2.0 out of 5 stars This is a 'beginners' book...
Really it is. I bought the book based on the numerous complimentary reviews, but as I have been going through it I have found virtually no new or unique tips or tricks - and I am not some stellar programmer. I think it is a good book for people who are creating their first web page and don't want it to look terrible. To be a sport I will say that my mopst used "tips...

This review is from: HTML Web Magic (Paperback)
With the introduction of new Web browser technology and other Web development tools, Website designing has taken on a more creative role in the online communication of information. HTML programming presents many challenges as well as creative opportunities. Ardith Ibanez and Natalie Zee offer in HTML Web Magic some outstanding examples of creative design techniques that can add flare and personality to new and existing Websites.      This book offers plenty of top-notch instruction that will result in getting any Website noticed. The authors emphasize the necessity of having fun and interactivity with a Website, as well as balancing between great graphics and information organization. Their advice includes being concise, being consistent, sticking to your main objective, and having fun with your ideas. Readers will definitely be challenged to become more thoughtful and creative in their approach to designing Websites. The authors will show them how!      Design concepts and instruction covered in the book includes basic HTML, Web page layout, interactivity, selection and use of fonts and graphics, text alignment, text wrapping, horizontal and vertical dividers, cool features such as floating frames, pop-up windows, image maps, pull-down menus, column layout, and roll-overs, creating forms, navigation, Web browser and platform compatibility, and the use of browser-safe colors.      Great instruction, colorful illustrations, good layout, quality printing, and concise format makes this book an ideal Website design tool to keep within reaching distance of your computer. The accompanying CD includes the HTML edition of the book for easy access to the HTML code presented in the book, animated GIF's, GIF Builder, Shockwave files, and other useful shareware programs and goodies! Highly recommended!

This book is full of practical ideas and tips to really fine tune your web pages. It is one of the most well-organized and easy to use books on the subject that I've ever owned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book and unbelievable on-line support!, March 3, 1999
By A Customer
When I bought this book it practically came with support! I had to add a review becuase of the unbelievable support. I am a technical support analyst, and I was impressed by the immediate response and courtesy that I recieved from Raymond Pirouz. I have sent e-mails of the same nature to web design sites and other authors that specifically state to contact them. Most of the time I never receive a reply. This is suppose to be a book review, but I had to mention Raymond's unique loyalty to his readers. The book is invaluable as well! It provides exactly what its title states! Step by step instructions (with excellent explanations) to spice up your web site with HTML (and JavaScript). The book's color format makes other books look like boring dictionarys.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outdated but still viable HTML tutorial, July 21, 2000
The tips and tricks are basically for version 3 and 4 browsers (well look at the publication date...) so if you are looking for the very latest DHTML techniques, look elsewhere. However if you want to learn the standard backwards-compatible layout techniques that most sites still use, such as table layouts, frames, IMG tag tricks, you can't do much better than this excellent book. The only glaring thing missing is an index - but that seems to be an unfortunate "feature" of all the Magic books. If you are a web designer just starting out, and you want to advance beyond basic HTML without having to invest in a WYSIWYG editor, this book is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, for any level, January 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: HTML Web Magic (Paperback)
This book is pure amazing. It has code with good explanations for a begginer. It has some features (like substitute to Server-Side-Include in Javascript) that are great for an expert. It has a lot of code and information in between for medium-user level. It does however talks about Javascript and some intermediate HTML codes, so if you have no knowlege of HTML, you should not buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN ESSENTIAL BOOK FOR WEB DESIGNERS, January 20, 1999
By A Customer
An excellent book for web designers. Although I know how to code in Html and have my own website, I still refer to Raymonds's book when I get stuck or when I see something new on the net that I don't know, sure enough it's there in the book . The book has very good color page examples so that you can see the result before using the code.I have also incoporated some of his tips in my web page design A must have book written by a very experienced web designer in my opinion who knows a web designer' s requirements and I will definitely purchase any new books from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Reference for Web Developers, December 28, 1998
HTML Web Magic 2nd is an exceptional book that belongs on everyWeb developer's bookshelf. I find that the glossary of tags and CSSelements in the beginning is helpful if I just can't seem to remember what a certain tag is. The lessons on creating special effects are very easy to follow, and allow you to create lots of really sharp special effects. I am currently redesigning my website to use some of the brand spankin' new techniques found in HTML Web Magic 2nd Edition, and I am very pleased with the outcome. Also, being in full color helps you visualize the effect better than some other black and white books. All in all, HTML Web Magic 2nd Edition is a great book, and should be at your side every time you sit down to create a masterpiece for the Web.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent intro to HTML usage, June 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: HTML Web Magic (Paperback)
While this book is a good starting point for any version of HTML, it should be used as a starting point only. Users should also realise that it dabbles with JavaScript, which properly is not part of HTML. (This is no crime; but readers should know this in advance.)

The authors advise some things that do not need to be done - for example, creating a separate page to hold the images when writing the JavaScript image rollover code. However, they do advise people on some of the best ways to increase their knowledge of HTML while providing some solid starting points and some sound design tips. They include information about the differences between browsers and platforms, and how stylistic elements differ - enough information to give readers examples of items to pay attention to, while not overwhelming novices in information.

The presentation could have been a little clearer, but as a kickoff book, it works well. This is a good resource for people who want to move from having PageMill or FrontPage spit out code, to writing their own, cleaner HTML.
