the flat, glass-like surface is highly reflective. i think it's best to have a subdued light area to work in; daylight from windows behind particularly bad.

image quality is beautiful

2.0 out of 5 stars Eyestrain and Headaches Galore!!!!!!
This monitor has the crispest text I have ever seen. On the other hand the reflections and glare of the highly polished screen is extremely annoying. I can see the benefits if you're going to be using this monitor to watch movies and gaming. However, if u plan on using this just to serf the net like me u better get yourself some shades. This widescreen format is a waste...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little monitor, July 9, 2008

I do a ton of text work and this HP monitor is like getting a new pair of glasses -- amazing. And the 17-inch wide-screen is plenty large. Speakers aren't much, but I didn't expect them to be. Thanks to the monitor's small foot print (about 1/10th that of my old CRT), I have reclaimed my desk-top area. Ah, all that space!

Good monitor for the price. Easy to use controls. Great for word documents but just ok for pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars love my monitor, September 30, 2008
This review is from: HP W1707 17-inch LCD Monitor (Personal Computers)
I love this monitor! My previous monitor was a big bulky monitor that took up all my desk area. This monitor takes up hardly any area plus it is so light weight! It is also an HP. In my opinion, you cannot beat HP for anything! They have outstanding products & Customer Service that no one can beat!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful, March 3, 2009

I have had absolutely no problems whatsoever with this unit. The picture is bright and clear. I especially like the feature in which you can select different display settings based on what you will be viewing, instead of manually changing contrast and all that good stuff. Some of the preset modes include:
Movie
Photo
Gaming
Text

The text mode seems to be the most accurate in terms of color, but I have tested the different modes and they all complement what you're viewing perfectly.

The built-in speakers definitely should not be used as your primary mode of audio output, but they work fine, just a bit tinny.

The glossy coating on the screen gives everything a sharper appearance. That is perhaps the best part of this product; in fact, when I was looking around, I specifically looked for the glossy coating.

As far as input options go, it has a VGA input and a DVI input. You can quickly switch between the two.

If your computer was previously running a traditional square monitor, you will need to install the widescreen driver in order to make the aspect ratio correct (this monitor operates on a 16:9 ratio) The installation disk is included, and is easy to install.

As far as style, I would have to say it tops everyone else. Very cool looking.

All in all this has been a fantastic monitor, and suits my needs just fine. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. You can't go wrong with HP.

This was purchased for the business computer. Excellent price for a 17 inch flat screen monitor with built in speakers. No compromise on graphics either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love my monitor, January 7, 2010

I really like this monitor. I have had it over a year with no problems. There are only two little issues I had, neither with the quality of the monitor - first, when it was shipped, I somehow thought it would be in a plain box, but it was shipped in its original box, meaning there was a obvious monitor box sitting on my front porch for everyone to see. I am glad it didn't get swiped! The other issue is - be aware that the screen will look very different if you hit menu, quickview, then movie or gaming options -- instead of text. Somehow this got changed on my computer (my son!) and it took me a long time to figure out why the screen and text looked so off! Just something to be aware of. Overall, great product one year in!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I had hoped for., April 11, 2009

This monitor took a bit of figuring to get the setting right, but once I did I couldn't be more delighted. I personally did not have any trouble with glare or reflections. I would suggest that if this is a problem, you might consider turning off lamp behind you that are facing the screen. I bought this monitor most of all for its widescreen configuration. I have a hard time with the boxy types which make reading the texts or looking at images somewhat claustraphobic. This monitor is smaller than my previous monitor if you just measure by square inches, but it feels twice as big and takes up much less space. The speakers are nothing to shout about, but I didn't buy this for gaming or watching movies. I have some speakers I could add on, but this monitor meets all of my needs just as it is and a fair price.
