I bought this product so that I could move my computer out of the main computer room and simplify cabling. I am debating whether I will return it or not. This thing would be great if all you want to do is stream 1080P (1920x1080) multimedia content to a remote TV. The setup was not difficult. It links up easily once your cabling is correct. Virtually no video lag, and the screen updates great playing computer games.
I have two complaints about this system:
1) Minor - It *does not* support my TV's native resolution of 1920x1200, so I have some black border and I lose some resolution for my games (I tend to try and get as much up as possible...so it is a bit of an inconvenience). 1920x1200 is supported even in the HDMI v1.0 spec, so I was a bit surprised it was not supported.
2) Major - This is NOT like having an HDMI cable straight from your video card to your monitor. The visual quality was awesome using a cable...pixel perfect. Using this device, the text is fuzzy (esp red text...incredibly difficult to read). In the area where your cursor is (for example), it takes about a second to "focus". That is about the best term I could use, when you first put your cursor over a web page tab in Firefox and the tab changes color, it looks like there are jpeg artifacts for about one second until it locks and looks ok. Even after the "color lock", though, it is still not as crisp as an HDMI cable. This fuzziness also affects your colors. If you look at a black screen, it is more like dark gray with jittery static in it. It is much less noticeable if you're doing black text on a white background. Even looking at my Firefox tabs right now with nothing going on, I see some jittery artifacts around the text on the tabs.
To do some troubleshooting, I used a 10' HDMI cable that I had been using before that was crystal clear on this TV/monitor and a 10' USB extension cord. I extended the TV transmitter from the room with the computer as close as I could to the receiver at the TV. It was no more than seven feet with line of sight. There was no difference in quality. The only other 5.8ghz devices in my house are my DECT compliant phone and I do not see a decrease in quality when the phone rings, so I do not *believe* I'm experiencing any interference issue (esp since both devices are supposed to check the channel they use before using it and actively avoid interference with other wireless devices on the 5.8ghz range).
The documentation is poor with no mention who/where to call if you have problems. HP's site does not have the product listed for their live chat option. I have contacted their email support, and we will see if there's possibly a firmware update or something you can do with the buttons to change channels (upadte: I never received an answer from Tech Support).
I would recommend this product if you are just watching multimedia content (video snobs might not like the video quality reduction). This is not an acceptable replacement for me to use my computer on. I just lose too much pixel clarity to read small text. Maybe I just expected too much from the product. All the reviews made it sound like it was just like having a cable connected. Either I am missing something here, or those statements are not true.
PROs - Links easily once connected correctly, audio quality from my computer via HDMI is great, the whole picture is pretty lag free, doesn't require line of sight
CONs - Doesn't support 1920x1200, artifacts around changing areas of the screen (I am surprised this doesn't affect the whole picture more, but seems fine), text fuzziness, small amount of pixel jittering, true black not true.
Edit: Nothing like reading over your review and seeing typos...fixing.
