This book has two features in its title, a study guide and a reference book. Unlike many study guides, this is not a cram-for-the-test book it actually tries to keep its focus on learning the HP-UX operating system and providing tips for day to day system administration tasks to make it useful for real-life problem solving. Still the book does point out several points about the exam, how to take it and what to expect.

The book is organized into three sections. The first is an overview of the Unix system. And quite an overview it is, almost 300 of the books 1031 pages. While this could serve as an introduction to the Unix system in general, there are points where the book is specific to HP-UX. The second section is more specific and oriented to HP-UX administration, which is tied to things like installation that are a bit unique. Finally the last section of the book, about another 300 pages is on Network Administration the HP-UX way.

This book is published by Prentice Hall, but the copyright is by Hewlett-Packard Development Company, this is an official book.

The first level is the HP-UX Certified System Administrator (CSA.)

This is a new version, "HP-UX CSA : Official Study Guide and Reference (2nd Edition,)" with 1072 pages of material for concepts from 2004 by Rafeeq Ur Rehman, August 25, 2004.

The "first version" book, "HP Certified: HP-UX System Administration," with 832 pages of material for concepts from 2000 by Rafeeq Rehman May 31, 2000. This book, still holds its value as shows in the pricing.

The next level is the HP-UX Certified System Engineer (CSE.)

There's a HP-UX CSE book, "HP-UX CSE : Official Study Guide and Desk Reference," with 1704 pages of material for concepts from 2004 by Charles Keenan, September 10, 2004.

If a deeper understanding of HP-UX is required, then I strongly suggest the "HP-UX 11i Internals," with 432 pages of material for concepts from 2004 by Chris Cooper, January 22, 2004.

After 3 weeks of study I passed my exam this morning (01/19/2006) using this book and 2 other books written by Marty Poniatowski. This study guide is good but you will not find every thing you need for the exam in this book. I would like to point out too that this book has numerous errors ranging from mispellings to inconsistancies. But these do not make the book unusable. Once you discover these errors you should be fine.

The exam requires more material than this study guide. In my judgement this book alone is well-suited for someone who has much experience with HP-UX system. The level of difficulty of the exam is pretty decent. The exam comes easy if you study well and understand the material and the exam objectives.

Concerning the errors in the book, I have sent a message to the author about it and he promissed to look into it and get back to me. I have never heard from him again. While surfing on the web I ran into an HP.COM website that discussed the errors. The error happen to be in the first edition of the book. The same error is repeated in the second edition of the book.

On another note I also bought from the author a practice exam for $20, which was a REAL JOKE. The practice exam is full of mispellings and errors in addition to that, the questions are not even challenging and are poorly worded. Basically the practice exam is not recommended since it would not help you. The questions in the book are far better.

Overall I recommend the book but you also need other materials to pass the test.
