I purchased this and the Etón American Red Cross ARCFR160R Microlink at the same time so I could compare them. The HY-88E is $10 cheaper than the Eton radio.

What I found...

The Good:
- Rado works just fine. Tuning is a little difficult but usable. The sound is loud and clear. The receiver is sensitive.
- The LED flashlight works fine.
- The crank and solar panel chargers both appear to do a good job powering the device.
- Battery life was better than I expected. I ran the radio for over two hours on a single charge.
- I like the ability to use a USB charger to charge the battery.

The Bad:
- Weather radio has only one frequency, so if the NOAA station for your area doesn't match, you're out of luck (the Eton let's you select from seven NOAA channels).
- The crank-dynamo charger is noisy and difficult to crank. It works, and it feels pretty solid, but five minutes of cranking is pretty challenging.

The Ugly:
- The USB charging feature simply did not work for charging any of my Apple devices (the Eton radio DID work). Maybe my unit is a dud.

All-in-all, you get what you pay for. I'd say this was worth the $20 I spent.

I shopped Amazon for these small radio/light combination units with hand crank charging, in the $10 - $20 range. I'm taking a couple of these on a trip to Africa as gifts, where batteries may not be available or affordable. Once the HY-88E arrived, I was immediately impressed. The body is a dense, rubberized plastic, very sturdy feeling and advertised as water resistant. Everything seems well designed and well made. The hand crank operates smoothly and folds down securely, and seems quite sturdy. Some of the other units I looked at like the Kaito KA404 were reported as poorly made, but not so the HY-88E. I love that this has not only a crank, but also can be charged by the onboard solar cell on the top of the unit, OR even by plugging into a computer USB port. Be aware that this unit does not take replaceable batteries. The radio has standard tuning and volume dials, AM, FM and Weather band, and works very well. Other units had only a station seek button. This radio also has a built in telescoping antenna, and the speaker and volume are quite good for something that fits in the palm of your hand. Another nice and unique feature is the output jack that allow you to charge or power a cell phone or similar item. All in all, this was money well spent. I highly recommend this unit as part of any emergency kit. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is because I haven't had the opportunity to see how it holds up in use.

Oct, 2012 - I and my radio got drenched in a thunderstorm. I survived, the radio did not - in spite of taking it apart and doing everything to dry out the components. Undaunted, I bought another one and now carry it on hikes in a Ziplock bag. Still a great radio.

The unit is very compact, and light with a rubberized housing that should protect it from normal storage or transportation damage. I question Amazon listing it as "waterproof"but my guess it was taken from page one of the instruction sheet. My bet is on "water resistant" as is clearly stated on the second page of the instruction sheet.
Tuner and volume controls are a small and difficult to use but very functional. It has good sound quality for stations that you adjust with LED tuner indicator. The receiver is set for only one NOAA station and this is a definite negative for an emergency radio's functionality. The radio NOAA reception was marginal at the best for a tower located less than 15 miles away with no obstructions. The NOAA station received was: Ocean 034029 Atlantic City 162.400 KHB38 1000 CENTRAL/S

The LED flashlight works fine and is a definite asset in emergency situations. The crank-dynamo charger was a little noisy but worked well and felt pretty solid. Having the option to charge the battery with the crank-dynamo, a solar charger and a USB Port covered both emergencies and real life charging.
This radio was listed as an improvement from other ones as you can use the radio to recharge Cell Phones, iPhones, iPads, IPods, MP3s/MP4s etc. The charger did not work for my iPhone or any of the devices I tried to charge with it. My first step was to fully charged the battery with the USP cord before I even hooked up the phone. Although the phone was off it was discharged by the radio. I repeated the test again with the battery fully charged in direct full sun with the Cell off with the same results. The second time I actually used a meter to verify the drain from the cell phone battery.
The bottom line is it is worth the price if you are buying a crank-dynamo or solar charged radio with a light. It is definitely not a full function emergency unit.

Everything works good. I only have one small complaint. I may be missing something, but I don't see a compartment to store the wires n' plugs n' stuff in. They could have easily made this a little bit bigger and put that feature in. It did charge my cell phone a bit (non-iPhone). Doesn't give you a full charge or anything, but I could make a few calls if I needed to with the charge it gave.
