Light in weight, for people on the go,
By Joanna Daneman (Middletown, DE USA) - See all my reviews (TOP 10 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (COMMUNITY FORUM 04) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: HP G4-1207NR 14-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
The key to the HP G4 Pavilion series is that it uses the affordable 1.65 GHz AMD E-Series CPU, a less-expensive choice for CPU but one that is designed for laptop use. Another advantage, according to Athlon, is that the CPU will use less power, saving your battery up-time compared to something equivalent from Intel. However, at an average of six hours of battery time, I'd say that this is only average. The unit itself is lightweight, under 5 lbs. It comes with wireless LAN, a 14 inch screen, 500GB hard drive and 4GB of RAM. A built-in webcam and a cable-free method of transferring photos from your camera (digital reader) make this a great choice for travel involving web communication and uploading photos. (This is how I used to use my laptop when I went overseas, so I can appreciate these two features in particular.) There is also an HP application "Quick Web" which allows you to access the web before the laptop is fully booted. There is a DVD reader/burner, and output to HD TV. I'd rate this an excellent, lower-cost choice, especially for travel because of the reasonable weight and built-in features such as wireless, webcam and DVD player. I'd rate it less powerful for graphics-intensive applications such as games, so if you are considering a replacement for a desktop, and you require powerful graphics, this would not be my first choice. This laptop is clearly designed for people on the go-- light weight, wireless web access and webcam ability. The battery life means you need a place to recharge, especially if you use WiFi, and some features are missing such as Bluetooth and USB 3.0 (this has USB 2.0) Bottom line: a good budget choice for laptop, not a full replacement for a desktop if you are looking for graphics speed. Battery life is average.

HP quality at an affordable price,

I am very pleased with this laptop. Bought it to replace old desktop. It is fast and light-weight. Screen is bright and crisp. Keyboard action is soft and quiet. Camera works well for Skyping. Sound quality is good. Plenty of hard drive and memory. Not sure what other reviewer is referencing when he says this laptop is "noisy." Fan runs once in a while to cool it down but you will have that with any laptop. Mine is very quiet. Highly recommend!

I've had this laptop for 2 days. I did everything by the book in setting it up. I was surprised with how large the screen is. It feels solid and had a nice weight to it. When opening a number of browser windows and clicking on the control panel, doing a number of things at the same time did not make it heave a sigh nor roll its eyes, it just did what was asked of it.The touch pad is a bit sensitive when I'm typing so I'll have to get used to not resting my hand on the touch pad while typing. The touch pad while sensitive to my resting my hand on it while typing can seem temperamental when I just want to click on something. Maybe it's me and my getting used to this touch pad. Perhaps I need to adjust the setting on the touch pad software from "unobtrusive service" to "Make It Go, Number One" when I tap it twice. I'll keep you posted if I find a way for it to respond more consistently. I like the feel of the keys when I type. I now see why some people want the keys to be back lit or they use a laptop goose neck lamp. Typing by way of random light from the monitor in the dark is not easy. I do not miss the number key pad on the right. I never used it anyway. I tested all features except burning content on to the DVD. Everything is working. It does not make a lot of noise nor run hot as some have found. The webcam works, software has some nice features and the mic is so sensitive it picked up ambient noise that I was not aware of while filming a test video. The speakers are strong enough to hear clearly without distortion from across the room. The earphone jack works. The DVD tray played a NetFlix DVD without a problem. The DVD tray button might be difficult for men's fingers as it is small and required a bit of fiddling to get it to pop open. The only problem I've run into so far is when I tested streaming video from NetFlix I got video and audio unsynced little by little until it was 2 minutes out of sync (no exaggeration), but only on some items. Shows that were originally television releases I've had the audio/visual unsynced. But I watched a NetFlix streaming movie from 1979 and there was no problem. I thought maybe it's the WiFi causing the problem with streaming content. So I put the lap top on DLS via my router and I still had the problem. I tested the same content with my desk top that also has 4G of RAM, just like this laptop, and I did not have that audio/visual unsynced problem. Therefore, I decided it's not a NetFlix streaming problem, not a problem of not enough RAM, but rather something about this particular laptop that is the problem. I will update this review when I've discovered what is causing the problem. That's why I've given this review 4 out of 5 stars. I uploaded software, downloaded Kindle for PC, everything is working as it should. I still have to test how long a fully charged battery will run. I'll have to get back to you on that later. When the blank DVD discs come in I'll be burning "recovery" discs, even though there is a separate partition with the backup there. Seems silly that if/when the HDD goes wonky one is expected to access the HDD to get to the recovery data. Not logical. I'll test the DVD record function after I do the recovery discs (Which require DVD+R and nothing else. I have DVD+R/W blanks and they are not acceptable for making recovery discs... picky picky) I have not tested this laptop accessing WiFi away from home yet. As I said I've only had this for 2 days and personalizing via Windows 7, etc., has kept me distracted from taking it out to test at Starbucks. I had to apply my "skin", set up my Google Theme, change desktop screen, and customized sounds set up before we hit the public. This laptop is going to be dedicated to doing astrology readings on the go. It has to look the part since it is a prop for my shtick. So as "Ah'nold" says, "I'll be beck." when I've done the other tests and/or figured out the weird syncing problem with the instant streaming. Update: The battery lasted 5 hours and I was doing heck-a Hulu watching clips all while using WiFi. I don't know if WiFi uses more battery juice or not, but not having the RJ-47 plugged in simulated my being out and about. I did some homework on my new software that required watching a dozen videos. Then I went back to NetFlix to figure out what that audio/visual problem might be. My bad. I'm a goof. The NetFlix content that got out of sync were the ones that had "Enable HD" clicked on, in Netflix. I never paid attention to that option at the corner of the screen. No wonder the 1979 movie didn't have that problem. That old movie was not HD. As soon as I figured that out the problem disappeared. DOH, slapping myself on the forehead. So I changed my rating from 4 stars to 5. Now the only test to be done is to burn content on to the DVD. I will update this review when I get that done.
