HP WI-FI Mobile Mouse

From the Manufacturer

Introducing the HP Wi-Fi® Mobile Mouse, which lets you click and scroll without wires or a USB adapter. This wireless mouse connects easily to computers with a Genuine Windows® 7 operating system and built-in Wi-Fi. With one-time pairing, start using this mouse quickly. The laser sensor works on most surfaces and you can create application shortcuts using five programmable buttons.

Clicking and scrolling with total freedom. The HP Wi-Fi Mobile Mouse works without a USB adapter, so you can free up your computer’s USB ports for other devices. You can also use the convenient 4-way tilt smooth scroll wheel to navigate up, down, left and right quickly. Plus, save battery power with sleep mode and the on/off button. I was really excited about the prospect of a WiFi mouse due to my entry-level Lenovo G530 having no built-in BlueTooth. One USB port was used up by the a Belkin Mini USB Bluetooth Adapter, and the other by the proprietary adapter used by Logitech's M505 mouse (which is otherwise a great wireless mouse).

One important note: this WiFi HP mouse requires not only Windows 7, but a "Win7 logo certified WiFi network adapter." My assumption is that any PC shipped with Windows 7 will be compliant, but some older hardware upgraded from Windows Vista or prior versions may not. If your laptop shipped with something other than Win7, this may be worth looking into.

For starters, the HP WiFi mouse is packaged in easy-to-open cardboard packaging, not the skin-tearing plastic blister pack that the Logitech came in. Good start. Included in the package are "quick start" instructions, a mini CD (which, as of this date, has the v1.0 driver, which is current on the HP website), and the mouse with two AA batteries installed.

Installation is straightforward, though the software took a few minutes to complete on my laptop. Once the drivers were installed, the software automatically searched for and found the mouse, then paired with it. Little user input was required, just clicking OK a few times. And usually, each session of Windows is this "automatic."

However, during day-to-day use, there have been a handful of instances where the mouse is unresponsive.

My only complaint about this mouse is unfortunately a very common problem with multi-button mice. HP says you can customize the side buttons but what they don't tell you is that you must select the function from a drop-down menu. And apparently HP assumes they know all functions we could want. But it is missing two of my most used keys: the control and shift keys. I like to read things in new tabs and the easiest way to accomplish this is to cntrl+click on a link. I don't like having to use 2 hands to navigate a web page and it's much easier to just hold down the side button and click at the same time. However, that is not an option with this mouse.

A few other notes:
- the wheel is smooth, does not "click" as you scroll
- the two side buttons are on opposite sides of the mouse. Seems a little difficult to use the button on the right side unless maybe you are left handed (but then the other one would be hard to use).
- the mouse buttons take slightly more pressure to click then other mice. Should be good at avoiding accidental clicks.
- the included CD is a mini-disc so if you have an HP Envy (like I do) or a computer with a slot-loaded optical drive, you have to download the software from HP's site since you can't use that size of disk in those drives.

Overall this is a great mouse and I would buy it again because I do like using wifi instead of USB. I only wish you could customize the side buttons more like some of the Logitech mice out there. I would give it 5 stars if I could customize the side buttons.

This is a great idea but it failed. I got angry and threw it in the trash in favor of a mouse with a bud.

1. Wireless.
2. Fast, smooth controls.
3. Good battery life.

1. Heavy.
2. Pairing is slow and painful.
3. When you start up you're stuck with the mouse pad. The mouse must be paired in Windows mode.
4. When the batteries die, after about 3 months, pairing takes even longer.
5. The energy saving mode often requires re-pairing the computer with the mouse.

All in all, I cannot recommend this product.

I would have to admit I was skeptical of this at first but seeing more reviews and reviews of others I finally ordered 3 with two in reserves. I got one installed after more then few tries and to be recognize by my laptop wifi but it did finally work which was better then to have a dongle sticking on the outside of the laptop with chances of it breaking or being lost. I would say it does require Windows 7 as others have mentioned but I can't say for sure of the other windows O/S but W7 seems to work will the wifi mouse. I have the latest wifi driver from the manufacture site and it's not digitally registered as some have mentioned but I did get it to work and runs ok with the manufacture unsigned digital driver. Although after spending more then a few times getting it installed I can only give them 4 stars for the amount of anguish to just get it installed to work. I would say for anyone with W7 and like to have a mouse free of any dongle this is one that would fit that model so you can free up your usb ports for more important connections.

Those wanting to buy this unit - read this surprise I found out not all WIFI cards will work with WIFI mobile mouse. So you might want to make sure before buying as I found out the hard way the laptop with Altheros WIFI works but my Intel WIFI cards will not work even with the latest drivers and Software. So be forwarned before buying the WIFI mouse. Below is what I found out in searching why my Intel WIFI cards didn't work. This is from a posting I found dated ..... >> 2009-Nov-5 <<< Some of these drivers might have been updated since that time but I do know for FACT Intel 4965 still doesn't work with the latest drivers or software....
