Book Description

HTML5 is revolutionizing the Web, and now it's coming to your ebook reader! With the release of the EPUB 3 specification, HTML5 support is officially a part of the EPUB standard, and publishers are able to take full advantage of HTML5's rich feature set to add rich media and interactivity to their ebook content.

HTML5 for Publishers gives an overview of some of the most exciting features HTML5 provides to ebook content creators--audio/video, geolocation, and the Canvas--and shows how to put them in action. Learn how to:

  • Intersperse audio/video with textual content

  • Create a graphing calculator to display algebraic equations on the Canvas

  • Use geolocation to customize a work of fiction with details from the reader's locale

  • Employ MathML to create an interactive equation solver

  • Make a coloring book using SVG and JavaScript

4.0 out of 5 stars Good intro: Good examples, clear explanation December 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
HTML5 for Publishers is a tutorial aimed at publishers who want to expand their ebooks beyond traditional text-and-graphics. This ebook addresses how to add Canvas, Geolocation, and Audio/Video.

It starts with a brief tutorial on HTML and JavaScript and then move to specific examples that put HTML5 in action.

(1) The specific demos include a graphic calculator that uses Canvas.
(2) Finger painting application for drawing pictures on a page
(3) Demp of how an ebook can be customized with the reader's current location
(4) An audio-enabled glossary that lets you hear each term
(5) Embedded video along with instructional text to supplement the video

You get the actual code for the example from a web download specified in the book along with the explanations. The explanations are clear, the examples are complete, the author allows portions of the code to be re-used without asking for permission.

I liked the author also states the compatibility with major EPUB reader platforms for each feature.

This is an excellent tutorial, it exceed my expectations in both clarity and completeness.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good start but not for serious coders December 26, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book provides enough information for smart people to get up and running. However it was extremely simple and doesn't even scratch the surface of publishing with html5. The information is not enough to do any serious production ready work. The learning curve that you will have trying to look up resources online will not be any flatter because of this book.

There are good code examples however these are extremely basic and all the resources point to other content that will presumably teach you for real (for a price). Presumably this book is free simply to point you towards paid resources by the same publisher.

Excellent, as are all the O'Reilly books I've come across. I have been after an HTML5 book that specifically addresses publishing, so I am delighted to have found this one.

I got this free, so great for the price. I would not have bought it outright. A free reference in e format is always welcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good information & examples but not very broad or in-depth
I'm the developer of an HTML & CSS checking tool for Windows so I've had more than my 'fair share' learning HTML and CSS, but I was not as familiar with eBook publishing, MathML,... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars A chi é rivolto?
Pessimo libro, quasi inutile. Non ci sono contenuti originali, anzi anche qualche errore. Ogni minuto per leggere questo libro é speso male.
