Product Description

Shimano's XT BL-M785 Hydraulic Disc Brake takes its design cues from the new XTR M988 Trail Brakes, and though these might not be as visually refined as the highly polished XTR units, the stopping power speaks for itself. In addition to the excellent power and modulation, the XT Brakes provide easy adjustment to keep your fingers happy and intuitively in control. There's also a tool-free reach adjustment that you're able to dial on-the-fly, along with a free stroke adjustment that lets you determine lever-blade-to-travel before pads make contact with the rotor. Also, Shimano reworked pivot location so that the arc of the lever mimics the natural movement of fingers for enhanced power. Servo Wave technology correspondingly comes into play here in order to adjust piston travel relative to lever travel. As you squeeze on the brakes, the gap to the rotor quickly closes, then slows to permit predictable modulation. This allows the pads to sit further from the rotors at rest for less chance of drag. The calipers house a 22mm ceramic piston for inspiring stopping power, and Shimano uses a banjo fitting for the hose attachment at the caliper. The calipers also employ Shimano's Radiator Pads that have integrated fins in order to dissipate heat and to reduce fade on long, hot descents. The Shimano XT BL-M785 Hydraulic Disc Brake has hinged, split clamps for easy mounting. It comes as a pre-bled lever/caliper/hose assembly and its complete for each end of the bike -- except for rotors (sold separately). Shimano XT Brakes will work equally well with XT Ice Tech Rotors or standard XT rotors. Please note that this brake is sold separately as either Left/Front or Right/Rear.

I changed the rotors with IceTech from Shimano also and there was no more squealing, and no more vibrations.

How they hold up over a muddy winter remains to be seen, but so far, I think they are awesome!

These are the best brakes I have ever felt. I highly recommend them. I switched from avid elixer 1 after the rear seized for no reason one day. The responsiveness of these brakes are unreal. Be careful getting use to them however. You might double eject over the handlebars. Amazing! I will only use these from now on.

I'm using this with an avid rotor until the ice tech one arrives, but it's already much more powerful than the juicy 3s I was using. The lever length is great, the brakes come on strong, but after a while on the trail you get used to it and can easily control your speed to varying degrees.

Considering the price, these are excellent! They are 10 classes over the Elixir 5 that came with my bike. I changed the rotors with IceTech from Shimano also and there was no more squealing, and no more vibrations. I find it easy to control the levers with only one finger. The modulation and power of these brakes gives me a lot more courage than before ..., maybe a little too much!

The only reason that I gave this product 4 stars is due to value; I have noticed little to no difference in the performance of these brakes vs. the SLX line. So if you are not worried about a couple grams of weight and having a cotter pin instead of a screw for the brake pad retaining pin I would just go with those. That being said the brakes work very well. You can adjust the levers for position and also for free stroke. Also I have seen other reviews talking about having to take off handlebar grips to mount the levers, this is NOT necessary with these (release to open clamp for bars is a small recessed button that can be pushed with a large paper clip or other similar sized piece of metal). I HIGHLY recommend Shimano brakes over other brands due to the ease of bleeding them and replacing pads, everything is well-made and easy, just make sure that whenever you do anything with the brake fluid you remove the pads b/c just a little oil on them can ruin them. Upgrade your brakes today and save the squirrels!

Awesome brakes for the money. These brakes having amazing stopping power and are silent. I know every time that I hit the brakes these stop right away. I have used these in wet and dry environments. They were also super easy to install. Lines came pre-bled and the correct length. I was able to install these in about 10 minutes. I was amazed at the stopping power of these. I previously had the Avid Elixir 3 brakes, and these are much better and MUCH quieter. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I should have purchased these sooner. They are light years better than the Tektro Novella brakes that came with my bike. Stopping power is great. Stopping with one finger is no problem. Unless you have a large bike frame, plan on cutting the lines to fit. I had to cut both and did so without the need to bleed them afterwards. There are plenty of videos on YouTube to show you how to do this. Highly recommend these brakes.
