
We bought this system last year, and while we like the clean lines and absence of the PC tower, the computer would lock up frequently, then one day the hard drive crashed. Very frustrating, as we had previously owned 2 Dells, back to back for the past 12 years with no problems.

Our IT department at work had also purchased one last year and the hard drive crashed within a week of purchase.

So beware - when it runs, it runs great. Otherwise, its a headache...

When will HP put a VESA mount on one of these things?

They keep making the stupid assumption that everyone wants a machine on their table/desktop leaning at the annoying angle that this thing sits at.

Not something you want if you install software other than what comes on it - Not a lot of 32bit software that will run consistently on this thing.
Most of it runs slow, crashes or won't load at all.

Keep looking - - - maybe HP will get it right eventually.
