This review is from: Haba Arranging Game Mosaic (Toy)
I have to be honest, I bought this toy because the colors are so gorgeous and I am interested in patterns. I think understanding patterns (like quilting patterns) has helped me understand something intangible about math and "structures". So i wanted my son to learn these things too. The blocks are gorgeous. Craftsmanship is fantastic. My son, age 4, is not so interested in the mosaic other than to take the blocks out of it and make other things, like free standing "mushrooms" and other small things. Still, I think it is a good toy. I am sure the occasion will present itself where he will sit and try different patterns with this square, and that is some deep, quiet play that is so valuable. Now I know there are other mosaics like this from Haba ... and I have wondered if getting another mosaic and interchanging the pieces would give us even more to work with... if they interchange. I have not looked closely at the other patterns to see if this would work, mainly because of the price. So at this point it just waits for the right day, and it also waits for my daughter, who is now age one.

I have to say that, although I do love the this pattern puzzle, there is something that is not as pretty but might be better for introducing 3D spatial learning and pattern recognition, and that is called "MindWare Pattern Play" (also sold on amazon and on fatbraintoys). It's a wooden puzzle game gives you a stack of cards with patterns pictured to copy into the mosaic table. It doesn't look like a 3D puzzle, but it is. The side the blocks lay on matters. The cards range from easy to very hard. You will probably be called to help a lot, as its not so much a toy as it is a puzzle. Not as whimsical as this Haba Mosaic, but very very educational.
