You could not argue with Raymond's acting and writing talent. He was a natural at both making you believe he was sincere in either effort. I read the first volume of his biography dealing with his life up until after WWI and just about ready to tackle show business. I came to appreciate his ability to weave a rich tapestry of excellent recall as well as an understanding of what was the meaning of his life.

But, he somewhat disappointed in the sequel. For one, it was a much longer narrative, over 410 pages. He felt compelled to tell us in too much detail of his remarkable stage career in both England and the USA while neglecting so much of his American celluloid career. That was great maybe for British readers who were weaned more on theater than Americans. For example, he totally ignored his participation in Arsenic and Old Lace as well as possible behind-the-scene stories that must have occurred in Desperate Journey with co-stars Errol Flynn and Ronald Reagan. To be fair, he did mention them albeit briefly in the trio's participation in The Santa Fe Trail. Probably, because as he rightfully acknowledged- he stole the movie playing John Brown, a character he acted periodically later in his career.

Ray also kept reminding us of his reticence to connect with the audience. It was almost as if he performed for two reasons only- to achieve the perfect presentation and to gain acceptance from his co-performers. He played down the quality of his participation in the Dr. Kildare television series in the early 1960s, suggesting that he mailed in a somewhat stoic persona the final three of the five years it was on the air.

If you're a fan of Raymond Massey, then this is a must-have book. This is the second book in his 2 book biography. The first is titled "When I Was Young" and is also an excellent book. I highly recommend both books!
